Programming :: Run Software Compiled As Root On User?
Jul 27, 2009
I've compiled some code which I've given to other people, however when they try to run it they get segemtation fault. After some testing I've found if it's ran from root (where I compiled it) everything works, if I try to run from a user there's a fault.

Is there any way a non-root user can programmatically determine which days the computer ran during, say, the last month?
The information is in /var/log/messages.* but those files are root:root 640.
Non of the world-readable /var/log files on the Slackware 13.0 development system can be used:boot Not present if boot logging not enabled (default). dmesg No timestamps. lastlog Not enough info. wtmp Rewritten on each boot so not enough info. EDIT: not correct: by default wtmp is rotated weekly and kept for one month as configured in /etc/logrotate.conf xdm.log Not present if xdm not used. Xorg.0.log Not present if X not run.

I am writing a ping kind of program for my own application. This application needs to run with non root user privileges. This needs me to create a raw socket. But the ping connection is failing because of creating raw socket with non root user. How can I run the application successfully with non root user privileges using raw socket creation?

I am working on a large program in C to run on Puppy Linux. I have multiple pthreads running. I want to be able to set the pthread SCHED_POLICY and priority in my program but I want a user to be able to run the program without root privilege.
Using a sticky bit and root ownership gives the user too much power because they will be able to write and compile their own scripts. Is there a way to use 'sudo' when I set the thread parameters from my program or something like this?

One of the feature in my application involve changing of hardware setting. This require the user to be root or have administrative right. Before my application enable that feature, I want it to check whether the user is "root" or not, or whether user use "sudo" command to run the application or not, or whether the user has administrative rights or not. What are the codes or library that can do this?
NOTE: Sometimes, advanced linux user may set the user id of root to something else other than 0. So, getuid() may not be helpful in this case.

I am debugging a project and I noticed the .so files from my installed version of this project are being used when I run the main executable. However what I want is that the modified and compiled libraries (.so files) are being used. This is for testing the software. So I don't want to install these. I tried adding the directory with the .so files in /etc/ld.so.conf and doing ldconfig. However that did not seem to work. How can I let the main executable use the modified .so? I also want to debug this using gdb, so if someone knows what I should do to get those modified .so files being used for execution.

Player-Stage uses .cc files. I know how to compile them. But how do I actually execute my code? There is an output file generated. There is nothing in the .cfg file or in the .world file that specifies what program to use to run the robot. Or is it not specified in the world or cfg files?
Then how to make the robot obey my compiled .cc file? If this question is silly or if I am asking stupid questions

I no longer have access to my root desktop. On a session I attempted to change the root username but i apparently assigned it a wrong directory that does not exist. When I rebooted with my new root username, i was instead recognised as a simple user (no root privileges). I tried the console to change to "old" root but root password is not accepted and there is no way to access to sudoer files. it seems that inserting a new username requires root privileges and i am back to square one. Simply logging with old root username and password after restart gives me a blank screen with nothing on it and cannot even reboot.

Prelude: OpenSUSE 11.2 (2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop), installed Novell client 2.0 SP2 (novell-client-2.0-sp2-sle11-i586.iso).
I found that if any usual user is logged into a NDS-tree, then _local_ root has full access to user's network shares, including the user's home directory located on remote Netware-server. Is it by design or
have I missed something? Nevertheless in windows local admin has no access to network resources mounted of any other user. If you runas shell (as admin) then admin in principle can't "see" network shares which were mounted (connected) by other users - they are accessible ("visible") per session.

I have a program that is completed under Linux, it requires library tidy, PCRE and libcurl, which could be found in Cygwin too.
I could compile my linux program through Cygwin and produce an EXE file, however it do require 'cygwin.dll' installed by the users.
I am wondering if I could have someway to produce out a stand-alone EXE file that could run independently from Cygwin ? ( I don't mind to combine that cygwin.dll and the EXE together for a larger EXE file).

After an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10, my only non-root user on the system can't log in to X. Root can log in just fine. When I type my password into GDM, it attempts to start X but goes right back to GDM without starting X successfully or giving me any error messages. I'm using nvidia graphics drivers and dual monitors, and those work just fine in root's X session. How can I fix it so my non-root user can log in again?

Well I did something pretty stupid and now I can't log in with my user other than the root user. Basically, I wanted to change my username and so I when to the admin > user & accounts - and selected the account I wanted to change. Anyway I did that and then logged out. Since then all I get when I reseted is a spinning mouse ball and a black screen. I can get into the shell prompt - but I'm not sure how I'd go about fixing this issue I created. At the moment I'm logged in the shell with root, and if I type 'id' I can see my old username, but I think the links behind it are broken.
