i am using nfs on my network with server ip 192.168.1.10 (the exporting server)
and i am mount nfs partition in /etc/fstab and when i login into console using the
alt ctrl FX
i continously get the following error
lockd: cannot monitor 192.168.1.10
moreover the mount is somewhat irregular on host systems as i am mounting home directories on all the systems on network and authentication using NIS, when i try to open firefox in console it continusly gives this error and firefox doesn't open and then after a reboot again of the client workstation firefox opens
I have been using 10.4 as a Linux NFS server to share it's storage with a number of Mac computers we use in the office. All the Macs are configured to connect to the Linux server using the mount_nfs command in terminal.I have been using this method to transfer files to and from the Linux server for a while. Today, I installed a number of standard Ubuntu updates / security patches per the standard GUI update tool.
Now, I'm getting "nfs server 192.x.x.x:/media/video: lockd not responding" error messages. I have not seen this error before, and I haven't changed anything else about the configuration of the Linux server or the Macs with the exception of the installation of the security patches.
I boot some Slackware with PXE. All work fine except i can't fix the client lockd ports.NFS is compiled inside the kernel, so all modprobe.d options are useless.But rpcinfo -p on the client side shows me totally different ports.On the NFS server, the ports are ok, as i appended lines in /etc/lilo.conf Server and client kernels/modules are identical.

I compiled my kernel, compiled scsi support into kernel, used the new kernel and initrd, the boot failed.Then ,i unzip my initrd, found that sd_mod.ko can't be insert, i added it manual, and reboot OK.so, why! in the kernel configure , the sd_mod.ko is set to <M> , but why it can't be found in initrd?

However I cannot use the dual monitor any more - just see the cloned two monitors... I suspect something happened during update. ATI catalyst control center says I need to run it as superuser, but I do not know how to.
View 4 Replies View Relatedsince upgrading the squeeze kernel from 2.6.26-2-686 to 2.6.32-5-686 Ive been unable to boot my HP D510S/845G without attached monitor. As this computer serves as router and print/faxserver, there is/was neither a monitor nor a keyboard/mouse attached. With monitor everything works fine, without monitor the computer hangs somewhere. Unfortunately it hangs without logging anything in /var/log.
Reinstalling xorg and xserver-xorg didnt change anything, neither was the new xorg.conf from dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg of any use. (After booting with attached monitor I disconnected the monitor and ran dpkg-reconfigure) Maybe disabling Xorg would solve the problem, but I want to be able to log in via vnc and use a GUI - for example to configure mythtv. Up to the kernel-update everything was working fine, so I think some changes to the new kernel are responsible. how to fix it or how to start logging earlier in the boot process?
Ok here's the problem : I tried to patch the kernel of my Debian server with GrSecurity but when I rebooted I couldn't SSH the server anymore, but my host has a rescue system that lets me SSH the server so I can fix things.
So maybe the kernel patching failed, maybe it's a only a problem with Grub.
I don't really know what to do to fix this. If I messed up the kernel what can I do ? Can I just fix the problem by modifying the grub entries to only boot on the old kernel (I don't even know if it's here anymore, I'm quite the n00b) ?
Well for now I'll just try to mount the partitions (won't let me do "mount: can't find /dev/sda1 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab" )
edit : to be clearer my main question is : how can I determine if it's because the kernel is messed up or because the system wouldn't boot properly ?
edit 2 : is there a way to create a log of what happens at boot so I can have an idea about what's wrong ?
I have a freshly installed Ubuntu 11.04 on a laptop computer with an ATI card. I have installed the latest ATI proprietary drivers 11-6 manually, by downloading them from the ATI website, creating .deb packages and installing them. Everytime I connect an external monitor, the system seems to go into kernel panic. The laptop monitor becomes black; I can see the mouse cursor, but it does not move. The external monitor also remains black.
The system does not respond to any command, neither Alt-Ctrl-F1 nor the Elephants key. I have looked at /var/log/syslog and /var/log/Xorg.log*, but none of these end with an error.
I'vd a problem with loading modules. Booting gives the this error:

Always the same error when booting. After a period of time, (Graphical User Interface) the mouse click no longer operates, also text input isn't possible.
I had no access to the system at all, even crt alt F1 stopped working, also text input was no't possible. so reinstall was the only option. Maybe there is a connection with this two errors.
I've reinstalled Debian 8 several times. Still, both errors stay.
The same happend again (in the GUI) is nothing possible, no txt input, no mouse click), but now I have access to the system, ctr/alt F1 is working.
I placed Ubuntu on the same drive as my windows XP is, and there were no problems, everything was fine, all drivers were working...I need to use kernel 2.6.29 and i read about "how to install a new kernel" on this forum. I downloaded 3 files, I installed them in a good sequence. After reboot I can choose between 3 kernels, and if I choose this, then there is a mounting problem:
mounting none on /dev failed
Afterthat there is written something else, what I cant read. Some seconds later ubuntu boots, but my (non-USB) mouse isnt working.
I just upgraded Ubuntu from Maverick to Natty. On the GRUB, I now can see there are 2 kernels installed, 2.6.38-8-generic-pae and 2.6.38-8-generic.The second one works perfectly. But the pae version just shows me the Ubuntu opening screen (with the Ubuntu logo standing over 5 red dots), and then suddenly switches to text mode and displays a prompt. Anybody knows what's the problem?My computer is a DELL Inspiron 1720. So you don't have to look, inspiron 1720 features Nvidia 8600M GT as graphic chipset, CPU is Intel core 2 duo T7100 @ 1.80GHz, and it has 2Go RAM.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe -162 kernel upgrade just released failed to boot in my x86-64 system. Additionally, both previous kernels failed in (probably) the same way. The progress icon proceeded all the way to its 'f' image, and then hung. I touched escape key, and found several disturbing messages among a dozen or so lines --
mdadm: No arrays found in config file or automatically. A dynamic linking error occurred: /lib64/multipath/libcheckdirectio.so: no such file or directory awk: cmd. line:1: fatal: cannot open file `/etc/inittab` for reading (Invalid Argument). Init: rcS post-stop process (807) terminated with status 2s. I got into rescue mode with my install disk, then looked for libcheckdirectio.so in /mnt/sysimage/lib64 but it was not there. Also, locate -d /mnt/sysimage/mlocate/mlocate.db/libcheckdirectio.so found nothing.
Ran chroot and executed the fakd diagnostic (which I had not seen before) and rebooted. Same problem - although now the screen is telling me SELinux is requiring a targeted policy relabel. My dual-boot-to-vista system has been erratic (requiring fsck several times, and confounding the Vista partition to require file checks), primarily since a large install of Eclipse and multiple plug-ins AFAICR.

Recently updated to kernel 2.5.32.11-99 and upon restart, failed to boot. Get stuck at a recovery prompt asking for root password or Ctrl-D to continue (which reboots system). I worked around this problem by reverting to the previous kernel 2.6.32.9-70. From what I can tell, with the newer kernel there is a problem with device enumeration of software raid volumes.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed OpenSuSE 11.2 64bit from a Linux Magazine #111 dvd and now cannot create DomU guests. The exact error is in the subject line. It is sitting on a software RAID-1 partionion on two (mirrored) hard disks. When I first install - formatting all partitions - it reports error 17 and won't load the OS. After running the Repair installed system from the DVD I get the impression it is doing things twice rather than doing the repairs once on the RAIDed partition. Should I go back to 11.1?
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy nvidia graphics driver was updated last night, and since then I've been unable to get into Gnome without resorting to low graphics mode. I have extensive knowledge of Windoze systems. Upon boot up, I get the following error:

(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration
I've tried some troubleshooting, including attempting to uninstall all nvidia drivers and reinstall (via synaptic).
Administration->Hardware Drivers reports that version 173 is installed loaded and active. Nvidia X Server Settings (nvidia-settings) gives me the "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server." error.
I've tried the nvidia-xconfig (both with gdm up and down) and it hasn't made any difference.
Oh, it's a GeForce 6200 wwith two Dell E193FPp monitors running on Ubuntu 10.04.

My laptop broke beyond repair recently so I am stuck on a 6 year old hp pavilion zv5000 given to me by a friend and I thought I may as well give linux a go, I have been meaning to for years. I've installed xubuntu 10.04 as I heard it is less resource intensive than normal ubuntu but have been unable to configure the nvidia graphics card. I used the hardware drivers program which installed the nvidia accelerated graphics driver 96 (which was the recommended version) and then ran sudo nvidia-xconfig as instructed and got

Which I presume means it worked correctly, but whenever I try to boot I get a message saying "failed to load nvidia kernel module", at which point I either have to restore the generic configuration or just start the session in low graphics mode. I have googled the problem and in a lot of peoples cases it seems to be linked to upgrading from a previous version whilst mine was a fresh install. I tried sudo modprode and it says the nvidia module isn't present. I tried installing the packages in synaptic which mentioned nvidia kernel modules but still no luck.
I have a Dell Vostro v13 laptop that was shipped with 9.04. I upgraded to 9.10 and it told me it could not upgrade the kernel. The error message said something about a problem with the kernel file. I can still run the system and have not rebooted since the upgrade, but I need to be able to reboot eventually.
The System Monitor says:

Everything I have read says that 9.10 includes kernel 2.6.31. So I am afraid to reboot now.

If it matters, I have 2 monitors, an NEC AccuSync 120 CRT and a Samsung BX2440X LCD. I use them in Xinerama mode with the Nvidia drivers under my Ubuntu 9.10 install and have no problems there. To get normal graphics under 10.04, I have to start up in low-graphics mode, kill X server, reinstall the Nvidia proprietary drivers, and restart the X server. Then I have to do it all over again after the next restart, every time I want to run 10.04.It's very annoying.Also possibly relevant: I use the latest 32-bit Nvidia drivers for 10.04, version 256.53.I've found a few other threads where people had problems similar to this, but nothing exactly like my situation nor any real resolution so far. I hope it can be fixed, because there are other things about 10.04 that I really like.
I am trying to fix my friends laptop and after the most recent upgrade she performed she got this error message when her laptop boots. Thing is that it stays frozen in that mode. I don't even see the grub boot loader. I know its the only operating system she has running on her laptop as well. The following error was encountered. I'm using 10.04 LTS and updated to the last kernel. After reboot the system is hanged to the grub>
I tried to reinstall grub with the 10.04 live CD but the same thing append after reboot!
The only thing I can think of is that the machine is a RAID 1 system! What can I do to restart it normally?
So I just recently got my proprietary driver working yesterday (and enjoyed too many hours of Starcraft 2 afterwards) but today after I downloaded an Update Package and rebooted, it's telling me that it "Filed to load NVIDIA kernel module".So now I'm back to square one, I had to restart in the lower graphics mode or whatever it's called prior to logging in.When I go to System - Admin - Hardware Drivers, nothing shows up and it says no proprietary drivers are in use on this system.
When I try to change the resolution under System - Preferences - Monitors (since everything is so big) I get "It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead?" I select "Yes" and I get "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. I have installed the newer kernel 2.6.35.4 and everything seems fine. To compile it, I followed this tut, [URL]. The problem I have is everytime I try to install anything, I get an error "bcmwl-kernel-source failed to install or upgrade". The installation completes for the default 2.6.32.24 generic kernel but fails for this newer kernel.
Any software I try to install now fails for the .35 with the same error. I have attached 3 screenshots showing the error message in more details hopefully. I had installed the .34 kernel and had the exact problem (screenshot.jpg). Error message is shown very clearly in third attachment, sorry I couldn't manage to copy the error and paste it.
I download "VirtualBox-3.1.2-56127-Linux_amd64.run" and installed it, and got a messages like this " virtualbox have been installed successfully in my system", but when I run virtualbox, I've been told "/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup" something like that. And I run virtualbox in terminal, got this:

I tried to compile a 2.6.33 kernel following Alien's guide.
I pretty much used the default values for every (NEW) option avaiable. I used "make localmodconfig" on my current config (zcat /proc/config.gz) and then tried to use "make menuconfig" to check if I could change anything. I didn't understand most of the options, so I skipped it. Then I used "make bzImage modules" and "make modules_install", copied the files mentioned on the wiki and run lilo.
But when I try to boot using my custom kernel, it gives an error like "Cannot remount read-only filesystem as read-write! This can cause serious problems."
If I try to continue the boot, it hangs when trying to launch the syslog script...
The new kernel entry on lilo.conf is:

By the way, one thing I changed is the kernel compression format, which I set LZMA. But it didn't seem to be the problem, since it at least started...

I provided backup and decided use two mirrored SATA disks Seagate ST3500320NS HDD ES.2 500GB with PCI SATA controler Kouwell KW-5125 (SiI3124 chipset) inserted through PCI riser card (2U case). (I can't replace old SCSI disk because it isn't available any more.) I disabled SCSI controler in BIOS and removed Adaptec SCSI RAID 2000S PCI card. I inserted PCI SATA controler connected both SATA disks and configured mirroring.
