OpenSUSE Install :: After Update Can't Get To X :"no Job Control In This Shell"
Jan 21, 2011
After an update today, my kernel got upgraded to kernel-2.6.34.8-6-default. With this update, my old initrd-2.6.34.7-0.7-default got removed and corresponding grub menu options also got removed. Now after reboot,I am dropped to a shell with the last message being "no job control in this shell". I cannot startx or change to init 5. In fact, the 'boot' partition is not mounted.Even the root partition ( LVM volume ) is not mounted. I guess there was some problem in the initrd creation. I do not know the reason. An earlier post with this title seems to think problem in fstab. But my fstab was not touched by the update. How to get back to normal desktop?

About a week ago, I installed all the updates that popped up. I didn't actually look at what was being installed.
Since then, most of the items in the Yast2 Control centre won't run and just pop up an error box with the following (Firewall):
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::logic_error'
what(): basic_string::_S_construct NULL not valid

I installed OpenSuse 11.4 Gnome on my Toshiba laptop. A couple of things i noticed while trying the live CD first is that the file manager recognized my NTFS partitions and after I installed I expected it to do the same. Also, while installing I thought I selected a secure logon with username & password. After installation it boots right into the desktop GUI. I haven't had a lot of time playing with OpenSuse yet and I have browsed through some threads and I couldn't find a way to configure a secure logon and do I have to mount the Windows partitions in the Command Line or is there a tool I can use in the control center?

I am having with my openSUSE upgrade.
I followed the upgrade directions, found here, precisely. However, I am still experiencing some unusual problems, some I think I have resolved, but others are leaving me puzzled.
Before I get to far into this, my working knowledge of *NIX platforms is decent, but I am no where close to expert or advanced.
Problem 1 - KDE Profiles (resolved)
The first problem I experienced was that my KDE profiles were all screwed up, buttons would not work, desktop icons were missing, applications would not start or would show horrid graphics, and the list goes on. Having run through a similar problem with FreeBSD, I decided to simply move my ~/.kde4 to ~/.kde4.orig and then do a forced reinstall of KDE4. This seems to have resolved the issue, I just have to recreate my profile, which should be relatively simple.
Problem 2 - Sound Driver
Shortly after my upgrade, I did have sound, but I had lost control of the volume. This is somewhat expected as with each Kernel update of Linux, I found I had to reinstall the sound drivers, Creative X-Fi. This never presented a problem as it was a 30 second process and very simple to perform (there were three commands, four if you include 'su -'). This time, I ended up running into an error, seen below:
Code:
This brings me to my third problem...
Problem 3 - VMware
Similar to the sound card, each time a new Kernel patch is applied, I have to recompile VMware Workstation 6.5 for it to work again. This is even simpler than the sound drivers as all I do is start VMware and it automatically recompiles. Now, when I go to start it, I receive the two following errors:
This appears upon trying to start VMware Workstation...
This appears when I click 'Install'...
Problem 4 - Kernel...
The previous two problems seem to be related to some underlying kernel issue that I have yet to be able to resolve. I have barely been able to change the error messages. So far I have forced a reinstall of almost everything kernel related that was already installed, plus I installed quite a few *-devel packages. I reinstalled 'make' and 'gcc' for good measure, but I am not getting anywhere.

socat - exec:'bash -li',pty,stderr,ctty -> bash: no job control in this shell
What options should I use to get fully fledged shell as I get with ssh/sshd? I want to be able to connect the shell to everything socat can handle (SOCKS 5, UDP, OpenSSL), but also to have a nice shell which correctly interprets all keys, various Ctrl+C/Ctrl+Z, tab completion, up/down keys (with remote history).
- Found "setsid" socat option. It fixes "no job control". Now trying to fix Ctrl+D.
- socat file:`tty`,raw,echo=0 exec:'bash -li', pty, stderr, setsid, sigint, sane. Not it handles Ctrl+D/Ctrl+Z/Ctrl+C well, I can start Vim inside it, remote history is OK.

As a Fan of openSuSE on the Desktop i'm about to create the version 2.0 of our local LUGS munotLinux distribution which should be localized for switzerland and contain a lot of additional software.
For this case I tried to modify the control.xml file in the root image for yast to hide the dialogs for language/keyboard layout, location and deskop choice (it will be a kde based distro). I can set the language, keyboard and location defaults correctly, but I couldn't get any success in disabling the regarding dialogs yet. And after all googeling and reading the available documentation I can't find a hint about the correct way to modify the control.xml this way.

I'm having trouble with Yast, I noticed today that I can't open the control centre from the desktop (along with install/remove software) when opening from the command line I get. the following output:
** (y2controlcenter-gnome:9050): WARNING **: error accessing /desktop/gnome/lockdown/disable_command_line [Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See GConf configuration system for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.)]
Yast2 control centre opens, but none of the options load when selected. I have tried updating everything through Zypper which didn't work. (aka zypper ref/up etc). Then I tried removing yast and installing it again. When I did this (and downloaded the Yast control centre again the above errors, reappeared.

something odd I've noticed with 11.3 on my laptop--if I adjust my resolution through the Monitor applet in the Control Center or if I make changes to my Touchpad settings through the Control Center, the changes are lost when I log into my laptop. Do you think I botched an installation?
I've tried to determine what actual files are affected via the two applets with the thought that maybe I don't have the necessary permissions on them or that I can throw a bandaid on it with a start-up task to overwrite them. Alas, I've got nuthin'

I have Suse 11.3 KDE dual boot with Win 7. There is a Desktop Folder on the main screen, with one icon named "My Computer". when I click this icon, Konqueror opens a window with detailed information of the System along with Disk Information (detailed partitions of Windows 7). Once I select any one of these partitions, it opens the one said partition.
One thing I have noticed, if I "Right Click" a folder in this Win 7 partition, there is an option of opening that folder with Dolphin Super user Mode. After using this, I can edit the contained subfolders or files. On the other hand if there is a file (i.e. outside a folder), there is no option of Super user Mode and I cannot edit these files. at times I have to rename them or delete them. But for doing so I have to restart computer and go into Windows (which I don't like)is there any way of having a full control of Suse and Windows (permanently). I read the thread mentioned here: FSTAB - Editing Manually

I'm setting up an Ubuntu server and I keep getting strange problems with my editor.I'm not sure if this is because my keyboard configuration is wrong or I screwed up the installation but regardless it's quite frustrating.
When using the movement keys (arrows and numpad) I get "[" brackets and "C"s, if I hold down or push down on the key hard a list of errors and text comes up, usually involving something that says something like:"Mount disabled" or "____ disabled press CONTROL-X to restart the shell"Similair problems are also found in vi (when in insert mode).I have been plagued with text editor problems and have need several reboots just to get out of a file, often because it just flat out stopped responding to keyboard commands.

I have a program that I run from the terminal that requires manual input (it's matlab in mex debugging mode, matlab -Dgdb, which starts the GNU C debugger with its own custom settings).
Every time I run this program I always type in the same few commands in the program's interactive shell before I actually start working (for example: run -nojvm; stop at mexFunction; continue). I want to avoid typing these commands and I thought I could do this with shell scripting, saving the commands in the mycommands file, then running: myprogram < mycommands
The problem is that this runs all the commands and then exits the program. I want it to run the commands and return control to me so I can run my commands. Is there a way to tell the shell to use a file or a string as the input to a program then immediately return control to the user without the exiting the program?

I've just installed the latest OpenSUSE 11.3 Gnome 3 Reload [and in so doing, by the way, replaced two other oses one advertised as something else but turned out to be what I regard as a poor imitatian of OpenSUSE 11.3 (and to add insult to injury it even identified itself as OpenSUSE 11.3 after install!) and the other a Linux distro more popular than OpenSUSE but failing to deliver a working Gnome 3 shell].
Which brings me to the subject at hand: Gnome 3 shell. I'm presently using the Gnome 3 panel (which I got after having to select the failsafe option after rebooting). OpenSUSE's Gnome 3 shell display is all jumbled up to the point of being unusable. Although I couldn't make out any legible print in the terminal (most of the Applications icons are recogniseable if rather tattered-looking), I had hoped I could still type in su>enter>password>enter>nvidia-xconfig>enter.
What do I do now to get a screenshot-like Gnome 3 shell display? I realize that this computer is rather resource-shabby, but I figure that if it'll run MintMenu, it should be able to run any other Gnome shell.

I installed 11.3 last week and eventually got nvidia drivers working. I was quite happy how most things were progressing, then the temptation to upgrade to 11.4 got too much I upgraded today (online, not dvd) and everything went well. On rebooting the desktop came up as normal and all was good. I installed nvidia and got that working ok. I then installed Gnome-Shell and couldn't figure out how to get it working. I've been using Fedora recently and the Gnome-Shell option is available at Login. I then discovered the gnome-shell --replace terminal command and I tried it. It seemed to load ok, but as I had used the terminal, when I closed the terminal it seems like compiz crashed. I lost all windows borders and nothing was usable. I REISUB'd and started again. On reboot I got a CLI login prompt. After logging in I tried startx, to no avail. I then tried gdm start and got to the desktop again (not gnome-shell). I Alt+F2'd and ran gnome-shell --replace again and all was good - except no network I rebooted again, and got the CLI again. Went through it all again and tried to configure network (wireless) no good. I then connected an ethernet cable and tried again. That worked, but I'm not sure why - I didn't think anything was downloaded. Anyway wireless now works ok - even on reboot. However I'm still getting dumped to the CLI login on restarts.

I am trying to install OpenSuse 11.3 x64 via EFI. I successfully performed a Windows 7 install and I'm trying to do the same thing with OpenSuse now. My system boots into the EFI shell. I can cd into the /efi/boot/ folder and run bootx64.efi. Immediately after I press enter I am presented with an ELILO boot: prompt which either eventually times out and continues or I can press enter and have it continue. Either way my system resets and just boots back to the EFI shell again.
Running bootx64.efi worked for starting the Windows 7 setup but it doesn't appear to be working with OpenSuse. Is this a broken feature or am I doing something wrong?

how to update my system online (for example my firefox 3.0 to 3.5) but i can't figure out how this possibly works. I tried the "online update" using Yast2 but apparently (according to Yast) there is nothing at all to be patched on my system. I tried to click on the Firefox-3.5.5 rpm in the repository web-interface and open it using "install software" but the process aborts because of unresolved dependencies. Is there an easy way to update software without having to download/install every dependency manually?

I have just visited this page here, Updating openSUSE - openSUSE I have been trying to update my OpenSuSE system for a week now and I have absolutely no idea what causes this problem. The update would start but would stop right in the middle and refuse to install some pulseaudio(...) package... It would indicate that network is down while I am sure it is up.
I am behind a proxy and I have again and again made sure that the proxy settings are correct and alright. Since it downloads some of the packages in the start I believe my connection and settings are OK. Maybe the SuSE server is down, but not for a whole week, I don't think so. I would also like to mention that I have only tried updating through YaST GUI and I am, as of yet, unaware of any console or command-line methods of updating.
I really would like to update my system because I happen to be paranoid in matters of computer security. (Just kidding) But since I cannot install any updates it should mean I might have problem installing new software. So my digital life is literally crippled because of this problem.
