OpenSUSE :: The Return Of The Prodigal "X"?
Jul 1, 2011
I see from the System Monitor that "X" is runnig and not "Xorg." Why isit happening and should I be bothered about it?-Graham Davis, Bracknell, Berks.openSUSE 11.4; KDE 4.6.4; AMD Phenom II X2 550 Processor;Video: nVidia GeForce 210; Sound: ATI SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA);

so I installed openSUSE 11.3 KDE and fooled around with it and the Plasma Netbook Workspaces and am now back with the regular KDE. Unfortunately something I have done has now caused me to not be able to do simple tings like change the wallpaper, or add Widgets to the desktop. Everything seems to "technically" work, so I suspect that it was a configuration somewhere that I messed up.
Is there a directory or directories I can delete and then log out and back in which will create the environment with default settings? I've done this with Gnome and Xfce when I've really messed it up and it has fixed things a number of times, but I am not sure where KDE stores their config files. I believe is it openSUSE 11.3 with the KDE version that came with it and it was installed from a LiveCD.

I have KDE DE in openSUSE 11.4 Tumbleweed.
The issue is with Ktorrent.
When I put the machine to sleep (suspend to ram) with Ktorrent running and then wake the machine up again, the torrents that were working do resume. But they resume in a very poor fashion, continually going into and out of "stalled" status. This bad connectivity continues indefinitely.
I have to kill Ktorrent and restart it to get good data flow back for the torrents that are running. Is there an explanation for this? And is there something I can do to make the torrents resume nicely when I bring the machine back from sleep?

I today upgraded to 11.4 using a downloaded DVD.
I was at 11.3/kde4.6.1. I did a clean install of 11.4, reusing my /home partition from 11.3. This is a desktop, legacy ATI (uses RADEON driver)
After the install process, I ran YAST-Software Management to grab recent updates.
Rebooted system, all seemed OK.
I then added the KDE46/11.4 repo, ran YAST and performed a "Switch to files in this repo" to move to 4.6.1.
I logged out, but cannot log back in, I simply return to the Greeter GUI after a brief blip.
Logging in to console, I don't see anything definitive in /var/log/* as to what the problem might be.

I'm trying to figure out the syntax needed to run a command that will spew out output (which I don't need) but go back to allowing me to run other commands without closing that program.Basically I run:
Code:
./utserver
and it starts and gives output but I want to run other commands without needing to open a new tab or close that program.

i am having two small issues with a function i have made.sorry if it is a mess, i am still learning bash.the first is calling the nonpersistssh function (second line) and assigning the return value to nonpersistdiag.the function returns 1, but nonpersistdiag seems to only contain 0. i am unsure on how to proceed.the second problem is the nested else clause on line 10. it is a syntactical error. how would i declare it correctly?
Code: function endsession(){
nonpersistdiag=$[nonpersistssh]# a function that returns an exit code
sudo /etc/init.d/ssh stop; sshdiag=$?

ok, I pressed alt-ctrl-f1 and it displayed my screen with a gui. I then pressed alt-ctrl-f2 and it displayed a textual desktop. I pressed alt-ctrl-f3 and it displayed the same thing. When I pressed alt-ctrl-f1 to return to my gui, it would not let me return to a gui. I was stuck in a cmd line textual desktop.
How, without restarting, do i return to a gui once I press alt-ctrl-f2??

I'm confused about what "echo $0" in a shell actually return. Consider these tests:
Code:
[root@e11apvl151 ~]# # Login shell:
[root@e11apvl151 ~]# echo $0
-bash
[root@e11apvl151 ~]# # Starting a new shell
[root@e11apvl151 ~]# bash
[root@e11apvl151 ~]# echo $0
bash
[root@e11apvl151 ~]# screen
[root@e11apvl151 ~]# echo $0
/bin/bash
Depending on wether the shell is a login shell, a regular shell, or a screen utility, I get different results.

I upgraded to 4.4.3 from 4.4.2 this morning from AlienBob's packages (although I see they are now part of -current, but the mirrors are still behind) and I can no longer return from suspend on my laptop. I get a black screen with a mouse pointer that moves freely but it does not bring up my desktop. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace will bring me back to the console as it should, but this is a huge step backward. A few times I got a message about a new screen being detected after resuming but now it's just blank. I am running an intel onboard graphics card on an Asus laptop.

This is a problem which has been plaguing me ever since the upgrade from Karmic to Lucid.
I used to be able to log into any one of the seven TTYs.
CTRL-ALT F1-six all work fine. Problem is if I log into one I can't get back to the GUI.
Immediately after the upgrade, I was told by some people that this was deprecated along with startx and I should use sudo gdm service start instead.
This doesn't work for me If I have to open a terminal when a nasty game freezes and I have to kill it from a terminal.

I dual boot with XP, My upgrade to 11.04 has been two weeks of FUBAR. I want the 10.04 LTS again. With the 10.04 disk in, I get to the point of "Prepare Disk Space"; it shows XP-pro 81Gb and Ubuntu 11.04 75Gb. There I must choose side-by-side, Use Entire Disk, or Specify partitions Manually. My Question/Problem> The new 11.04 kernel seems so incompatible with my system that I wonder if I need to delete or reformat. Am I likely to have success if I just tell it to do side-by-side.

I have a file:
979798707
787862348
766428634
I want to see if all the records in the file are present in the contents of the files of a particular directory.
Basically I want to say if grep doesn't return anything, then report.
For example in /tmp dir I have 4 files and flast 2 values (787862348 and 766428634) are present in the files of /tmp dir, but first one (979798707) is not. I want to echo that in a reporting file.
something like:
while read line
do
# if ! grep -rl $line /tmp
echo $line >> are_not_present
done < "myFile"
How do I achieve " if ! grep -rl $line /tmp"? That is, if the line is found by grep, then grep will print the output, but if grep does'nt find it, it will print nothing. How can I check if grep didn't find it (i.e. printed nothing)?
