Programming :: Sed - Get All Text After First Colon?

This will probably be a simple question for the experts here, but I've been googling and testing and trying for a few hours with no luck. I'm tired and stumped. My simple test case:

$ cat test.txt
First colon: Get everything after: first colon.I want to return all the text after the first colon. So that would be "Get everything after: first colon." This is what I currently have:

first colon.This returns everything after the second colon.

i am on processing text tasks And i found that if you assign a text to a variable is chomp'ed automatically the newline

The problem is i can only access the items/lines using:

how do i convert this to an indexed array. More importantly, how do i get access to individual $line[0], ..., $line[n] Another thing, if the file.txt, has lines with spaces it is a mess using the for...in..., but echoing prints line by line...o_0

I have to delete a certain line of text from the a textfile via ubuntu's shell scripting.I have done research, and it seems that most people advocate the usage of sed /d option. sed makes does not edit the text file. Hence, most options I discovered involved the use of a temporary variable/textfile and then overwriting the old file with the temporary new file. Is there anyway whereby I can bypass the use of temporary storage containers? I hope there is any magical combination of commands to edit the file directly.

I want to display the contents of a particular log file (simple text file, I mean in Linux). But there is a problem: The contents need to be organized in a fixed format. Have a look at this log file:

I have many files in a folder from which I need to extract some contents, these are basically text files wich have individual lines with (i.e)
name: john
address: whatever
phone: 123456
Some caveats
1. Sometimes a line might be missing.
name: johnn
phone: 123456
2. Lines are not in the same line-numbers across the files I did try some things with awk based on google searches but I couldn't extract the data of each file into a single line (this is the ultimate goal):
john,whatever,123456
I don't have knowledge other than having put some bash scripts together for backup jobs, so I am open to install anything that could to pull this off.

I have a text file that contains the following string of numbers and letters:

or

In the first example, I would like to grab only 3.45 and write it into a new file. Then I would like to grab only 1.23 and write it into another file.
I have 80,000 files to do and those numbers can be different every time.

i'm trying to script a lil piece to execute in terminal so when i type something like:
scriptname textfile
the script searches the text file, replaces charecters of my choosing with charecters of my choosing
"sed" im told is the way to go, and i got summat like this going

(if need be, i think i can just add another line of "-e /s/char/newchar/" if i need to target more charecters or words as needed.) the issue with the above code. . . how do i get it to target whatever text file follows the command? without having to manually designate sed to it each time? e.g. in commanding:
scriptname textfile
how do i get the script to target textfile^^^?

I have this PHP Program I have been hobbying for years. Started in old PHP3 early PHP4. So with the newer PHP, things are starting to break! I have this string:
session_is_registered('UserID')
And I need to convert to this:
isset($_SESSION['UserID'])
in more than 200 scripts in my directory. I have been toying with perl (in a copy of the dir of course in case I really screw things over, lol) but am not gettig too far. The new code needs to swap ( ) for [ ] and i'm just all hung up! I am getting lost in Perl, I have this, but it does not substitute so I am missing something:
perl -i.bak -pe "s/session_is_registered('UserID')/isset(\$_SESSION['UserID'])/g" *.php

I need to extract som text from a text file. The text is a test log with system info at the top and results further down. What I need is to add different tags with formatting before and after each line. I have prepared a template with html formatting, but the number of lines in the test log may be different from case to case, so I need to be able to add formatting tags by need. I want to encrypt a text using rsa encryption method. I did it using command openssl but i want it using my library api, the library api is as, int rsa_calc (unsigned char * msg, unsigned char * mod, int count, int exp, unsigned char result); I can't understand how i input public key (.pem file) and what will be the modulus (unsigned char * mod) and exponent (int exp) for any text.Is there any kind of formula to calculate modulus and exponent of the text.
