General :: Starting With Ubuntu 10.04 Lts Version?
Jan 19, 2011
I just upgrade my latest version started problems with the system to running the initial load, sometimes the process is killed and I have to shutdown cutting of the power and start over again for two or three times in order to run properly. Sometimes the screen is frozen suddenly or closing application shutdown by itself. Someone have the same problem? and if someone know how to solve the problem please let me Know.
I'm looking if it is possible to change the whole Linux install without having to boot up using a live-cd. The purpose is to remotely log on to a machine using SSH or other to replace the complete installation, without loosing network setup so I don't loose contact with it. Perhaps loading the live-cd while linux is already running?
Which LXDE version of Linux has the newest version of Firefox and Open Office included?
I am looking for an iso file, and I am trying to run this off of a live CD for now. So I want a light version of Linux, probably LXDE, or if not, then probably XFCE. But I need a new version of Firefox and OpenOffice included.
Because, I tried burning the customizable NimbleX @ custom.nimblex.net . Pretty good, except it uses Firefox 2, and Open Office 2.3, which are outdated.
And I tried Mint XFCE, which might have been pretty good too, but it had some issue of blanking and requiring relogin after I opened hotmail frequently (user id: mint, password: blank).
The web browser and the word processing program are the most important and essential applications to me.
So are there any Linux versions in LXDE on LiveCD that include newer versions of Firefox (or at least another good browser) and Open Office (oo seems better than abi)? (Again, if no LXDE, perhaps XFCE?)
I just want to download a good version in an iso file, and burn it to a CD and get to work. Like I said the web browser and the word processing program are all important.
So really, what iso/LiveCD versions are the fastest for running on an older system, and yet have the newest browser and word processor included?
When I compile my application, I received following error: ERROR: Source object libxml2.so has EABI version 0, but target turbine has EABI version 4. So I need a libxml2 file with ARM EABI version 4. Can I find one from the internet? or does anyone know how to create one?
I installed OS11.4 on my old laptop, Compaq Armada E500., 512MB RAM, ATI Rage Mobility. During installation I chose "minimal server" and added some development packages, lxde and a little more. I chose to start in runlevel 3 which is full networking without X. Still, when computer is booted it tries to start Xorg which doesn't work because of some problem w driver. The start-up seems to stop there, it never loads completely - seems most things in runlevel 3 are not started (see below) I can manually login on laptop and fix it - but never permanently, same thing again after reboot.
I have checked /etc/inittab & yast - both states default runlevel is 3. I have checked services to be started both directly, browsing directory /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/, and with YaST, it is very clear X should not load during boot. But, as said, it does.. I don't really care about the driver problem right now, I can fix that later when I have more time. So how do I stop X from getting started automatically?
More info, if needed: The installation also stopped with message on tty1 "Starting YaST2" and tty8 showing errors with graphics driver (mach64). The system seemed to be installed though, so I simply rebooted (issuing "reboot" from tty2).

I'm not completely sure where it stops, network is configured but keyboard is wrong and mysql & everything after is not started, so somewhere between S02network and S06kbd. I'm going to use it as a server for testing purposes so no X is actually needed - however I do want to have X & lxde installed just in case, my Internet connection at home is terribly slow so I need most things I might need in the future installed today.
I have installed tomcat6 on Ubuntu. It starts it automatically at the startup. I do not want it to start automatically, I want to start it manually because I use same 8080 port for different servers. If tomcat is already started on 8080, it becomes problem.
How do I stop Ubuntu from not starting tomcat automatically at startup.
How do I execute xinit on a remote computer through ssh (preferrably)? ssh -X is NOT an option. I'm not looking for running a remote program on localhost. I want to run a program on the server displaying on the server's display. I can do that if X is running. But if for some reason I need to stop X, I can't restart it from the localhost and the program won't run. If I run xinit as root (through sudo) through ssh I get:
X: user not authorized to run the X server, aborting. giving up.
The user can do this if I run it directly on the server.
I have a home computer that I bought to try Linux. first I want to reformat the HD so it is completely empty, it has xp now, then start from scratch. But I have not been able to format the HD. I have used all the tricks I know.
I down loaded the 5.9 lite live version of vector it seems to start fine but I get a msg when starting to this effect going to runlevel 2 you don't have a window manager (kde ,gnome etc etc). Ive tried to find information on several sites including vectors & havn't found any thing. I did get a list of commands off of the disk but none of the combinations. is there a way to get say kde to come up when starting the live cd?
I need to run a bash script BEFORE connecting to a vpn (which I do by clicking the network manager applet).
I need this script because when connecting to the vpn the routes are incorrect. The script needs to run before connecting to the vpn because I need to use the command "host" to set new routes and if the vpn has already started I cant access internet.
I would also need to run another script when the vpn disconnect so I can roll everything back to normal.
I have synergyc process that starts at boot. How do I prevent this process from starting? I've searched /etc, /etc/init.d for some configs or scripts but found nothing.
I 'installed' Fedora12 nine days ago. Everything went smoothly until I booted-up today when I got a message in the top right corner of the desktop saying "WARNING, A CRASH PACKAGE NAUTILUS - 2.28.1 - 2 FC12 HAS BEEN DETECTED."All my icons have disappeared from the desktop. In the tool bar I have a continuous row of moving identical icons for "Starting File Manager".
I want to start a service and a script SiteMonitor.sh at startup.
Here is brief working of SiteMonitor.sh(This script monitors the ip addresses of machines which are using http service of the host. This script checks this after every 5 seconds therefore i have run it at background.)
To start with i have modified /etc/rc.local file.
Here is the content of my /etc/rc.local file.
Code: #!/bin/sh # # This script will be executed *after* all the other init scripts. # You can put your own initialization stuff in here if you don't # want to do the full Sys V style init stuff.
I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on my pc with XBMC installed. It's set to boot into xbmc on start up and works fine. I also have squeezebox server (a music server for my network) installed and again don't have any trouble. I'd now like to get squeezeslave running, a client for squeezebox server so I added the following lines to /etc/init.d/local:
Starting from what I would think is completely from scratch, maybe worse. A friend set up this computer on unix/linux when I expressed interest. Truthfully I don't have even the slightest clue where to start other than to offer my complete humility. If I could start with getting my dvd and cd functions to work that would be a good start.
I just converted my physical Suse 11 desktop to a virtural machine on an ESX 4.0 server. The machine boots, but there is no GUI interface, as there is one on the physical machine. How do I start GUI from the command line interface?
OK, I have been a lifelong windows programmer and user. I started using the Linux OS as my primary desktop OS a few months ago. I decided it would be a good time to focus on programming more for linux than windows.I have downloaded the source code of the Linux kernel. and to avoid me waisting time figuring this out on my own I would like someone to answer me this question.
what is the starting point of the kernel, which file(usually a main.c file)contains the very first line of code executed when the boot-loader starts Linux.
Installed Zend Server CE on 10.04 - install mostly fine. But phpmyadmin shows this error; "Your PHP MySQL library version 5.0.83 differs from your MySQL server version 5.1.41" I have followed the Zend online docs and used a DEB install. Why would these versions be different?how do I fix it so that the two are in sync?

This is not my desktop computer but my remote server.
Just got my AW M11x and I am following a thread on installation issues and work around. My question is should I install the desktop version or the Netbook version? Not sure the best location to post, if incorrect please move accordingly Wanting to run gimp, open office, wine to access MS office (use for school) and possibly install photoshop for raw work gimp cant handle.
I was reading about Linux and found out that you can apparently custom build your own operating system.
The thing is, it all sounds great for what I would like to do but my knowledge in that area is zero, or sub-zero.
My question is: is there an operating system out there, that will start up the computer, then have a browser installed on it - lets say Firefox - with a homepage www.example.com?... (no start button or taskbar)
Maybe no toolbars or anything else except the webpage itself.
Also the hardware should be plug and play, such as printers, mobiles scanners or any usb driven devices.
