Networking :: Connect Apps Through NAT To Separate Intranet

Nov 29, 2010

I have client workstations on separate intra-net LANs. Both intra-nets use network address translation (NAT) or masquerading on the LAN. The private network IP address should not matter (unless it does). When LAN-1 connects with an exterior web site, it will leave a record of the ISP public IP address. A LAN-2 connection could read this record, but how would it know how to reach into LAN-1? How can a network application running on a LAN-1 workstation find and connect with a network application running on a LAN-2 workstation? There is a utility called "woof" where one workstation presents a limited feature web browser for access by other hosts on the same LAN.

Networking :: Connect Separate Home Networks?

I have my main network with internet and DHCP which is on 192.168.x.x with a router. Now I have set up an Ubuntu file server and i want it on a separate home network with static ip addresses range of 10.x.x.x. and it is also connected torouter. So i will have two networks, one private static with no direct internet access, and the other with internet and DHCP. I want to know how I would "bridge" these two networks so that I could access my file server from the DHCP network. How is this typically done?

Ubuntu Networking :: Mount Samba Share - Connect - Read And Write From Other Apps

Mar 9, 2010

I have a networked raid drive. Thecus 2100. Its running linux, and includes samba sharing. On that I have a folder shared. I can connect to and read and write from nautilus. No problems. However, I can't use other apps through that method. Its not really "mounting" that drive in the sense you'd normally think of (afaik).

If I try to mount the folder, no matter how I have tried so far (-t cifs, smbmount, etc), I can navigate the folders, but if I try to read any file I get a permission error. Looking at the permissions with 'ls -l', everything looks OK. The weird thing is, I can write a file, then read that file back as long as its the same session.

Just now I tried 'smbclient' with no special arguments. Just the server and path url. It asked for my password. Once I was in, I had no trouble getting files. I had a thread about this a while back and there were several links and all sorts of command line options to try, which I did, with no different outcome. I think its got to be something much simpler and more obvious. smbclient and nautilus seem to have no trouble. Anybody know what they're doing differently?

Ubuntu Servers :: Intranet - Insure That No One From The "outside" Will Ever Be Able To Connect

Feb 2, 2010

I want to set up what I assume is called an intranet server. Initially it'll just serve html web pages to users on my local Ethernet. BTW, right now users get their ip addresses from a router - 192.168.xxx.xxx - "private" IP's. This router is then connected to a modem which then connects to the internet, so there's the usual ip masquerade... I assume I'll install Ubuntu server on a dedicated PC connected to the local Ethernet.

My question is I want to insure that no one from the "outside" will ever be able to connect to the server, it's only for locals. Also locals should be able to connect to the internet and also should be able to connect to this local server if they want. What is the simplest way to implement? Are my simple assumptions correct?

Ubuntu Networking :: Setting Up An Intranet In 10.04?

Jul 7, 2010

I want to do is make an old computer of mine that I use for web development be accessible to anyone within my LAN only.

so in a nutshell i don't want the world wide web to be able to access this server since I use it for development work only and i do most of my actual development work on another system since most of the applications i use requires windows.

I know you can block incoming traffic to all IPs or add individual IPs to allow in, but how can i make the firewall only accept incoming traffic from those within my LAN network?

if you wish to know what I'm using to configure my firewall, I'm using firestarter on this server

Networking :: How To Configure Intranet PC As Gateway

May 1, 2009

I am using Fedora 10. I have a network design like that:

WinServer --- (r1)router(r0) --- (eth1)LinuxPC(eth0) --- intranetPC
All netmask is 255.255.255.0
WinServer network is 192.168.1.0/24
intranetPC network is 10.10.0.0/24, gateway is IP of the LinuxPC(eth0): 10.10.0.2

Router:
r1 -IP: 192.168.1.253
r2 -IP: 10.10.0.253

LinuxPC
eth0 -IP: 10.10.0.2
eth1
-IP: 10.10.0.40
-GW: 10.10.0.253

I search in Internet several days to find how to configure the LinuxPC to a gateway. The LinuxPC can ping and connect the WinServer and intranetPC correctly, but the intranetPC cannot ping and connect the WinServer network.

I used the webmin to configure the Gateway.
I used the iptables to set allow all connect, than
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -eth1 -j MASQUERADE
iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -j ACCEPT
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
In "/etc/sysconfig/network" add "FORWARD_IPV4=true"

Networking :: See Intranet Site From Behind Gateway?

Jul 28, 2010

There are a lot of boxes in this network and we have intranet site. If I connect computer directly to the network with everything set to automatic. I can see this intranet site. But I've installed a switch. One box has two net adapters and it takes internet, intranet and all from one adapter, the other adapter is connected to switch. Now, I have connected to this switch two computers. Internet is working fine. But I cannot get to this intranet site from these boxes. I can get into shares of other computers in the network but they cannot see me. Everything is hidden behind the gateway. But that's not the problem for me. All I want is to get to this intranet website. How can I do it?.

Fedora Networking :: F13 - Resolve Names On Intranet?

Jun 16, 2010

I have a windows PC and a fedora 13 linux box. When connecting to the linux from windows, I'd like to type the hostname instead of the ip address. Apart from setting the hostname, what do I have to do to publish my hostname on the intranet. (set up a nameserver?)

Though hostname works on the linux box, even this fails: nslookup myhostname Also I'm a newbie. I've tried installing some packages like samba and dhcp, using yum...;service chkconfig... and then checking whether nslookup or nmblookup work with my hostname. But it's just guesswork. Under system -> Administration there is no network option. but it is not clear what package is needed to install it, or whether such a thing is supported in fedora 13. I did try system-config-network, but it has few options none of which pertain to hostname resolution. The fedora manuals dont seem to cover it, at least in recognizable plainspeak to me.

Networking :: Build A Network From Scratch That Includes File And Printer Sharing, Intranet?

Can anyone suggest a book or online tutorial that I can learn from? Now let me be clear: I am finding no shortage of tutorials on the web. However, too many are old or incomplete.

A little extra info: I am a teacher/network admin for a small private school with about 50 student computers (that I wish to become Linux machines in the future) and about 10 staff computers (mostly Windows laptops--I do not expect the staff to convert to Linux as readily), I currently do not have an intranet implemented.

Ubuntu :: Control What Apps Can And Cannot Connect To Internet?

Jul 2, 2011

Using lsof I noticed that everytime I open some apps (like Rhythmbox or Banshee) it connects to the internet over ports 80 and 443. All I'm doing though is surveying my music collection. Why is it connecting to the internet for this? I don't have podcasts or album covers or any of that stuff set. In fact I turned all that stuff off.

the problem is that I only get so much bandwidth on my mobile broadband plan. I don't want apps connecting when I don't need them to. I played around with the UFW but it appears to only allow port configuration. I can't see how to control the connections of applications. I can't block ports 80 and 443 because then I'd shut down the web browser. How do Linux users control the internet connections of installed applications?

Ubuntu Networking :: Creating A Ubuntu-based Intranet With Internet Access?

Jan 20, 2011

I am trying to create an intranet that will serve about 100 clients. If it is possible, I would like it to be set that anyone on the intranet would be able to type helpdeskin their browser bar and be taken to the intranet site. I have Webmin and there are just too many options to figure out how to do this. They may as well have written it in Chinese. File server? Email? Impossible.

I can get to the intranet locally by typing in the local IP, but no one wants to remember numbers.

Then, I need to get that intranet accessible via the internet. A domain name has already been purchased and our cable company has assigned us 5 static IPs. The issue here is getting the IP to link up with the server. The intranet has to be configured in such a way that it can be administered remotely. Again, with Webmin, I am clueless. I was going to try to use ISPConfig, but seeing as how you have to pay for the install directions

Ubuntu Networking :: Share Files Across Separate LANS Using 2 Routers

Dec 22, 2010

I have 2 routers, each are assigning IP with DHCP on. One router is plugged into cable modem second router is downstairs plugged into first router. Wire runs in WAN of second router. Each router has its own IP subset. First router assigns IP's to 192.168.1.xxx second router IP's to 10.0.0.xxx

I know I can use the second router as an AP with DHCP OFF. BIG BUT though is my wifi verizon phone got no IP assigned when running like that and wirelessly connecting to the second router. Laptops were just fine. SO, I reconfigured second router with its own subset IP being handed out. Now verizon phone is perfect.

How can I share files between connected PC's using it this way?

Ubuntu Networking :: VNC And Dual Head Setup (separate X Screens)?

Jan 2, 2011

I have my computer set up to use separate x screens for both of my monitors and almost everything works perfectly. With this set up I don't have any problem displaying flash in full screen on either monitor like I had with twinview. I have it set up this way so that I can use my TV to display mythtv and still use my computer monitor to browse the web, etc. The only problem is that I use my iphone with hipporemote to give me a wireless keyboard/mouse. When using twinview this was not a problem as it was just one large desktop spread over two monitors.

However, switching to separate x screens seems to have broken the functionality of the vnc server. When using my physical keyboard and mouse I can just move the cursor off the side of monitor 1 to control monitor 2, however, if I'm connected via vnc the cursor gets "trapped" inside the active monitor. I can interact with each screen as expected but if I want to switch the mouse/keyboard focus to the other monitor I have to go to the computer and move the mouse to the desired monitor, which obviously defeats the purpose of using the iphone as a wireless remote.

So my question is this. Is there a way to assign a hotkey combination to switch the focus of keyboard and mouse that the vnc server is controlling? Or could I set the vnc server to only control one of the two x screens?

Ubuntu Networking :: Assign An IPv6 Address To Separate Users?

Apr 15, 2011

I have an Ubuntu 10.04 server/router with IPv6 internet connectivity (I have an internet routable /64 subnet). Since I have this abundance of IPv6 addresses I wanted to try and assign v6 addresses to specific users on the local system. I've been looking at ip6tables with packet mangling but I don't seem to be able to find out how to do this or if this is even possible.

Current configuration: eth0: Local network, has the /64 IPv6 public range active and the IPv4 LAN range. tun0: 6in4 tunnel with a ISP assigned public v6 address. eth1: Standard IPv4 internet connection.

All users on my system use the v6 address configured on tun0. I want to force them to use the /64 range which is configured on eth0. If I can force users to use a specific v6 address, I'll configure more then one v6 address on this interface based on the users userID on the system.

Networking :: Configuring Multiple Separate LANs In Same Physical Network

Jun 27, 2010

For some simulation, I am trying to configure a setup of 3 ubuntu desktops (one of them with multiple network cards) to behave in the following way:

Each one of them should be a separate network not seeing the others (including multicast addresses) They need to have internet access through the machine with multiple network cards. So from the point of view of each machine they define a LAN in which it is the only device and have internet access through the gateway machine.

What do I need to do to configure these machines for the above setup?

CentOS 5 Networking :: Routing 2 Internal Nets Through Separate NICs To Internet?

Nov 9, 2009

I have configured CentOS 5.4 as a router/firewall (iptables) as such, and it is working fine:

eth0 - Public IP/Intenet, DHCP
eth1 - 192.168.0.0 internal "net1"
eth2 -10.0.0.0 internal "net2"

I want to add a fourth NIC, eth3, which will be assigned its own Public IP/Internet address (thru DHCP; my ISP provides two). The purpose it to route all net1's internet-bound traffic through eth0, and all of net2's internet traffic to eth3. This allows me to use one router/firewall machine instead of two separate ones. I anticipate that without some specific routing instructions, the default route will be eth0 for all net1 and net2 internet traffic (eth3 will be ignored).

I thought of using just one NIC (eth0) but create an alias (eth0:0), but IPtables (and possible DHCP) can't differentiate between the two (besides, nics are inexpensive). Is there a way to do this through routing commands, or even use iptables prerouting/forward functions (or is using iptables problematic)?

A MySQL or similar database is preferred, but flat file is okay as long as it does not limit content/structure too much.We would probably have about 15 to 20 content authors/editors. No workflow, authentication (except authors/editors) or secure content areas are required.

The only limitation would be that the content could only be accessed from a particular range of IPs. (I assume that would be set in Apache.)

Fedora :: Cannot Login Into Corporate (intranet) Portal

Oct 15, 2009

I can not open the corporate intranet portal, runnnig on windows server 2008 with domain users. In Centos I could login just fine - firefox/konqueror just prompted me for my NTLM windows domain username and password - I typed those in and browers sucessfully loggem me in and I could surf the corporate portal. Note that NTLM authentication is configured as a fallback from kerberos authentication (so told me our portal admin)

However, in Fedora11 when I try to open the corporate (intra(not inter)net) portal, browsers just give me "Bad Request (Invalid Hostname)" error instead of prompting me for my domain username/password. I'm logged in on my F11 box as a local (not domain) user - as I did also previously on Centos Box.

I disabled SELinux, I disabled the firewall but still no luck. Not being able to open the corporate portal is a major showstopper for me, as I can not access many applications hosted there.
