In Ubuntu, almost all of my hardware connected right out of the box (I'm sure you've heard this sob story before). The only problems I've had with that was getting the wireless to work; I now have some shell scripts I've put together that use ndiswrapper to get it up and going within 15 minutes after a fresh install, and it works from then on with no problems. My only other concern was that the 3D from my Radeon isn't that good, but that's no bog concern right now.
So, long story short, I downloaded the openSUSE 11.2 usb install, set it up, booted it live and watched the magic happen. KDE is beautiful as always, and I must admit that I'm impressed with the distro's power. I installed to the HDD, eventually reinstalled GRUB2 from Ubuntu, and got to work (notice, all of the following happened with either distro's copy of grub, in fact openSUSE's grub caused more problems).
HOWEVER, I do have a few concerns:
1) Sound. I spend probably 50% of my computer time listening to music, browsing the internet, or (usually) both. In the LiveUSB mode, sound worked perfect; the login/logout sounds worked nicely and any extra noises worked too. Now, I boot into the HD install and get error messages saying my Realtek AC97 isn't working. Of course, to complicate things, if I go into the YaST->Hardware->Sound and do a sound test, it works great; just, everything else doesn't work sound-wise.
2) Wireless. I have a Broadcomm BCM4318 AirForce 51 card; as I mentioned, I used Ndiswrapper in Ubuntu to get it working. In openSUSE, the wireless light on my laptop's case glows (as it does when it's operating fine), the system recognises that it's there, but I can't manage to connect to the internet. Is there some process you must go through to locate and connect to a wireless router? Do I HAVE to manually enter all of the information of my router or is there an option to scan for networks? I used a scan button in the network manager and it just showed a map with an image of a PC with four 'waves' going to the right. Maybe a tutorial on setting up wlan would be helpful.
3) Boot. Well, this is more of an annoyance than anything else...when I boot into openSUSE, it shows the scrolling text as it loads everything and, at the very end, manages to fail to boot into rootlevel 5, going to 3 instead. All I have to do is type "startx" and it'll boot into the desktop GUI, but is there a way to tell the system to run that command automatically? (p.s. another "fix" mentioned finding 'xde' and setting it to run on level 5, my system only has xde.rej which I thought was odd).

I recently bought a set of 2.1 speakers, all is fine. I like to listen to my DAB radio through them. When I boot up, (runlevel 3), sound is there via the mic/line-in jack, but as soon as KDE starts, the sound cuts. I have made a computer for my 11 year old son. I installed 11.3 on the drive. It all works now except for one thing. The wireless wants to access the key ring but it's locked until I give it the password The problem with this is ntp doesn't set the time properly because the network is not up until the password is input. And even then it doesn't work because the server it attached to ( god knows where) isn't giving the correct time. I want to unlock the keyring permanently. This system doesn't run a nuclear missile silo and it's behind a pretty good fire wall. So security isn't a big concern. SO how do I unlock the hey ring to get the wireless to come up on boot?
I've just upgraded from openSUSE 11.2 to 11.3. In 11.2 everything worked fine: I've booted my laptop, logged in and turn my wireless card on using the hardware wireless button, the KDE Wallet opened up, I inserted the password and voil�, wireless connection was on.But after upgrading from 11.3, it doesn't work like that anymore. I need to have the hardware wireless button pressed to on during boot, otherwise Network Manager will not work. And yes, I do check the "Enabled wireless" option, but it doesn't work. When I tried to check it out, I found out that the wireless "Scan" button that scans and displays the available wireless connections shows nothing.So, if I forget to put the wireless on for boot, I must restart and put it on. I've tried log off and log on, and restarting some network services, but neither worked.I have an Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG, as showed below, and I'm posting this message using it.

Right now I either can have wireless or sound. When I get sound I lose my wireless which may be due to some kernel issue. I use the madwifi, madwifi-kmp-default, madwifi-kmp-pae, & compat-wireless-kmp-pae for my athero ar 9285. This gets my wireless going.
I followed SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE and couldn't get sound
Then I followed Alsa-update-snapshot - openSUSE
I get sound but lose my wireless. I reinstall madwifi-kmp-pae, & compat-wireless-kmp-pae. I have to downgrade some kernel conflicts and I have wireless, but no sound. My sound information is here [URL].
Since I upgraded to 11.2 I don't hear a sound when I boot my computer and I'd like to (the way it was in previous versions). How can I turn it on again??
Suse 11.2 - KDE 4.3.5. I have only one sound card. The only Pulse software that is installed is libpulse0 and libxine1-pulse. All sound applications work. Amarok, vlc, kaffeine, Skype etc. But then every say 6th. or 7th. boot the sound dies. On everything. Even the startup melody. When I go to Yast>Hardware>Sound everything looks in order but the test on the card makes no sound. But if I delete the active card then re-enable it everything works again.
I saved the working /etc files as *.works and ran the following script...
The only difference was a slight volume difference in asound.state (23 vs 27).
I thought I might try to diagnose it by doing a file search for file changes in the last 5 minutes immediately after I run the Yast re-enable.
After installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing,zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.
I'm using OpenSuse 11.1 (but it applies also to 11.0) on a Dell XPS, NetworkManager and scpm to manage profiles. I configured wireless network without problems and all runs perfectly. The annoying problem is that the wireless connection doesn't start at boot. Also by clicking on the NetworkManager applet networks are not displayed
But, as soon as I launch network configuration from Yast without do anything other, magically the wireless network is recognized and the PC connects to it.
It seems that the network configuration from Yast activates NetworkManager to connect or it activates the interface or the hardware.
I have a local 3G data card which i need to set up on each boot using terminal. I have searched a HELL LOT and found a way to do it. The following are the commands to be run :
I'm a regular OpenSuse user, but recently I had to download Windows7 on my computer for work. Everything was fine for a while, but now when I switch to windows, the wireless doesn't work sometimes (sometimes it works just fine). When this happens wireless is broken on the Linux side as well. The only way I know to fix it is to hard wire the laptop when booted into windows, and then everything is back to normal. It's really starting to tick me off and I have no idea what may be causing it. I didn't even know the two partitions can effect each other.
I've just setup my mother's desktop PC (HP P6510F) which has a wired connection to the internet, with 64-bit openSUSE-11.3 KDE-4.4.4 desktop. Her PC also has a wireless device, so I decided to set that up. I have it working with the internet (using knetworkmanager), but I have to launch knetworkmanager from a terminal each boot, as it is not launched every boot by default.
What is the 'proper' way to have knetworkmanager launched every boot in KDE4 ? (I can hack at this, but if there is a preferred/recommended method, I would rather use that). I suspect no more detail is needed, but in case one is curious: Her wireless is:
I have a Microsoft Wireless keyboard / mouse which I use for my Windows world. I have tried booting the OpenSuSE 10.2, 11 DVDs, but none of them recognize the wireless keyboard that I have connected and I am unable to proceed with the installation because, the default selection in OpenSuSE's first installation screen is *Boot from HardDisk* I also tried using the Ubuntu Live CD that I had, the same problem of keyboard not recognized, but the lucky part was, the first screen in the live CD was a language selection and the default language was English and timed out and moved onto booting the Live CD. Once the booting was over, the wireless keyboard and mouse worked like a charm!
asus K60IJ intel 4400 dual-core 4gb ram trying to setup suse 11.2 64bit as dual boot. works fine with win7 in dual boot and system boots great. been following forums to setup wireless. after doing all term commands, it see's both built in wireless (atheros ar9285) on the pci-e and the usb verizon broadband modem as (curitel brand modem). after checking kernal dmesg, it see's devices but looking at usr/sbin/iwconfig, it see's no eth0. checked at the asus website and see nothing on getting any kind of ethernet drivers.
Using tips provided in the "Sticky" posts, I have identified my wireless device -- BCM4322 -- and installed the necessary firmware and drivers. The device appears in Network Manager until system reboot, at which time the "ssd" driver module is loaded instead. After each boot I must execute the following commands to remove ssd and load the Broadcom driver:
rmmod ssb modprobe lib80211 modprobe wl
The Broadcom README file provides directions to load the correct module automatically, but the commands appear to be incompatible with openSUSE 11.4. I'm happy to provide additional detail if needed
Above adapter can be installed on v10.2 and 11.3 using ndiswrapper:-
1. Copy the 3 driver files from Windows:- like netwpn111.inf, WPN111.sys & ar5523.bin. (Be carfeul about the exact names, because they have changed over time).
2. sudo ndiswrapper -i netwpn111.inf
3. sudo ndiswrapper -m
4. sudo modprobe ndiswrapper (the adapter should light up at this point and networks will be detected shortly after - see network manager). (Be careful of paths here - e.g. I had to use /sbin/modprobe - so 'whereis' may be necessary to find these commands).
2nd When I reboot, I need to run the modprobe command again. How do I make the module load automatically on boot? Also (and this is minor), can I bypass the KWallet, keyring thing? it seems silly to enter a password for the keyring and then click another password dialog, when I can just as easily enter the password for the network itself.

I had some viruses as my program told me and in the end I had to restart my eee pc!Problem is now after it starts and you click on the log me in icon for the netbook it makes the nice hello sound, takes some time and then does the shut down (goodbye) sound. So basically the netbook booted already right? But I cant log myself in! What can I do?
I installed Mangler and one of its requirements was pulse-audio. I installed pulse-audio everything worked great except i couldn't get sound out of wow if i started mangler first and vice-versa. I then found a version of Mangler that worked with alsa. So i uninstalled mangler and pulse-audio, installed mangler-alsa. Everything works great now. The problem is when i uninstalled Pulse-audio i lost all my sliders in Yast > Hardware > Sound > other > volume. The only thing that shows up is master volume > Test. My sound works great just can't adjust anything. How do i get my sliders back. I would like some advice before i screw something up. I have a newly set up computer with 11.4 64 bit. Intel Core i5, under Sound Configuration in YaST I have '5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio'and 'nVidia Corporation'I have built in speakers in my screen, connected via HDMI. I hear no sound from any source, neither via HDMI, nor via a separate sound cable connected to the sound connector on the back of the computer nor via the head phone jack on the front.
I have suse 11.4 installed and I wish to replace the on-board sound chip with an add-on sound card. The following are available at my local shop but they cannot advise whether any will work on Linux Suse 11.4.

Maybe it's just an Amarok2 problem, but whenever another app (for example Konversation) plays a sound file, the audio instantly cuts out (in Amarok2) and will not come back unless I quit Amarok2 and restart it.
Amarok2 has only the options - "HDA ATI SB VT 1708S Analog" or "PulseAudio" (which is NOT installed).

I encountered this on a 10.3 system but there might be similar problem with the 11 series. Having gone through the business of obtaining config info on this card via pnpdump and subsequently using Yast to configure and install it, I encountered a situation whereby the card was fully functional as far as the "Test Sound" option of Yast was concerned. However, after a reboot, it was not loaded and no sound was possible. Debugging the "alsasound" script, I discovered that the directory /proc/asound was not in place at that time and, therefore, sound was not started.
The solution was to add the module name (snd_sbawe) to /etc/sysconfig/kernel to the parameter "MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT". Seems like Yast did not see a reason to do this itself.
I recently installed the x64 rpm of OSS on my Opensuse 11.2 installation (alsa does not have drivers for my lynx card). Sound works beautifully in KDE (login sounds, apps produce sound, etc), EXCEPT for firefox. I can get no sound at all from firefox. I am baffled at why only firefox does not play audio.

The firmware updated fine, but still no sound. The next thing I tried was editing a file based on the advice found at the link below.
