Is there an easy way to prevent the logging of commands run into syslog as post-shell expansion?
I.e log a command of "ls *.log" as just that, rather than "ls a.log b.log c.log d.log" It makes rather a mess of the log files.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI am facing a problem while trying to log SSH messages in a separate file, say, /var/log/ssh_logs. I have tried modifying the syslog-ng.conf file as follows:
filter f_ssh { facility(auth, authpriv) and match("sshd[[0-9]+]:"); };
destination d_ssh { file ("/var/logs/sshd_logs"); };
log {

But still I am not able to get the ssh logs in the new file. They continue to go to /var/log/auth.
For some reason, when using this kickstart file the commands in the post section chroot is not executed. I used the ksvalidator to check the syntax and its correct.

I am running a shell script from a rc file in Linux. The shell script is going into a loop which runs for 8 hours. Now I want to prevent the shell script from running when Linux boots or I need to find a way to kill the shell script when it is running. I tried using killall, kill $! and Ctrl+C etc. Nothing seems to work. Can you suggest a way out. I am new to Linux.

There was an useful discussion on "how to stop logging cron to syslog". The useful answer is to update the line targeting syslog in /etc/syslog.conf to say something like:

the significant part being that cron.none means that cron will not log to syslog.
There was discussion about whether this was a good thing to do, but omitted to suggest that adding/ uncommenting the following line would mean that no information would be lost but that syslog would be less cluttered as a source of monitoring info:

You've still got all your cron-related log items available in cron.log if and when you need them. To make the new /etc/syslog.conf lines effective you should also, with root privileges:

They are NOT listed in my Startup Applications under preferences. For example, pidgin. Pidgin automatically starts at each login even though it is not in the startup apps nor can I find an option in pidgin itself. Tomboy is another. I always get an error that tomboy cannot be added to my panel when I restart. The error in the tomboy panel log is that tomboy is already running. Does ubuntu have a hidden "start up" folder like Windows does in the start menu? Where can I clear this file/folder?

I am trying to write a script that connects to a server and executes some commands on there. Something like this:

Unfortunately after login/password I guess the script doesn't jump past the telnet command, until I exit. What do I need to do to make the script start executing commands in the remote shell?

I am new to Minix. I'm so impressed by the speed of the system. It looks elegant, I like it. However, I have a question about the shell. In Linux, while using a shell, up and down arrow keys can be used to navigate through previously executed commands. On Minix with the sh shell, I can only get numbers printed out on the screen. I remember I chose a US-std keyboard when installing. Is there any way to use the arrow keys to navigate through previous commands on Minix?

I want to allow samba logging to the standard samba logfiles, but prevent the syslog getting clogged up by samba. I added syslog = 0 to smb.conf and reloaded the config but the messages were still appearing. I also tried the following (and restarted the syslog via /sbin/service syslog restart) # Suppress messages from samba.

I need to process billions of small files using bash shell commands with limited memory size (256MB). If any of those files contain certain "keywords", the file will be removed. I tried with command:
find . -type f -exec grep -i -l -H "keyword" '{}' + | xargs rm -rf
where all files are located within the current directory. But the command above failed in "out of memory".
I tried to create a user on Solaris 10 but when I try to login the user with "su -" I get the error message "no directory". When I try to login with "su" I get the error message "no shell".
I tried the useradd several combinations e.g.
All the tries i made didn't work. I also checked the permissions on /etc, /bin, /sbin and / and it seems ok so that the newly created user can access them.
