OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.4 / 32b: No Ondemand Governor On Pentium4

Apr 24, 2011

On an asus p4C800, i have a, very old, pentium 4 3.2 GHz (HT, prescott). On which i installed an opensuse 11.4 (after some network quirks and some grub tricks)... First i saw that the p4_clockmod module was not compiled for the kernel. It took me one night to compile the modules, and it borked my whole installation, which i spent my day to remake, but that's another story. After loading all the appropriate modules (speedstep-lib, cpufreq-something, etc...), i run this command :

Slackware :: Using The "powersave" Governor On Battery And "ondemand" Governor On AC Power

Debian Configuration :: Ondemand Governor Stuck At 70% Of CPU's Capacity

Aug 25, 2011

Whenever I unplug my laptop it gets slugishly slow, and I don't understand why. I noticed that when on battery I cannot by any means make the cpu work at its full speed (1.7Ghz) even with the performance governor; it always stays at 1.2Ghz. When unplugged from AC, cpufreq-info also tells me the speed can vary between 600MHz and 1.2Ghz, even though it reports the max hardware speed of 1.7Ghz. Besides, I have tested the laptop on AC power at 1.2GHz and it seems a whole lot faster than when on battery at the same speed. Are there any more "power-friendly" reductions in... say for example, graphics card? It would impact UI redesign significantly (and it sure as hell looks slow). How can I customize (or at least disable) these inconvenient cpu speed reductions?

Ubuntu :: Cpu Frequency Governor Stuck

Feb 4, 2011

I'm using the latest kernel and after I boot up my computer the cpu governor changes from the fastest setting (2ghz) to the slowest setting (800mhz), and gets stuck there. Theres no obvious way to change the setting, the gnome applet to change the cpu frequency doesn't work - I've also tried to change the setting manually through the /sys/ directory but to no avail.

There was a suggestion to fallback on an older kernel, but my older kernels suffer from the same bug.Does anybody have any ideas? I can provide more information on request.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Ondemand Cpu Scaler Broken?

Aug 14, 2011

I'm trying Ubuntu 11.04 for a week now, tbh I'm not really fully satisfied with it: high hard drive temperatures, graphical glitches and often the radeon driver hung up and has to restart itself, not to mention the general X11 window lockups and graphical glitches. But the fact that the ondemand cpu scaler doesn't work good is truly absurd.

I launched an instance of prime95, a famous benchmark and stress tool program, and the ondemand scaler don't care of the fact that the program is using 100% of cpu usage. It just don't switch the processor on the fastest pstate, leaving it at miserable 525 Mhz. If I use the conservative scaler, it correctly put the processor at high frequency when required. For example, the 768Kb FFT benchmark takes at best 76.602ms with ondemand scaler and 32.884ms with the conservative scaler.

Configuration:
HP Notebook Pavilion DV5-1025el
Turion ZM-80 2.1 Ghz
RAM 4GB DDR2 800MHz
HDD WD 250 Gb
Ati Radeon HD3450 256 Mb.

My computer seems to default to performance upon reboot (and yes I have waited the 60 seconds it should take to switch to ondemand). Ubuntu :: Ondemand Vs Performance - Increases The Clock Speed To Performance When The CPU Is Under Load

Jul 31, 2010

I just wanted to know if having my laptop set to ondemand, will this affect performance in any way? I realize it increases the clock speed to performance when the CPU is under load, but does the time it take to go from ondemand to performance affect speed? Will there be any noticeable difference between the two setups? I have a dual core intel at 2.2GHz when in performance. When ondemand is set with no load it downclocks to 800Mhz.

I recently installed opensuse 11.4 on a remote server. It has GNOME installed as a desktop. The problem I am experiencing is that when logged in through VNC, most of the GUI apps are not functioning, especially ones that require root privs. Example: The Add/Create users context does not function. After you supply root pw, nothing happens. If you launch it from a terminal, you see this:

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller On OpenSuse 11.1?

Jan 10, 2009

I am having some problems getting the onboard sound card on my Intel DP45SG motherboard to work properly under openSuse 11.1. Yast appears to have detected the card as a 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller, but I cannot get any sound out of the card at all.

I have tried to follow this thread, and have run the alsa-info script, the results of which are posted here. It appears to me that the codec that is listed in the alsa script, which is the IDT 92HD73E1X5, is not the same as that which is listed on Intel's site for this board, which is the IDT 92HD73E codec. OpenSUSE Install :: Unplug Windows Hard Drive While OpenSUSE Installs?

Jun 14, 2010

I want to dual boot openSUSE 11.2 and Windows 7. I already have Windows 7 installed but I have encountered multiple issues in the past with trying to make dual boots. Usually when I install Linux, GRUB decides it wants to go into world domination mode, and "breaks" my Windows installation. I have reason to believe this is because the distros I use come with legacy GRUB, (v0.97) and for some odd reason it lacks commands such as "update-grub" etc. This means I cannot add Windows 7 to the boot menu without going into extreme complications, which have NEVER, I repeat NEVER succeeded. When I boot the Windows drive directly, I get some error about GRUB not finding the device, and it puts me into a grub rescue command line. Now I am no expert in this field at all, but wouldn't that mean that GRUB wrote itself to the MBR of...oh I don't know, ALL of my hard drives? I really want to install openSUSE 11.2, but from bad experience I am really put off as I know that it ships with legacy GRUB v0.97.I am also running Fedora 13 at the moment, I have quite an experimental dual boot running..been trying to get GRUB 2 for hours now, it is definitely there but no commands work, "upgrade-grub-from-legacy" and "update-grub" return with command not found. I've heard this is just a bug but can anybody confirm that there will definitely be a way for me to "fix" my windows installation after it gets "broken" by GRUB?Second idea, unplug my windows hard drive while openSUSE installs?

OpenSUSE Install :: Option (Installation Regarding To Opensuse And Windows Server 2008?

Mar 20, 2011

right now, my machine runs ubuntu 10.10 due to work issue, i need to use windows server 2008 R2 (its a windows exclusive company) but i never used any of the active directory or anything from the windows server (only experience with windows is visual studio and those GAMES!), so i figure i need to practice a bit on my own b4 starting the job and just at the same time I found out as a univ student i get it for free! And plus, I am finding opensuse a better option for me than ubuntu So im wondering what i should do regarding these 2 systems here s some option

1). Install openSuse 11.4, and install VirtualBox and use windows server 2008 R2 on vbox
2). Install windows server 2008 R2 and then install openSuse alongside with it
3). Install windows server 2008 R2 and install openSuse in virtualBox

I have been using linux as my primary OS for more than a year now and I rlly need it for both school and my own entertainment. So wondering which option would best work out for me

wat are your opinions? PS: my machine is about 2 years ago a Dell laptop, with core 2 duo p8700 (2.53ghz) 4GB ram, and nvidia gfx, which even tho is still fast, but isnt rlly that snappy when it comes to virtualization even running xp in a virtual machine is quite laggy at times :S

OpenSUSE Install :: KDE Too Slow On Start Up. OpenSUSE-WindowsXP Dual Boot?

Jul 18, 2011

I have an 1TB hard drive, half of it for Windows XP SP3, another half for OpenSUSE 11.4. After installing OpenSUSE, it didn't take me much time to notice that there was something wrong with KDE: sometimes it loaded quite fast, as expected, but most of the time I'd have to wait around 1 minute in that loading screen. Then I updated the kernel, as well as KDE itself, but that didn't solve the problem.

After that I tried to start the system using Enlightnment, and it was lightning fast compared to KDE, however, I didn't quite like its interface, and for some reason GNOME refused to start. All that was too frustrating to me, so I gave up and have been using Windows for the last few weeks. Got sick of it now and here I am on OpenSUSE again. Oh, it feels sooo much better! BUT, I'm still with the same problem.

My specs are as follow:
Motherboard: Gigabyte MA78GM-S2H (with updated BIOS, version F11)
Processor: AMD Phenom X3 8450
Memory: 2GB
Videocard: Nvidia Geforce 8500GT (using NVIDIA proprietary drivers)
OpenSUSE 11.4
KDE 4.6.0
Did I forget anything important?

Ps.: I didn't have these problems with Mandriva 2010.2, which, if I'm correct, used the same KDE version.

OpenSUSE Network :: Mounting A Cifs Share As Normal User In OpenSuse 11.4?

Apr 2, 2011

Q: How can I allow my users to mount a cifs share without an entry in fstab in OpenSuse 11.4?

I have an answer myself. Until OpenSuse 11.2 I could mount my samba shares by making mount.cifs and umount.cifs setuid root. Today I installed OpenSuse 11.4. Unfortunately mount.cifs isn't anymore allowed to be setuid due to security concerns. Security is not an issue in my case, so I copied the mount.cifs and umount.cifs from 11.2 to make it work again:

1. Download cifs-mount-3.4.2-1.1.3.1.x86_64.rpm from this repository (I use 64 bit):
2. Extract the files mount.cifs and umount.cifs from the rpm and copy them to /sbin
3. Make them setuid root:

Code:
linux-y5qw:~ # chmod u+s /sbin/mount.cifs
linux-y5qw:~ # chmod u+s /sbin/umount.cifs
4. Mount your cifs shares as a normal user:

Code:
martin@linux-y5qw:~> /sbin/mount.cifs //192.168.2.2/data /home/martin/data/ -ousername=martin
