View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an archive directory that needs to be cleaned up once per quarter. The top level (/data/archive/*) directory names change daily, as well as the subdirectories and the filenames (the application names everything according to date). Also, there are two top level directories, bin and incoming, that we can't touch. I want to write a shell script that loops through the 15 or 20 top level directories and deletes all files and subdirectories older than 3 days (skipping the bin and incoming folders). Can someone get me started on a script? I am kinda new to shell scripting.

Lets say I have 20 files named FOOXX, where XX is the number of the file, eg 01, 02 etc. At the moment, if I want to delete all files lower than the number 10, this is easy and I just use a wildcard, eg rm FOO0* However, if I want to delete specific files ina range, eg 13-15, this becomes more difficult. rm FPP[13-15] does not work, and asks me if I wish to delete all files. Likewse rm FOO1[3-5] wishes to delete all files that begin with FOO1 So, what is the best way to delete ranges of files like this? I have tried with both bash and zsh, and I don't think they differ so much for such a basic task?

Reading a BASH script, I saw a find command preceded with a backslash. It was similar to this:
Code:
`find . -type f -name '*.xml' -print > xmlfilelist`
It's impossible to find documentation about this in man pages or on the internet, since 'backslash' are always evoked along with special characters. I also noticed that even though the command was surrounded with backquotes, the result was not affected to any variable. Maybe the backslash's presence is related with this?
