When you guys su or su -l in a X terminal as another user and/or root, do your user get a ~/.xauthXXXXXX with the magic cookie of the display owner, which allows him/her to start a GUI application? ... or is that just me? If not, under which environment (KDE, Gnome, etc) and how do you start X then?

I currently have samba setup and connecting. What I am trying to do is have multiple users with access to different directories. For example , let's say there are folders A B C on my Linux machine. I want one guy to see A and C and another guy to see B and C and a third guy to see them all. This of course means that when my wife logs in she won't see them since they're not mounted to her home folder. So what folder should I use and what tricks so that we both have it visible and accessible in Places from the top menu?

I have a server running 24/7. The monitor of this machine is turned off most of the time and the OS is on the login screen.
Other users, in the same local network, use less powerful machines, which could be a thin client or an old Pentium 3 machine. They access their accounts remotely and work with the GUI as if they were sitting in front of the server. Each user sees their own desktop (different themes, screen resolution, etc.). And of course it can happen that several users could log in at the same time.
The usage is modest: mostly web browsing and the usual default applications (office, wine, gimp, etc.). In particular no games or any demanding applications. The users want to use their desktop in graphical mode only.
Question: How do we call this way of using a server? Is it possible with Ubuntu? And how to implement it?
I was wondering how could I display a list of all of my users and their log on time, you know like small reports on what user was connected for how long.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to do a little bit of setup on our new server and could use a hand.I'm working on creating a simple display script that our users can SSH in and invoke, here is what I'm attempting to do.
Requirements.
1. Must run X over ssh on Mac OS X 10.5 or greater
2. Must work in the office, or on the road
Implementation:
1. Set up the system to auth against LDAP (Open Directory)
2. Create a script on the PATH that checks which displays are available, and launches Xephyr for the first available one.
3. Create a client script that performs the SSH and Xephyr command so that users can simply click the script to start an X session.
I have 1 set up, but I'm having issues with 2 and hence 3. For instance, I can start XNest with the following commands.Start my SSH session
ssh ninet@10.0.1.50 -X
Load XNest
Xnest :1 -ac -geometry 1024x768 -once -query localhost
I have two user accounts on this machine. This problem is particularly noticed when browsing the web in Google Chrome (though I'm not sure if this a Chrome-only problem, so I'm posting this here). My distro is Kubuntu, but all my user accounts use Gnome.
Basically, I have the same font and display settings set up on both user accounts, but the fonts are not showing up the same. I'm not sure if at some point a long time ago I did something on one account that I never did on another to change something, but either way I can't seem to find any difference in any of the settings, yet the display is still different.
This is easier explained with screenshots.

Note how the fonts appear bold and not bold, note the different appearance of the (c) character on the webpage, and note the size of the "Google" image is different.
For Chrome settings, both are set at 100% zoom, so this is not an issue of scale. Both user accounts are also set at 1600x900 resolution. Notice that the Google Chrome fonts are both set exactly the same, as are the Gnome system fonts.
Does anybody have a clue what I'm forgetting to check here? I believe the 2nd user account is the correct one, and the 1st one is wrong, since it clearly looks uglier.
Can someone please tell me how I can use grep to display all users running a particular command.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Debian machine running IceWM. I want to set it up so when userA signs in they get a screen resolution of 1280x1024 and normal size icons and normal size cursors. Then I want it setup so if UserB signs in they get a screen resolution of 800x600 larger icons and larger mouse cursor icons. How can I customize the display settings per user with IceWM? I did not see where I can set these options in ~/.icewm/preferences.

To my surprise, when I create new users with my openSUSE 11.4, they are all assigned to the 'users' shared group by default.To test this, I created a new user called 'friends'. From my terminal, I can see how the new user files look like:

I have a fresh install of OpenSUSE 11.4 64bit and I have installed the AMD Display drivers for my Radeon HD 5970. Everything seems to be working quite well. I have a multiple monitor setup (1280x1024 monitor and a 1920x1080 monitor).
I have my primary display set to 1920x1080, however when I try to enable the second display, I get a CRTC error that the display is over the maximum (1920x1920). If I enable both monitors at lower resolutions, there is no problem.
I have done a fair bit of reading and have been unable to determine where this maximum is set, or how to change it. I'd like to be able to run both monitors at their native resolutions.
I am not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I am trying to find out how I can modify forms on my Windows partion. I am running a dual boot with Win 7 and Open Suse 11.2. I can access and read the NTFS files but can not change them or add to the Win 7 Partion. How do I change ownership and permissions so that I can work on them from Open Suse 11.2

Attempting to install one doesn't seem to lead anywhere othe than the same sequence. I used to be able to read NTFS partitions with 11.2 - what has changed?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI wonder how to get Samba share access working well...Dolphin supports Samba but it doesn't really mount anything, it seems... Non-KDE Applications therefor can't access samba that way. In Gnome there was a workaround for the same problem. You could simply go to ~/.gvfs in any application and find the samba mounted there.Is there anything like that in KDE? I set up a Samba mount via /etc/fstab for now but that is quite annoying because it fails after each Suspend, changing WLAN Access Points, etc. Then I have to go to the console and manually launch sudo mount -a to get it working again. How can I make things more comfortable?
P.S.: I'm even up for using something else than Samba to talk to my fileserver. However I don't know of anything that would work better in this regard. (NFS would have the exactly same problem for example)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm in the situation where I'm trying to create 2 private networks using ESX server, all behind a NAT router (static ips are used). I used an openSuse11 vm as a router and was able to configure it so that a machine on one private network was able to access the public network. The problem I have now it that I need to be able to access a machine on the private network from the public network using a different set of IP's.
So if a machine in the private network has an IP of 10.1.0.222 I should be able to ping it using 10.99.0.222 or some other IP. I have never done this before and after reading up on iptables and linux routing I feel more confused than before. Is it possible to add IPs to eth0 (public) and have them mapped to machines on a private network eth1 or eth
I am running openSUSE 11.3 KDE on my computer, which I have the printer and scanner attached to, all in working order;I would like to know how I can get my girlfriend's Windows 7 Laptop to be able to access that hardware on her computer (without having the need to change to USB plugs back and forth) - both our computers are on the SAME router so I am hoping that we can 'network'(?) the two computers despite the OSes are quite different.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI don't know why, but all of a sudden when I plug in a Corsair flash drive with a fat32 files system, it registers on the notifier, but when I try to open it in Dolphin, Dolphin opens in the /home/documents folder. Ditto when I try it as root. Media won't open to anything, and when I click on the Corsair listing in the folders on the left side of Dolphin, I get the error message: unknown file system 'vfat'. I have used this drive for over a year with no previous problems, and can access it in 11.3 on my laptop, so I suspect that a setting or something in my system has changed.

Group dialout has RW permissions.So,I guess the user has to belong to 'dialout' group.Even after a user is included in dialout port,still the user is unable to access,"Permission is Denied".
Before OS 11.2,I used to make the users members of group "uucp" to get serial port access.I tried that also in OS 11.2,without luck.So,I have to be root to access it. This requirement itself seems to be one of the fossils of old time Linux where for normal usage of PC resources,one needed elevated privileges.I guess the trend now is to let the user do all PC work,but in a safe way.
