OpenSUSE Hardware :: Unable To Get XSane Permission With 11.4?

Jun 10, 2011

I recently installed 11.4 32bits, and got everything working, including my Canon Lide25 Scanner with XSane. It suddenly stopped working, not seing the device anymore; I suspect it happened after installing VirtualBox, butreally not sure of that.

Basically, as root I can launch Xsane and scan, and Yast also sees the Scanner and the test is succesful, so a permission issue I believe. As I don't know exactly when/why this happened, does anyone know how I could troubleshoot ? Check for UDEV rules or so ? a group I should be in ? I don't know where to start and don't want to fiddle around and break something

I am tired, and I simply can't find an easy answer. So, today I need the scanner in slackware64 13.1, only to find that it does not work as user. I have an HP Deskjet F2180 and using CUPS it is identified as hp:/usb/Deskjet_F2100_series?serial=CN81H4S2SP04TK.In the past the simple solution was to add oneself to the right groups, but it does not work this time.As user I get:

OpenSUSE :: Traceroute Broken In 11.4 - Unable To Create ICMP Send Socket: Permission Denied?

Apr 5, 2011

Code: # traceroute -I 69.12.32.2 Note: the -i and -I options were exchangedfor compability with LBL traceroute Use -I for ICMP, and -i <ifname> to specify the interface name unable to create ICMP send socket: Permission denied Note that the command was done as root. This worked in 11.3.

And yes, it works without the "-I". But it should work with the "-I". One shouldn't have to boot into Windows, just to run "tracert" there.

OpenSUSE :: Dolphin: Unable To Add The Permission "Is Executable" To The File: Eclipse

Jul 24, 2011

I'm trying to get Eclipse IDE running on my openSUSE 11.4 (KDE).

I have downloaded Eclipse Classic from Eclipse Classic 3.7 | Eclipse Packages. I started Dolphin and extracted the tar.gz file to a directory called eclipse. Now, as I understand, to run Eclipse, I must run the executable eclipse. But when I double-click eclipse, I get an error saying, "There is no application installed that can open files of the type executable (application/x-executable)."

Note 1: I have uploaded 3 screenshots as an album at Imgur: Eclipse with image titles and captions.

According to the screenshot #1, the file eclipse has a permission set of -rw-------. The execute permission is missing on this file. So, here's what I did: (screenshot #2) Right-clicked and selected Properties and under the Permissions tab, checked the Is executable checkbox and clicked OK. But still (screenshot #3), the permission set remains the same.

Note 2: The parent directory permissions are visible in the Terminal window below in all the screenshots.

What should I do to make eclipse executable?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Set Execute Permission?

Jun 18, 2011

I have a triple boot system with Ubuntu 11.04, Windows 7 and Windows-XP on it. My disc configuration is something like this... ('cause I think it would be required for you to understand my problem) I have a 250GB hard disk which was originally partitioned with Windows-XP in six partitions C,D,E,F,G and H (All NTFS type) with 'C' drive having Windows-XP on it and 'D' drive having Windows-7 on it.

I installed Ubuntu on the 'H' drive by partitioning it into two halves of approximately 20GB each. One partition is named 'New Volume' as per Windows naming scheme. On the other partition I installed my Ubuntu-11.04 OS. As per my plan I would be using this 'New Volume' for all my Ubuntu related data and software only. I want to install 'Ant' build tool for Java to be usable on my Ubuntu. For this, as described on the Apache Ant user manual I downloaded the 'apache-ant-1.8.2-bin.tar.gz' and extracted it. All this I did in the 'New Volume' drive.

Now as per the 'Ant' manual I needed to change a file's ('/media/New Volume/ubuntu files/software files/apache-ant-1.8.2/bin/ant') permission to executable, which is currently set to '-rw-------' and I want it to be '-rwx------'. I've tried various things such as 'chmod/sudo' and also tried changing the permission with the 'root' user, but so far I've not been able to change the permissions for this file. However, if I copy the 'apache-ant-1.8.2' folder to '/home' directory then I've been able to change the permission for the concerned file.

Ubuntu :: Unable Yo Delete The Files Having Permission?

Jun 1, 2011

Is there no good way to assign permissions so that users can create files, modify files but cannot delete them? I know there's the sticky bit, but all that does is say that only the owner (who is a single user) is able to delete them. Ideally, what I want is to be able to use the sticky bit, but apply it to the file's group, rather than the file's owner.

Here's the example: I have a folder that is shared publicly. I want people not belonging to the folder's group to be able to create files, modify files, but not delete them. I want the folder's group to have full control. This would be possible if the sticky could apply to the folder's group, instead of the owner. I've looked into ACLs, but from what I gather, it's still just assigning permissions "none" "read" and "write," none of which would stop someone deleting a file, while still letting them create or modify (unless they were the owner, which is not helpful).

OpenSUSE :: Virtualbox 4 Changes Permission On /usr?

Feb 26, 2011

i have virtualbox installed from the oracle virtualbox repositorie and had trouble with running virtual machines. It was a permission error: VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT

Turns out after some searching that the permission had changed on /usr to
owner:chris and group:vboxusers. Directories inside /usr still belonged to the user root and the group root.

I don't know how much of a security issue this is, but i wanted it to let
you all know just in case it is. I changed /usr again to root:root and all is well again.
