General :: Make A Bash Script Ask For A Specific Key?

Nov 21, 2010

I am attempting to learn how write bash scripts. I want one to ask for a specific key. For example, I want it to ask a question, then if it is like, y for yes, or n for no, it does a specific thing. I'm thinking it would be something like:

Code:

#!/bin/bash
echo "Are you a boy? y/n"

Looks like xmodmap doesn't have any options related to that.

General :: Make Openbox Automatically Start To Use A Specific Gtk Profile?

Jul 7, 2010

I have switched to openbox from Gnome and would now like to stop using Metacity altogether. When I was using metacity I had both a control theme (e.g. gtk theme) and fonts set up how I liked them in gnome-appearance-proporties. When Openbox starts, it gets my window borders up properly (ofc.) but fails to render my fonts properly and uses the wrong gtk theme. I can't find anywhere to specify which gtk theme to use or what method to render my text with. After Openbox is finished doing it's thing, and I run gnome-apperance-properties manually, it will automatically set everything to it's proper value, but I don't want to have to do this as it takes several seconds to preform and I'd rather not have it jury rigged like this.

General :: Make A Bash Script That Automatically Delete The Home Folders?

Feb 15, 2011

I am administrating a lab in a university and every semester we need to delete all the home folders of the accounts for the next semester. I would like to make a bash script that does this automatically and having trouble with it. Note that I am writing my very first bash script. What I need to do is make a script to delete the following:

Delete everything in /home/$exp$num/$dir
when "exp" could be either "rt", "ic" or "sp".
"num" could run from 1(single digit) to 45 and dir is "profile" and "work".

This is what I tried to write:

Code:

#!/bin/sh
cd /home
for exp in "rt ic sp"
do

[code]....

What seems to be the problem is the reading of "$exp$num" as a joint expression.

Programming :: Bash Script To Locate A Specific File?

Jun 14, 2010

I'm new to bash scripting and I've searched around the forums and Internet for this but haven't had any luck. I've found similar things but not what I need. What I need to do is write a simple script that uses what the user inputs to locate and display where a file is. I would prefer to use locate instead of find since I know that the person I am writing this for has locate on her machine (my mom, who is just beginning with Linux).I'm writing the script to make things easier for her while she learns In this particular part of the script I would like to be able to have the script prompt to enter the file she is searching for, read the her input and then display for her where the file is. I realize it would in most cases be much simpler just to teach her how to use locate, but she is very impatient and this is just a part of the script I will be writing, but I can't figure out how to do this.

Programming :: Bash Script To Test For Open FTP Sessions From Specific Clients?

Apr 8, 2009

I look after a server which accepts automatic overnight PASV FTP uploads from remote clients. When the uploads are complete, my Bash script copies the files to another location. The problem is, my script needs to be a bit smarter when it comes to detecting active FTP sessions.

I was using:

Code:

netstat -n | grep ":21 " | grep ESTABLISHED

to test if there were active sessions, but came unstuck when a local user left an unrelated FTP session active. The result - my script hung around all night thinking there was an active upload from a remote client. My server is behind a firewall, so remote clients all show an internal (NAT) address,so I can't differentiate by source IP address.I can't install LSOF or FUSER for security reasons. Is there a way I can test for active FTP sessions from specific users? I am running Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.2 (Tikanga).

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Make Rhythmbox Exclude A Specific Folder?

Oct 19, 2010

This question can be found on the Internet and on this forum but either there is no response or the advice is to move the folder to exclude on another path (in case of using a subfolder for ripped/downloaded mp3).

But in my case my music is on a SAN and I access it through CIFS. So every time I delete a file or folder it goes to the Trash, in a folder called #recycle, which Rhythmbox indexes as well. So I have to delete this folder to avoid duplicates...

Is there any configuration in Rhythmbox to exclude a folder?

I only see a configuration for multiple folders in gconf-editor:
/apps/rhythmbox/library_locations

I've got a NAS running and I'd like to somehow make some of the folders and files invisible to certain users only. For example, if I 'ls' a directory, I want to see files 'a', 'b', and 'c'. But if another user does 'ls' in the same directory, I only want them to be able to see 'a' listed.I know I can use 'chmod +700' to make certain files not able to be read/written, but the filename would still appear in a 'ls'.I know I can put certain files inside of a '.hidden' file in the folder, but then it would be hiEdit : I'd also like to mention that the users that connect to the NAS could be coming from Windows or Mac operating systems. So hopefully the solution would work for users from those systems also..

General :: Make Zsh Completion Behave Like Bash Completion?

Jun 2, 2010

I switched to zsh, but I dislike the completion. If I have 20 files, each with a shared prefix, on pressing tab, zsh will fully complete the first file, then continue going through the list with each press of tab. If I want one near the end, I would have to press tab many times.

In bash, this was simple - press tab and I would get the prefix. If I continued typing (and pressing tab), bash would complete as far as it could be certain of. I find this behavior to be much more intuitive but prefer the other features of zsh to bash.

Is there a way to get this style of completion? Google suggested setopt bash_autolist, but this had no effect for me (and no error message was printed upon starting my shell).
