Hardware :: Old-styled Mouse Not Recognized By The GUI

Apr 2, 2010

GNU/Linux kernel 2.6
Slackware 12.0
KDE 3.5.7

In my machine and in its rear panel there is a DB9 male connector, it being the only DB9 connector anywhere in the machine. My mouse is pluged into that connector (old-styled mouse; newer mice end in a mini din conector (PS/2 mice)).

Up to here the conditions. The problem is when I boot certain non-linux operating systems on this machine the o.s. is aware of the mouse but, if linux is the o.s. running, it is the same as if the mouse does not
exist (assuming I am in the GUI). What can probably be the cause?

Maybe the configuration file for the X server is where I should look at. I regret not being able to specify who is the graphics server (something like XFree86?).

Ubuntu :: Mouse And Keyboard Not Recognized On Startup?

Dec 4, 2010

Sometimes when I reboot, I go to log on only to find that the mouse won't move and the keyboard does nothing. Well, the mouse moves, it's not glued to the desk or anything. But it doesn't move the cursor. The first few times this happened, I found that it was a music player or other USB device plugged in that somehow created confusion or something. So if I unplugged them and booted up again, everything was fine. And by booting up again, I mean I have to hold down the power button and forcibly shut the thing off, since I obviously can't do it the nice way with no mouse or keyboard.

Anyway, it's been doing it now more often, even with nothing plugged into the front USB ports. But I have found that if I disconnect my external hard drive, it boots up fine again. But that's obnoxious, because that hard drive is online as much as the computer itself, because it's my main repository for files. So I have to unplug the USB from the back of it, hold the cable so it doesn't fall behind the desk, turn on the computer, and then log in one-handed while I hold the cable (because if I just plug it back in before the desktop shows, it doesn't mount properly).

And I know it's an Ubuntu thing rather than a general computer thing because the bios options work just fine. In fact, the little NumLock light is on until the moment that Ubuntu starts up and shows the login dialog.

General :: Bluetooth Mouse Connects But Not Recognized

Feb 19, 2011

I'm running Debian squeeze on a Fujitsu Lifebook AH550 under kernel revision 2.6.37. For the most part, everything is good, but I can't get my Verbatim Bluetooth mouse (model 96991) to work. It's fine with the Debian 2.6.32 kernel, so I know that the hardware is recognized and any required configuration files are in place. I've evidently missed some kernel configuration parameter, unless perhaps some driver has changed since 2.6.32 which renders my mouse incompatible. If I run bluetooth-properties, I can see that a mouse is configured. I've tried removing that device and adding a new device. The mouse is found immediately, and, according to the dialog, is configured successfully.

Debian Installation :: Mouse Not Recognized After Lenny To Squeeze Upgrade

Feb 17, 2011

my mouse wouldn't work in any fashion after going through most of the install process from Debian Lenny to Squeeze (couldn't click, move the mouse, etc. under both Compiz and Metacity). My system is a Lenovo ThinkPad T61 laptop; I keep the touchpad disabled, but the button mouse (TrackPoint) wouldn't work either. I was following the instructions here:

[URL]

So, the first thing I did was run the following commands, as it says to do:

# apt-get upgrade
# apt-get install linux-image-2.6-686
# apt-get install udev

Then, I rebooted my machine into the new kernel (2.6.32-5-686). I got a ton of udev warning messages at startup (all along the lines of "SYSFS{}= will be removed in a future udev version, please use ATTR{}= to match the event device, or ATTRS{}= to match a parent device, in something-or-other" - details can be provided if needed), but got a functioning prompt. I logged in, ran startx, and everything worked except the mouse, which couldn't do anything - as if it wasn't recognized at all. Switching window managers from Compiz to Metacity, as mentioned before, didn't help. "modprobe psmouse" revealed that that module was correctly loaded.

Rebooting into my old backported kernel (2.6.32-bpo.3-686) restored mouse function, although I still had the udev warning messages (so maybe those aren't relevant, I don't know). Apparently, something about the different kernels is causing the problem, but I'm not sure what - any thoughts? I haven't wanted to complete the upgrade with "apt-get dist-upgrade" without knowing that I'll have a working mouse, since I need a functional GUI at the moment and don't have a good way of fixing it if I trash it.

Fedora Hardware :: Asus A53S Elantech Touchpad Recognized As PS/2 Logitech Wheel Mouse

Aug 23, 2011

i cant get this right for some reason. i switched from ubuntu to fedora. in ubuntu i had the same issue with the touchpad, but there i found a fix which worked with ubuntu, but not with fedora.[URL]... the problem in fedora is that i dont have any psmouse.ko module in /lib/modules/2.6.39.4/kernel/drivers/input/mouse so the patch cant really be applied so i get an error, saying there is no psmouse

i found a fix, but since my knowledge with linux is limited i didnt get it right. "I spent some time trying to get this working (and one will find other threads here, on the Fedora list, etc, where I was trying to get help), but the problem, in the end, is that Fedora doesn't install the PS/2 mouse driver as a module, but builds it into the kernel. So the solution was to recompile the kernel using the changed files from System 76's repo.

This is not nearly as difficult as it sounds. The process described in the Fedora docs, under Building a Custom Kernel, is easy enough to follow. In my case, it was even easier. I unpacked the kernel source by following the steps down through "Prepare the Kernel Source Tree" and then copied the source for the new "module" into drivers/input/mouse, replacing just the elantech.h and elantech.c files. I don't really care about getting an RPM, so I just built the kernel"[URL]..

Debian Hardware :: HDD Not Recognized In BIOS But Recognized Upon Boot

Sep 18, 2014

I have a backup HDD with a different distro for my laptop and i can boot into it via external usb or if swapped into the laptop. This HDD/install in question is debian testing and was working fine, the issue arose suddenly. I was first suspecting a failure of hardware somewhere on the motherboard, but the hdd i was using with an external usb adapter also works when installed into the machine. also, the HDD is recognized once i have booted using the external HDD and distro, but it is not recognized by the bios. so i dunno, my first guess is something became corrupt within the testing install, but i guess its also possible that there is some wrong with the HDD but thats not immediately apparent as all the data is still accessible.

Should also note that the HDD with testing on it is also recognized when connected via the external usb adapter, while booted from alternative distro/HDD.

Also. just tried this, but i can get the testing HDD/disto to boot if connected externally. it was going pretty quick, but there i did catch a line about a corrupt filesystem. any commands to run to see what might be going on?? log files to look at?
