I'm building an RPM that requires adding a cron job into a user's(service account) crontab...from what I see in the manpages, this isn't possible, as the only viable option is to replace the crontab entries already there for previous scripts being run. Either way, as an example I've found I can make it work by directly modifying the crontab file using:
I'd just like to know, is there any MAJOR issues with modifying a the crontabs like this? This is running on a Redhat Enterprise Linux server by the way.
I have a custom built 2.6.37 kernel where I have most of my devices compiled into the kernel. The only modules are related to nouveau (in case I want to go back to proprietary nvidia) and sound drivers. Everything seems to be running fine. However, in /proc/acpi, I'm missing a number of entries, such as thermal_zone/, dsdt, etc. I do have ac_adapter/, battery/, button/, event, processor/ and wakeup. I've gone through what I think is a very detailed review of my kernel config, and I can't find where I've missed something ACPI related. Here is my kernel config with the ACPI section.

I've just built gcc 4.6.0 by myself since there is no update in Mandriva yet and I really needed the updated version, but I must be missing something in its configuration. I added ~/apps/gcc460/bin in front of my PATH, and the lib dir to my LD_LIBRARY_PATH in my .bash_profile, like so:
I still have gcc 4.4.2 installed, but it's now hidden, so gcc --version correctly yields 4.6.0. I finally tried to build my project, all went fine, but at the moment of running it I get: Code: ./EugGame.Release.Linux: /usr/lib64/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.15' not found (required by ./EugGame.Release.Linux)
I assume the correct version is the one located in ~/apps/gcc460/lib, but how do I make my project load the correct lib? Is it possible at all to have two versions of gcc on the same machine? I just found that I should've added lib64 to my LD_LIBRARY_PATH instead of lib. Anyways, even if the problem is solved, I'd like to hear if my configuration is well made or if I should leave LD_LIBRARY_PATH unset and use some other way to override the default search path for stdlib.
I've been working on creating a Live CD with the tools I want, just for my use with system recovery and repair. For the most part, things have gone very well. The Live CD actually works fine, somewhat. I have run in to a problem where it doesn't actually boot on a lot of hardware.
What happens is during boot, while the modules are loading, the boot process hangs and the disc drive spins down. While I thought it might be a kernel problem, I'm using the .config from the latest gentoo Live CD, which boots fine on the same hardware.
I built my slackware system from source code. Bootstrapped, toolchained etc.. The only thing I didn't change was the chost thinking that life would be easier if left alone @ i486. Would I have gained anything if I had used i786 or even pentium4 (pentium4-slackware-linux-gnu)?
I already got all the benefits of optimization when I used (still using) my own CFLAGS CXXFLAGS right? So changing the chost won't do anything speed wise will it? If I used march=prescott when compiling everything am I ok to just forget about the chost value? It's not gonna change anything will it?
I am trying to add a custom resolution (576i) when connecting an ASROCK ION330HT to a panasonic SDTV CRT.
I have previously had success connecting a laptop to the SDTV using powerstrip (Vista). Now that I am using Ubuntu I dont have that option.
I have used xrandr to try and add a 576i resolution (using --newmode, --addmode, --output). When I view the available resolutions using "xrandr -q", for the new 576i resolution I see the following:

Can anyone explain (0x19f)? I am wondering if that is an error??
Getting sick of always having toner saver active when printing in Linux, I've used windows today to "print to file" and examine how the windows driver for my printer manages to override the toner saver settings.
It turns out that the windows driver prepends some PJL commands to the PostScript file that is sent to the printer. Nothing really fancy, so I would like to:Define two logical printers: one that uses the "toner save" feature and one that prints with the highes quality. For the "high quality" printer, prepend the same PJL commands that the windows driver adds.
Any hints on how I can do that (especially adding the PJL commands to the data that is sent to the printer)? My search skills seem to let me down on this one :-(

i just added a wine program to the main menu as it didnt show on default and it has no icon, just a default one which isnt right, so just wanted to know if i can change this icon by inserting the correct image?

However, after a reboot I do not see the new layout in KDE's configuration for these things.

I have been able to successfully build a live Linux CD, the problem is during the course of setting up my new linux instance on my latop I had to install a few items (intel drivers). So got all the files and everything worked after manually installing, but wanted to try to rebuild the CD with all the files in the CD, rather than having to use a USB drive to put the file onto my laptop. When I made the changes to the configuration that I previously used(just edited the chroot file and did lh_build again) nothing happened the binary was no rebuilt. So some questions: If I am wanting to add files into a live CD build how do I do this? How do I rebuild a CD? or Is it possible? (i.e. I have to continually start from scratch each time).
I have a Canon i560 printer, which is rather well supported by Gutenprint drivers. I have been using those for a while and they serve my regular printing needs. However, when I try to print a good quality photo on glossy photo paper, strange stuff happens.The colour doesn't come out nice, but somewhat faded. Worse, no matter how I specify that I want to make a print on 10x15 glossy paper, the actual print is always cut off, printed landscape when I specify portrait, etc. The printer is shared via CUPS and when my wife prints from her Windows XP machine, the printer works normally and the colours look brilliant so there's no problem with the machine itself, it has to be in the driver.
I googled this problem extensively and in my search, I found out that Canon does in fact have a Linux driver for this printer, though it can't be found through their website. It is on their ftp server, however: ftp://download.canon.jp/pub/driver/bj/linux/I installed the driver from there, following instructions that I found on the web and I have the printer working. But...the photo paper size that I want to print on (10x15 centimetres) isn't available in the ppd file. I can also not specify a custom paper size to print on in digikam or gwenview, since that option is greyed out...Since a ppd file is a text file, I decided to see if I could add a custom paper size. I have an extremely urgent support request! I need to create a presentation by Friday. I have selected the template, the elements etc. But, I have to add transition between each text Outlines and each page. It's very easy to add page transition effects. But, so far I have not managed to add automatic custom effect in text transitions (with click).
For example, let's say that I have in page the following format: Text 1 Text 2 Text 3 I want to present the elements as Text 1, then I click the mouse, Text 2 click the mount Text 3 etc. In MS PowerPoint this is done via Master pages.
I tried the same on OO/LibreOffice 3.3: Edit the Slide Master, modified the fonts etc. Then, I tried to add a custom animation in each element. But with no success. First of all, it seems that any effect is named: Outline Text 1: Click to... Second: Even If I accept the fact than there seems to be no way to add an effect for Outline 2 etc, I save and show the presentation. But, instead of a page transition then a blank page that requires a click from me to present the 1st element, I see ALL elements. So, is it possible to do that in OO?
I am new to XFCE and I'd like to ask few question about usage: 1. How can I disable dragging windows through workspaces? I like them to stay at one. 2. How do you configure startup applications? 3. Why XFCE menu doesn't show some of my custom icons? (png, tried more than one, for custom launcher - eclipse) 4. How do I add custom keyboard? (ALT+SHIFT switching) 5. I restarted laptop and all my applications re-opened after restart. I do not want that. How to disable this?
I've heard a long time ago that linux applications are built by having a CLI first, and later writing a GUI above that. Does someone have any reference/links about that subject? I'm interested in the principles of this method.
I am trying to debug a src code that I download from the Internet.It is built with libtool. I am able to debug it with gdb, but i cannot debug it with eclipse.
other than Python, which languages are built into most Linux distros, using a real-time interpreter, like the Python prompt, where you can just enter some commands and test out ideas before actually creating a file with your program?
Okay, just wanted to be perfectly clear on this point... /static/ software builds don't link to /any/ shared libs, right? I.e., can a static-built C program run on a system without a libc installed?
I am trying to to execute multiple programs on multiple remote machines. Each program needs to be run in a custom Environment that is not known at login time. Currently I am using ssh to connect and run the program. My issue is that I'm not sure how setup all the Environment Variables that I need on the remote machine. I was able to write all the environment variables/values (NAME=VALUE) that I needed to a file and place on a shared file server (prog.environment). I thought the best way to approach this would be to write my own utility (custom.shell) that would interpret the environment file and then execute the desired command.
Using zstyle, I can create a custom warning for messages and such, but looking into the man pages and all, I do not see anything for customizing actual error messages in ZSH, as such:

I am trying to create a custom service to manage a minecraft server what runs in a screen session (this is to allow easy console access as opposed to running it as a nohup background process). I am hitting two main issues with this script so far and wondering if anybody is able to shed some light on it, considering I am far from the greatest BASH scripter on Earth.
The issues are related to start and stop. the first issue with start is there is a command run "screen -dmS minecraft java -Xms1024M -Xmx1024M -jar /minecraft/minecraft.jar nogui" what doesn't appear to work, however when run from console (copy and pasted) this command seems to run perfectly. I am uncertain as to why this is not working within the script. Also if run from a script in /minecraft it also appears to work but in the minecraftd script I have created at /etc/init.d it does not work. I think the issue might be related to the location but am not certain on it, nor how to resolve it.
the second issue with stop is that it works sometimes but at other times it does not, overall it seems to work about 30~50% of the time. When it works it passes a couple of disconnection messages to the screen session and then gives the stop command (the command to gracefully terminate the minecraft server). It seems to work more often when using screen that I attach to the minecraft session while it is running but really not sure if this is an issue with my scripting or an issue with how I am passing things to screen.

i have written a bash script to convert flv files (e.g. videos) to xvid to be played on my dvd player. the conversion is not really the issue, as it works. what i am dealing with now are 2 problems i have not found a good workarouond: 1. surpressing the shell output of mencoder completely ( i do not want to see all the mencoder messages). this i have only solved to a certain extend. 2. i want to create a progress bar. this one i have not yet cracked.

Im trying to create the following script...I want to create an interactive script that prompts the user for the following:
user name user home directory user login shell user comment
the script then needs to read those variables that are entered by the user and actually create the user account. and of course, would like the script to display what user account was just created so that i know in fact the script worked successful.
I have made the installation of Qt4 in my Fedora/MacBookPro. It also got a first compiling and running a simple program. The point is that for the compiler to run I need to point out every time where the bin is located, as that:
