Aug 19, 2010I am new both here and in Linux. As the subject says, I would like to learn how to copy a directory (not a file) from terminal with progress bar showing. The copy is local, i.e., not to another computer. My distro is CentOS 5.5. I know that if I do it with nautilus I would see the progress, but I want to learn how to do it from the terminal. I know that PV command can show a progress bar, but from what I saw, it works well for files, but not for directories (recursive).
Is it possible to use PV for directories? If yes, could you please show me the syntax? I also saw that some people mentioned that rsync can also show a progress bar, I tried to do it, but it didn't work out - perhaps I got the syntax wrong. If rsync can really be used to copy directories with progress bar, show me the syntax? Any other ideas on how to do it? I would like ideas that do not involve using any script, i.e., just something that I can do using the regular commands.

Jun 8, 2010I would like to keep track of not only what bash commands I used and when, but also where they were issued from, i.e. what was the current working directory when I issued "foobar" on a particular day and time. Can we ask bash history to keep track of working directories too? I have tried to get an idea of this reading the enormous "man bash", but I don't seem to have an answer yet either way.

I assumed it would simply be an environment variable, but all attempts i've made to change directory by resetting variables shown by env have failed.Is this something that is maintained internally in the command prompt (bash in my case)?The background to this is I'm setting up a script to remotely run commands over ssh. Since separate commands will unfortunately require separate SSH connections, I need to maintain (save and reload) items such as environment variables and current working directory from one call of the script to the next.

I tried telling yum to install all the packages at the same time, though, the dependencies still fail to resolve (though they are all in the directory). I don't know if it would be safe to force install without the dependencies (even though I would install them later).

Well, I am facing problem when doing lab questions.
I must use DLXLinux bundled in Bochs (bochs.sourceforge.net).
I am required to use the /usr/local directory.
In /usr directory, there is no directory named 'local' but there is one thing called 'local@'. So, when I try to use mkdir command to create 'local' directory in /usr , there are error "cannot make directory.....".

Mar 23, 2011I have several directories of subtitles for some videos, but all the text for the subtitles in each file is in uppercase, and I would like to convert the files' content to lowercase, all in one go. I found on a website a bash command that would do each file separately:tr '[:upper:]' '[:lower:]' <input.txt> output.txt but of course involves specifying the input name and output name for each file.I have been trying to do it in a script that would work for all files in the current directory, without having to rename them each time, if that's possible. So far I've got the following, which doesn't work:

tr '[:upper:]' '[:lower:]'
done
However, my web searches cannot locate a way of specifying "each file in current directory" in conjunction with the "tr" command, but also without having to rename the file once converted to lowercase. Is it possible, or would the tr command have to create a new file for each converted file?

What I do not understand is why 'is a valid inequality' gets written to this file. I thought it would write '2', all the file names in the current directory, then '3' into the file called '5'. Why does the 'is a valid inequality.' get written to the file also?
