View 3 RepliesI'm having an odd problem (although I'm probably missing something obvious to a non-semi-newbie):I have a directory used for samba shares which is owned by user fred, a system user which the windows clients on my network authenticate with to access the shares. I, roger, want to access the directories without having to put my 'sudo boots' on every time, so I made the directory group users and added roger to that group, and changed the file/folder modes from 0755 to 0775.However I still do not have write permissions inside the directory; I still seem to be considered 'other' and hence only have read and execute.

Their zombie processes then cause record locks.I've come up with calls for killing the pids for any prior sessions started by a given user. This procedure would be executed in the .bash_profile.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a group (GROUP) with a number of users. I recently added a new user (NEW). NEW is able to read but not write group files, whereas all the other users in the group can read and write to the group files. The permissions for the group files indicate that all members of group should have write permission -rwxrwxr-x
/etc/group indicates that NEW is a member of GROUP
...
GROUP:x:501:GROUP,OLD,OLD2,OLD3,OLD4,....,NEW
[code]....
Don't know if it matters, but both OLD and NEW write to the GROUP files over an internet connection. why NEW can't write to GROUP files? Is there a maximum number of members in a group that I might have exceeded?
I need to create a group that has the same permissions as the users group. Can I have the new group be a member of the "users" group to inherit its permissions?

I am running Samba and want to include all groups as members of the Domain Users group so that I don't need to add this for every user?
I'm trying to do something like thisi created a group called www and made this group the owner of the directory/var/www/htmlso i can read and write to it.of course I've add my self to this group, but it seems i can't read and write.the syntax i used was something like chown :www /var/www/html.didn't workonly when i used chown samurai:www /var/www/html i could finally could create new file.the reason i don't want to specify the user name is because I'm thinking of a scenario when i need to give permission to a large group of ppl and don't want to do it user by user.
View 5 Replies View RelatedA bit of an oddity that I've recently run into with my storage folder in my system; it's a newly installed drive that I've set to mount at /storage. When I first tried to use it, programs that I used that attempted to write to it tossed Access Denied errors at me in their own way. Checking the permissions (at the Terminal, ls -l / | grep storage) showed that /storage was set to 'rwxrwxr--'--Owner and Group were given full read/write/execute, but Others could only read. However, my logon to my system is a member of group root. Why, then, with the above bits set, would I not be able to write to it? Changing Others permissions to rwx (and presumably rw would have worked out for me since I don't leave anything executable there) allowed me to write to it, but I don't understand why that would have been necessary. So far as I'm aware, the prior drive that was in my system--mounted at the same location--did not need this treatment.
View 7 Replies View RelatedIs there any way a non-root user can programmatically determine which days the computer ran during, say, the last month?
The information is in /var/log/messages.* but those files are root:root 640.
Non of the world-readable /var/log files on the Slackware 13.0 development system can be used:boot Not present if boot logging not enabled (default). dmesg No timestamps. lastlog Not enough info. wtmp Rewritten on each boot so not enough info. EDIT: not correct: by default wtmp is rotated weekly and kept for one month as configured in /etc/logrotate.conf xdm.log Not present if xdm not used. Xorg.0.log Not present if X not run.
I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 (guest) on Windows 7 (host) with the guest additions installed. I have an auto-mount folder that maps to my D: drive on the host which I can access using sudo ls /media/sf_D_DRIVE - however, even when my user (ross) is a member of the vboxsf group I get a permission denied error when attempting to explore it. I have restarted since adding my user to the vboxsf group.
This should work because I am a member of the group (which has rwx rights), so why doesn't it?
ross@panther:~$ ls -l /media
total 8
drwxrwx--- 1 root vboxsf 8192 2011-07-03 22:24 sf_D_DRIVE
ross@panther:~$ ls -l /media/sf_D_DRIVE/
ls: cannot open directory /media/sf_D_DRIVE/: Permission denied

How can I create a user group that restricts Internet privileges to only members in the group, then I will assigns certain applications to join the group for access to the Internet.

So far, I am using the gnome group policy manager that is standard with ubuntu but Its not working. It is possible that im misdirected and that I should use a firewall instead?
I'm trying to call a specific variable based on a user selection. For example:
Code: Select a file:
[1] foo.tar
[2] bar.tar
Enter a selection: I have already coded each possible selection to have its own variable. If the user selects 2 I need to select $SELECTED_TAR2, or if they select 1 I need to select $SELECTED_TAR1 and then do something like this behind the scenes:
Code: cp /home/user/$SELECTED_TAR2 /home/user/backup/$SELECTED_TAR2
I was thinking something like this:
Code: echo "Enter a selection: "
read -e SELECTED_NUMBER
cp /home/user/$SELECTED_TAR$SELECTED_NUMBER /home/user/backup

I have a text file that currently has around 150 000 usernames in it. I need to somehow group them into smaller groups of 1000 and then add that value into the DB. for example user xzy group 1 (hopefully the groups will be digits incrementing)

how to search for 1000 then assign them group 1 and then 1001-1999 to group 2 etc.
I'm trying to write a small script that will run as root, but launch a command with sudo as another user. I want that user to be whichever user is active user. That is, the user that is using GDM right now, or the one that is logged into the current console. (by current console, I don't mean the user running the script, but rather the user logged into the console currently displayed on the screen.)How can this be done?
Code:
ACTIVE_USER=`somecommand`
test `id -u pulse` -ge 1000 && sudo -u $ACTIVE_USER $*
What can I use for "somecommand"?
How do I give permission to a logged in user to stop/start a specific service without entering a root/sudo password? So they can do a simple "service SomeService stop|start" It is for a headless Ubuntu server.
View 5 Replies View Relatedmy system I want user1 and only user1 to be able to mount and unmount a specific partition, this partition contains backups and is usually mounted read only, needs to be temporarily mounted read/write by user1 while doing the backup.user1 is an unprivileged user. I've read that the user option will let any user mount the file-system (and only that user can then subsequently unmount it) and that the users option allows any user to mount or unmount the file-system.I also found this in mount's man pageQuote:The owner option is similar to the user option, with the restriction that the user must be the owner of the special file. This may be useful e.g. for /dev/fd if a login script makes the console user owner of this device. The group option is similar, with the restriction that the user must be member of the group of the special file.So it looks like I'd need a login script for that user to make the user owner of the device file (/dev/voiceserv/backup in this case)

The code below defines an array of structures in a class. I would like this to be a Static array and then initialize the array in a initialization method. I understand that initialization lists are the way to go but due to the size and complexity of the array I plan on using (the example below is a simple snippet that illustrates the problem) I would like to use the initialization method. However, I cant even get this thing to compile. The error says the reference to the ArrayOfStructs in the initialization routine is undefined.

Is it possible to allow a group/user to execute a command, where one of the parameters of the command is a group as well? example that does not work as intended:
Code:
Cmnd_alias SU=/bin/su -l %group1 This example works sortof, it treats the "%group1" literally. I know I can list out the "/bin/su -l <eachuser>", but as you can imagine that is impractical. In this example, I want people in group2(not shown for brevity sake) to be able to su to someone in group1

I've several servers (windows+linux) that authenticate to an LDAP server. There is one machine that I would like to allow only certain groups from LDAP server to have access and I am not sure where to start.
If that cannot be done, is it possible to disable LDAP root user to access these machines?
