Ubuntu Networking :: EW-7711UAn Wireless Card Not Finding Any Networks
Aug 12, 2010I've a working internal Intel wifi card but it does not have the greatest of ranges so I bought a Edimax EW-7711UAn.
On the box is says Linux compatible. All knowing Google states that it works out of the box with Ubuntu 10.04.
NetworkManager lists the card at a Ralink 8011.n WLAN (disconnected).
There are no networks listed under this card in NetworkManager or wicd even if I disable the internal wifi using the nm-system-settings.conf.

Dec 30, 2010i have some mkv files that come out pixelated and i don't want to go through the trouble of finding a suitable media player i want to extract the desired audio channel and video channel to combine them into an avi file that will be playable on most media players i already have mkv-toolnix installed but i see nothing that will extract the contents of an mkv or as far as i know i think it's though command line. and how would you combine the audio and video together

Apr 16, 2011I am trying to configure my android phone (rooted Eris running kaossfroyo 2.2) to be used as a midi controller. Which I am having enough trouble with as it is but it has raised an annoying issue that occurred a month ago when I used the phones tethering network with my laptop. After connecting the laptop to the phones network (either tether, or an Ad-hoc network created using the network manager) I am unable to switch to other networks. In other words when I'm done with the phone-laptop connection I cannot connect my laptop to my home network! When I click on the other network connection I can see that it is attempting to connect in the upper right corner of the desktop (the network icon) but it will not make the connection.
What happens is that the network indicator will make the little circle graphic as if it is trying to connect but it never will display the other circle as green indicating that it has connected. but when I disconnect from the home network that is not connecting I will get a message underneath that will say that ad-hoc network disconnected! If I am switching from the android tether it will say Android-Tether disconnected etc. Even though when I click on network manager it shows that I am attempting to connect to the home network (labeled LIBERTY in my case) upon disconnection it shows the ad-hoc or tether connection being disconnected.
I am absolutely baffled by this! The issue persists even after deleting the ad-hoc connection from the wireless settings tab!!! I would speculate that for some reason the laptop is attempting to connect to the previous ad-hoc connection despite me wanting it to connect to LIBERTY. I am very confused and hope someone can lead me in the right direction.
Ubuntu Networking :: No Longer See Any Networks Under "Wireless Networks"?
Jan 7, 2010I could use Wireless network. I could see several different networks in my range. Then suddenly the network stoppedworking, and I can no longer see any networks under "Wireless networks".The Wired networks works fine.I tried upgrading ubuntu, but nothing changed. Just to confirm, I rebooted the computer in Windows Vista (Dual boot) andconfirmed that Wireless worked fine there. No hardware problem then.The suggestions I have found on this and other forums suggest looking at the output from iwconfig and ifconfig. But since I'm a n00b at Ubuntu I don't know what to make of it.

Nov 16, 2010I am trying to download the flash player plugin from the partner repo and it is giving me a forbidden error. Here is my system info. Lucid i386 fully updated with the exception of that package. Internet is a wireless ISP here in iraq for the military. I can download packages from other repos just not anything from the adobe-flashplugin_10.1.102.65-1lucid1 family any contacts for this repo? The internet here is painfully slow so I cannot do much goggling

Jan 4, 2011I read a press release stating that ConVirt 2.0 is now available in the Ubuntu Partner Repository. I am trying to install it on a system with Ubuntu 10.04 but with no luck. The following steps were taken:
1) Uncomment the two partner repository lines in /etc/apt/sources.list
2) run "sudo apt-get update" from the CLI
3) "apt-cache search convirt" (only one listing is shown)
4) "apt-cache show convirt" which displays that the convirt found is from the 1.x branch.
What is going on? Is ConVirt no longer available in the Partner Repository?

Jan 27, 2010Ok, here goes, I have a rdp server sitting at a remote store which is behind a router I do not control.
I might be able to get the phone company to add routing to it but at the moment I'd like to do this with ssh and reverse port routing, because I might need this for other ports later and I never know if the phone company wont break other routings already in place or just screw up the entire thing .
I am able to have a linux box at the site ssh into a server located where I'm at and reverse port forward port 3389 to that server. I can also then ssh into that server from my linux box and port forward 3389 to my box, under another port since my 3389 is already in use. Finally I can use rdesktop to rdp on the my local box which bounces it through the server and back to the linux box which forwards it to the rdp server (A Windows 2008 server to be exact). This is all well and good and works reasonably fast, but, I need to be able to have users on windows boxes at my site do this without all of the rigmarole. I need to, I guess, redirect a normal open port, or create one, on the server where I am so that it connects internally to the reverse forwarded port or open the internal port to the outside. So I guess I need to make it a 'gateway' for that one port, this way all I have to do is point the rdp clients at the main server and port to have it eventually connect to the rdp server in the remote store.
how to go about doing it. I guess I need an iptables entry forwarding the port but I'm not sure what is should be.
The other option is opening up the port 3389 to the outside but I'm not sure how to do that either. Right now I have no iptables entries at all but even if I turn off iptables completely port 3389 is not available if I try to use it from another pc on the network but I can rdp from the server itself using the 3389 port so I know it's working internally.
Networking :: Set Up VPN To Allow Mac / Linux And Windows Clients?
Jul 17, 2010I have a client in Pittsburgh that has a Mac server and a Linux (RHEL) server on a LAN. They have a Netgear FVS 318v3 router on which they had a VPN running. They could do this because they had the router configured for IP-SEC and they only had Mac laptops as clients. I'm told Mac laptops can be configured to connect to IP-SEC VPNs, but Linux (I have Ubuntu) clients cannot.
I'm told that we need an PPTP VPN, and that the Netgear can not act as an endpoint, but can pass PPTP traffic to one of the servers if we set them up as a PPTP server.
We hired two different network consultants to set up the VPN, but neither one is able to set up a VPN to allow both the Mac and Linux laptops to connect.
Why is this so difficult? Lots of companies have VPNs that allow any client to connect.
Would it be better for us to purchase a different router that can act as a PPTP endpoint?
Do I want the router to act as a PPTP endpoint, or would it be better for me to use the Netgear and set up a PPTP service on one of the servers? Or, is there some better solution?
Networking :: Router And Other Clients See Box But No Internet?
Jul 1, 2010I'll state the issue and then give whatever extra details are needed. I'm running Ubuntu 10.xThe Linux box is connected to a router via ethernet. That Linksys router is bridged to an AT&T router.The bridging is working fine. The AT&T router's page shows the IP of the Linux box and lists it as a device. The Linksys page shows no errors with packet transmission and receipt. I can ping the Linux box from any client on the AT&T router, and can ping the AT&T clients from the Linux boxI had set the IP of the Linux box to192.168.1.201 while configuring that router, as I had set that router to 192.168.1.200 and it just seemed orderly.The network preferences show eth0 being set to auto dhcp, but the IP is still set to .201 so I don't know that it actually released or renewed.

Everything works fine when using windows(iexplorer) or RHEL 5.3 clients, as wget, firefox, or direct telnel to por 80 or 389. But we got some linux machines, a CENTOS 5.5 for example, that can�t make it to work. No special configuration, no different vlans or subnets. It just stay waiting for the response:

The Server in the above diagram can be accessed by Client3 and Client4 but not at all by Client1 or Client2. Router0 specifies the Server as a DMZ Host. I would be more specific but this is not my server. I don't use a DMZ, I forward ports when they are needed. In this case I represent ISP1 and the server belongs to a befuddled client. Client1 & Client2 can send packets to each other, no problem. Could the DMZ be breaking communication between the Server and Clients 1 & 2?
Networking :: X Forwarding Works From Some Clients But Not Others
Apr 20, 2010I'm having a problem getting X to forward from one of my machines on my network. There are a bunch of clients running RHEL5 and one server also running RHEL5. When I ssh from any client to any of the other clients using: ssh login@client3.blah.blah.blah -X everything works fine, but if I try to ssh to the server

I get the following error: emacs: Cannot connect to X server localhost:10.0. Check the DISPLAY environment variable or use `-d'. Also use the `xhost' program to verify that it is set to permit connections from your machine. I've also tried from my mac laptop to ssh with -X to both my client machines and the server, with the same problem. Forwarding works fine when I ssh to the clients, but not to the server.
Things I've done/tried: I've checked sshd_config for X11Forwarding yes. I also tried adding the server using xhosts. Turned off all firewalls. It really seems to be a problem with my server since I have the same problem with my mac laptop (on a totally different network).
Ubuntu Networking :: On Server 10.04 - Two Different Nfs Share Display Same Content?
May 14, 2010This server is for dhcp and sharing purposes.I can actually access one nfs share via other ubuntu and osx clients on the network, then I configured another share with different mount point (different drive, different forlder, different contents).The problem is: when I connect form a client to the new one it displays the same exact content of the first share. It seems that is mounting the same share on a different mount point on the client and exporting the shares via the exportfs -ra command doesn't solve nothing.This is my fstab file

Ubuntu Networking :: Parental Control/web Content Filtering?
Jul 29, 2010I work at a cybercafe and i am currently plagued by users who, despite the warning not to, continue to watch porn and use p2p software on my connection. I have done some preliminary research on how to filter the web content as well as to reduce the bandwidth used by p2p software on my network. I found that a solution that has worked for many with regard to web content control is danguardian + squid or privoxy in conjunction with a firewall like firehol or something of the sort. Others use an os like untangle or clear os and install it on a stand alone server. then others use open dns. although i would like the open dns solution, i will need to install a dns client, ddclient and i am a linux newbie so and ddclient requires some compiling or so, and i'm not yet into that. I am also currently not in the mood to dabble into untangle or clear os bcos it will cost me a lot do download the iso's. Internet access is costly over here.
Before i go ahead to implement the steps in any of the tutorials i have seen, i am wondering if such a measure will even help at all.You see, at my cafe, i use my server to share the connection to all my clients. I connect to the internet using a gsm modem. then i have two nic's. nic1 is set to share my connection and my router connects to that nic1. nic2 connects to my router using a static ip to enable communicate with my clients. If i implement something like dansguardian on my server, will it solve the problem for me, that is, do i have to also re-implement the steps i took to configure dansguardian on all the other pc's, that is, my clients?

Currently Sonicwall is running VPN, DHCP, port forwarding etc.. in a range of 10.0.0.0/24 and I have tried to configure Squid Proxy for content filtering (using squid 3 Transparent mode on Fedora 10 and Iptables). Now I need to implement the proxy over my network without changing the SonicWALL current settings (VPN, Port forwarding and DHCP).

Im using VirtualBox to run VMs and want to use NIC2 for the VMs exclusively and I want the VMs on a different network completely from the host.Ive tried setting up NIC2 on the other network but I end up with networking problems on network1. Also I cant figure out how to tell VirtualBox to bind to the host NIC2.

Jun 21, 2009I'm setting up a network for a school. The network has 11 client computers (windows xp) and a server (fedora 10) All I need to do is have a share for all the children to use. (this I did by adding each client to the workgroup specified on samba then I just map the drive). The issue turns out to be that I have over 300 users. The users don't always use the same computer therefore I need the users to be registered on all 11 clients. How can I do this? I have been searching and I've not gotten anywhere. How can I add the computers to a domain instead of a workgroup? What can I use?
