I notice that on DistroWatch, the descriptions include "debian based", "arch based", etc. For the newbie, is there any practical difference between the different bases, or is it a Coke vs Pepsi type question?
Is a distro based on Debian say, easier for a newbie to learn or work with than say one that is FreeBSD based?
I've got some source code that loads and plays WAV files through the OSS drivers (and USB audio). The code works even under 2.6.34. Is there any benefit to rewriting the code using the ALSA system?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am working on a set up, and I like to be able to toggle compiz on and off, or toggle dualscreen on and off. The thing is, I also have conky on my desktop as well as a terminal window embedded in my desktop (that requires compiz). So, when I turn comiz off, or resize my desktop, I want to be able to reposition conky/embedded-terminal and the terminals position is relative to my conky position and the size of my virtual desktop.
I can do this all fine, except that to reposition the terminal I need to kill it then reopen it. But if I kill gnome-terminal it kills ALL gnome-terminals instead of just my embedded one. How can I specifically close my embedded one and leave any others untouched? Lets say that the title of my embedded terminal is "trans777"Also, the trans777 titled gnome-terminal will be killed when compiz is not running.
When you use an IDE and it asks you if you want frame based or dialog based, what is the difference?

Does anyone else have a resource monitor appearing on their KDE desktop? My is in the upper-right corner, and lies on top of all other windows. I can work with windows beneath it alright, but it is always showing.
The resource monitor is always translucent, and appears to have some sort of vertical "thermometer"-style usage scale on its left side. Beside that are two scrolling graphs. The only text/label appears to be a percentage that matches the thermometer bar, but there is nothing to tell me what resources are being monitored. Regardless, I use other resource monitoring software and I do not want this one on my desktop.
i want to leaning from smple basic ,how and where to choose will be better ! who can refer to ?

Both dev/sda and /dev/sdb were drives that used to be part of a sil hardware raid on a previous machine. I would like to use them as a new mdadm raid on this new machine the old hardware card was really quite slow. the drives are now pluged into the MB and should be much faster there.
fdisk -l shows this
It produces no errors but does not remove it.
I'm working a program to implement a simple multi-process browser. The browser works by having a ROUTER process as the parent of everything else in the program. There's another process called the CONTROLLER which is part of where the user can input information. To tell the ROUTER to make a new tab in the browser the user activates a function from the CONTROLLER to send the create new tab information to the ROUTER:
Code:
void new_tab_created_cb(GtkButton *button, gpointer data)

Got a few more questions from the Debian Security Howto.

Do I have to uncomment these lines for them to take effect?

I am dual-booting my Gateway laptop with Windows XP Media center Ed. and Ubuntu Notebook 10.10. Several weeks ago I was in the midst of downloading a program from the software center and my system starts running slow (this is in the Ubuntu kernel, not the Windows OS). So I decided to cold-boot the laptop in mid-download. When it boots back up, I get dropped to a grub-rescue menu that states the following:
Code:
Now, the only way I can even remotely use my laptop at the moment is to use my Live USB with the corresponding version of Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 or the Live CD I made with Ubuntu 10.04 on it (I'll explain why I made this below).
I read somewhere that I need to run fsck on my device to try to fix the partition, which btw my Ubuntu partition on my device is /dev/sda5, and before someone suggests it, I even tried using GParted and it doesn't work.
The reason I made a 10.04 CD is because I read somewhere that using the fsck from 10.04 might be more effective (for whatever reason) than the 10.10 fsck version.
I'd also like to add that I'm incapable of booting onto my Windows OS at all, yet I can access the partition from my Live CD/USB. the Ubuntu partition however, I can neither access or mount.
I tried running fsck on the entire device partition table, and I get the following:
Code:
This is me running fsck from the 10.04 version, I get a similar msg from the 10.10 Live USB but replace fsck.ext2 with fsck.ext4 in the message.
Is there a way for wget not to download a file but rather just access it? I use it to access a URL that triggers a process on a web server, but the actual HTML file at that location doesn't need to be downloaded and saved. I couldn't find anything in wget's help to show if there's a way to do this. Could anyone suggest a way of doing this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed a while ago two CentOS 5.3 servers. One of them was running Samba and another OpenLDAP. I configured Samba to act as a PDC on the network and everything was working fine. I was already on policies configuration and desktop migrations.
The following problems are Samba server problem, LDAP server is on hold until I figure out the first problem.
Software conf:
Hardware conf:
One day, both servers began crashing, and after a while, it showed the following during the boot on Samba:
After that, ALL CentOS installations had this problem after yum update, epel installation and some smb.conf modifications:
I figured out it might be EPEL (i did installed yum-priorities and tryied updating the base sistem BEFORE epel installations), so I installed the system without EPEL yum repository. After some good and relieving 15 min working, the system crashed AGAIN after yum base update and showed the following on boot time:
And it stops right there.
Maybe some wrong kernel update? the first time it crashed in one way, with running updated system (After the first update, no manual update was done). The sequel problems were all after Kernel update and EPEL. The last one was just after Kernel update. I'll try one last time with NO updates, but i can't run the system like that.
I can't do anything that might one day crash, it's a 6000-7000 user gov environment, but i don't want to install another distro, so if I don't figure it out, they will order me to.
I can not watch a DVD video using Movie Player. It gives the message: An Error Ocurred Can not read from resource. What does it want me to do ? Buy a new DVD player ? I have no trouble with this drive in another distribution on the same computer, or playing audio CDs in this very Debian OS. So I don't think there is anything wrong with the DVD drive. VLC won't do anything either.

Has anyone had this issue? Tonight, when I started KMail I got a crash of the Akonadi maildir resource agent. Everything was fine in the morning, I didn't change anything or mess about, just a normal session. The crash report will go away if I close it 5 times or so. I have seen the problem in a couple of fora, apparently the best workaround is to rename the relevant file in /usr/bin (the file named akonadi_maildir_resource). Kmail is now functioning properly (I gather it is not yet fully integrated with Akonadi, so it shouldn't matter too much). I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem, and any solutions you might have.
I tried submitting a bug report via the automated process; unfortunately, when I tried downloading the debug tools I got stuck on an error in downloading the repo data from the update repository:
PackageKit Error repo-not-available: Failed to download ./repodata/cefcc9d56264aa169f70a53c560ffc39cb6af575-deltainfo.xml.gz from Index of /update/11.3
I assume the repo update issue is a temporary mistake in the update process? Send me any thoughts on the akonadi issue, please!
