Nov 2, 2009
I'm trying to make a program to search for each blank line in a text archive, where blocks are separated by this blank lines. I want to write the number of the line in a new file "numblank.txt" I have this, but I think I have a problem with the "blank line" simbol.
awk '{if ($1 == /^$/) print NR }' $file1 >! numblank.tmp
where file1 is given as:
text

I have 8 files, and each contains around 2000 lines. I want to search the particular word in these files between line number 1500 to 2500.
The output should look like:
sample_1.txt :
1510:declare var testing
sample_2.txt :
1610:declare var testing
sample_7.txt :
1610:declare var testing
sample_10.txt :
1710:declare var testing
Is it possible to use grep for this task?

I am currently using a command like this to remove blank lines and lines which contain (not necessarily begin) with a #. Is there a better/simpler command?
cat /etc/apache2/default-server.conf | sed /^$/d | grep -v '#'

I am trying to construct a quick regex that will search for six lines of text without a clear line break between them. It only needs to search, not replace, as I will be using in gEdit (with regex plugin) anyway.
It's for editing subtitle files. The video player I will be using them on can only cope with 3-line subtitles, so I just need to edit any in the srt file that contain four or more. There won't be many so I can do it manually. For example:
26
00:01:47,357 --> 00:01:49,359
a motivated business
professional with
clearly defined goals.
[Code].....
but .* seems to mean "any character, or none", so that doesn't work. My experience of regular expressions is limited, but I do know they are very powerful when used correctly!

there is a way to add line spaces when asking for user interaction in a script. For example:
Code:
SPACE
Hello what is your name?
SPACE
SPACE
So this is asking a question but has a space/empty line at the top of the screen and 2 spaces/empty lines below. I've seen it done in a bash script using for each line/space needed
Code:
echo ""
So what does perl use?

I am trying to delete any blank lines within two patterns e.g.
Address: 53 HIGH STREET Cred Id :
MYTOWN
MYCOUNTY
MM12 6MM
Pay Method : Crossed Cheque
The start of my pattern is "Cred Id" and the end is "Pay Method" and I want to delete the blank lines between county and post code. I did find the code below but it doesn't seem to change anything:
sed -ne '/Cred Id/,/Pay Method/!bp' -e '/^$/b' -e -e p ll.out
I can get it to print just the range I'm interested in by doing sed -ne '/Cred Id/,/Pay Method/p'.

I have a file with three consecutive blank lines. I want to delete two and keep one. Also, if anyone could direct me towards a guide on regular expressions particularly as they apply to sed, I would be grateful. I am having a hell of a time figuring out the syntax.

This should be simple but I can't seem to find what I am looking for.I want to search a text file for the existence of certain strings and execute a command if they exist, something along the lines of:
if <string> exists
command
or
if <any member of this list exists>
command
I know how to manually search a file with grep, cat, etc., but the "if this exists" part eludes me.

What are they? Before they were not required to set up an internet connection(wired, I'm giving up on wireless for the moment) and now they are. I asked the lady at my isp and she didn't know. What should I enter in the blank for search domains?

2.54000000 2.54000000
2.54000000 2.54000000

I have a pdf file (nasm documentation) that used to be displayed perfectly with xpdf, but now all code example lines remain blank. On the terminal I get repeated lines such as:
Quote:
Error: Couldn't create a font for 'Courier Bold'
Error: Couldn't create a font for 'Courier'
I tried to figure out the problem... the same problem occurs with both evince and okular. However it does not occur when opening the same file under root (tested with xpdf), so it seems to be some permission problem. I tried searching on the error message but couldn't find a working solution.

I've come across an unusual requirement for a service in my Ubuntu system.Simply put, I need to find a way to search for all instances of a term in a file, delete lines containing containing that term, and delete four lines below each instance of that term. ither that, or copy the entirety of a file to a new file and skip over all lines containing the term plus four below it.This sounds kinda weird, I know. Without going too far into detail, I either have to change the logfile format for a server I'm running which is a huge pain in the butt, or I can just run a script to edit an HTML report generated from said logs. (Said report is really just for managers to peruse, and I like my log format, so I'm pursuing option 2.)

I have been experiencing a problem where the screen loads and after initial first few lines breaks up into multiple repetitions of lines. Reloading helps but has to be repeated when pageing down. Mail is no problem; it is supplied by my network provider. OS is openSUSE 11.2 which I update when advised. Below is a sample from the error console:

I have this massive table file with some data in it and I want to replace some lines that are wrong with the correct ones that are in another table file of the same format. The wrong lines are not all together in a block but randomly distributed so I need to make a loop checking if the line is in the other file and if it is, replace it. I want to try and do it with sed or awk but I don't really know how to....

i guess this is an installation issue as i am newish to Linux and got a F14 laptop from a used/refurb store... Anyway it seem i have difficulty with getting GTK running or maybe it is WGET...?
i did manage to install apt-get and was able to run synaptics ... but now whenever i try to run synaptics it flashes the interface and crashes. i tried apt-get search wget and it says invalid operation search. i tried apt cache wget and get a crash box in the upper right corner... i tried apt-get gtk+extra-2.1.2-4.fc14 and it says invalid operation gtk...
All of which is frustrating my attempts to get the GTK interface to J working. Their script uses WGET which i also cannot get.

I have a file with a random word on each line (3k+ lines). How can I get the lines with only five characters? I tried using grep file | more, but it returns all the words (even those less than 5 characters).
Edit: I also tried grep '.{5}' file | more but it doesn't show anything. And grep '.{5}' file | more returns all lines with four or more characters (I'm really confused about why it's doing this).
