General :: "light" Compositing Manager For GNOME?

I have an HP Pavilion DM3 (graphics is nVidia GeForce G105M), running Debian Squeeze with GNOME 2.30.
My preference for DE is Gnome + Metacity + Nautilus. I'd like to use Docky, but it requires compositing. So I'm looking for a relatively "light" compositing manager. I realise that "light" is ambiguous, but I basically want something that won't chew through my notebook's batteries because of CPU or GPU usage.
I know that Metacity is capable of compositing, but as far as I'm aware it's still testing. Some people report that it's smooth and lightweight, others claim that it eats up processor time. I've also seen references to a problem with nVidia, but no actual details.
I'm not averse to Compiz, but I haven't used it before and I don't know what to expect in terms of "weight." And maybe there's something else I haven't heard of.
So can anyone recommend anything? Or dispel my idea that Metacity is not the right tool for the job?

I know Metacity has a flag which enables compositing, and draws shadows under windows. Thing is, I prefer shadows because it helps me distinguish stuff on the desktop - a sort of usability an readability feature for me. However, I don't know if my older Thinkpad is too slow to do compositing in X or Metacity code is not optimized enough (yet), but turning compositing on makes my desktop experience too sluggish for my tastes.
I know Windows XP did shadows without compositing big portions of the screen, and it worked fast enough even for the desktop computers of its day. Anyone knows what are my options here? I like GNOME and/or GTK (haven't though much about the important details here) and would like to keep it. Do I need to switch to Openbox or Fluxbox or something like that? I am on Ubuntu 10.04, Thinkpad T43 with Pentium-M 2.0Ghz, 1GB RAM.

Is it possible to run the GNOME session manager but not have a window manager? It would also be nice to have a panel (or at least a status notification area) that was in a window, rather than a title-bar less menu bar.
The reason I want this is that I'm using my Mac's X server and logging into a VM running Fedora on the same host. And I've noticed some things, like the ability to use USB tethering, depend on a D-Bus session being active, and possibly the NetworkManager widget in the panel.

I am a ubuntu user and recently install kubuntu desktop in to it.In the ubuntu I am using gnome network manager which is very user friendly to connect Internet.But when I log to kubuntu I am getting headache due to that unfriendly network manager.Stillcouldn't connect to Internet in kubuntu.I heard that we can install gnome network manager tokubuntu. I have been trying to lighten the load that Ubuntu uses on my RAM and processor, and decided to try LXDE, as it is the lightest-weight DE that I have tried and liked. I noticed I didn't have any wireless connectivty under LXDE, so I checked the LXDE site for the solution, and it said to download and install LXNM, which supports wireless connections. Unfortunately, installing LXNM (apt-get install lxnm) also uninstalled nework-manager, and network-manager-gnome, on top of lxnm not working properly, and stranding me without any way of reinstalling the OS, and without an internet connection (I can't connect with a wired connection, either). Is there anything I can do, aside from reinstalling?

I'm curious, I believe that one of the ways that OSX make the GUI experience of *nix more 'snappy' was to ditch X and run the window manager more directly on the hardware.
If I'm looking to run Linux on a desktop, and have no interest in sending Windows to other machines on the network, can I run KDE or Gnome with no 'X' to eliminate that ever-so-slight lag with the window manager experience.
I guess basically what I'm asking is is there an equivalent of quartz for Linux?

Is it possible to install a different windows manager? Currently I am using an HP Netbook 210. The windows manager I am using is "gnome-shell" that comes as default with Fedora 15. However, I am wondering if I could completely remove this and install a different windows manager, such as Xfce 4.8. I am not talking about completely removing Fedora 15 and then installing Fedora 15 xfce spin. Just the window manager. How easy would it be to remove the gnome-shell windows manager and then install xfce 4.8 windows manager? Any steps to do this?

When i logged into a gnome desktop i got this message: "The GNOME session manager was unable to read file:'/home/(desktop name)/ICEauthority'. If this file exists it must be readable by you for GNOME to work properly. try logging in with failsafe session and removing the file." What commands do i use for that? or do i need to do something else?

I'm currently building a ubuntu distro and would like to run a script on GNOME startup. I've read about doing it through the session manager but I have to do it through chroot so I'll need to set it up as a terminal command. Is there a way to add an item to the Session Manager from terminal or, even better, a directory where I can put the script so it will run on start?

Previous used Ubuntu Gnome with Compiz but for my basic spec intel macbook (4 years old) its a little too heavyweight. So for now Im back on my macbook with os x, but now considering going back to Linux. Im looking for a window manager that has the following properties:
Supports virtual desktop (need 4 minimum) Works well with multi monitors - can move an app with shortcut from one monitor to the other (on same virtual desktop) Can remember window position (i.e. open vim on 2 monitor) - however must coerce everything back to first screen when 2nd screen is unplugged Keyboard shortcut friendly Not too hard to install Works well with minimum hardware such as integrated graphics.

i have been using it since a friend suggested to use it a month or so ago. I have knowledge of computers so I am not ignorant of everything (I say this for the linux pros in case this is a simple solution, and I have checked many forums before actually posting this question with no luck) and have tried several options. My laptop freezes at random times with the caps lock light blinking which seems a little strange. the only correlation I can make to this problem is that every time I use only wifi without the ethernet cable plugged in it will freeze. I have read a few forums that say it could be a bug in the wireless card drivers and some suggest it could also be graphic card drivers but it seems to only happen when wifi is enabled.I am using an ASUS G73 series with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5 graphics card, 8GB DDR3-1066 RAM, Atheros AR9285 802.11n Wireless LAN adapter, and an Intel Core i7-720QM processor (1.6GHz/2.8GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB L3 cache). I am also running Ubuntu 10.10 off of a 320 GB seagate Momentus and windows 7 off the stock 500 GB Seagate Momentus.

I used my computer this morning, but when I returned this evening, I am unable to reach the internet. Also the light on the mobo where the ethernet cable is plugged in is steady yellow.
My limited experience would tell me it is a hardware failure, but it seems so strange with nothing happening during the day. How might I best diagnose the problem?

I am new to linux and ubuntu, but it seems like this bloody bug has not been solved for years. There are many threads as i googled, back from years 2007, 2008... After lucid, i was hoping something (i do not know, if i should have) and googled recently. Found this:[URL].. That xserver thing (which i have tried before for 9.10) does not work!
What am i going to do about this? I cannot even use edge flipping because of that bloody resizing/maximizing problem. I cannot use stuff like docky. No compositing!
Until when should i wait? Is there a possibility of this bug being solved? Should i give my notebook to some windows user and get an nvidia one?

I'm running kubuntu, 10.10, 64 bit on my ASUS X59GL, with 4Gb ram - and NVIDIA on board GeForce 8200m.
I'm running KDE with compositing switched on - trouble is that it keeps saying Desktop effects are too slow and compositing is suspended. Surely this setup is powerful enough - this seems to be getting worse with each subsequent release - (a couple of releases ago, this didn't happen).
It's just happened again, and all I'm running is Firefox, nautilus, skype and dropbox (all but firefox are minimised), and uptime load average is .3 Is anyone else experiencing this problem?
Is there any 'ratings' as to how 'expensive' each of the effects are? - i.e. which are the least impact, and which are the most?

I guess pretty much everyone here is using Gnome. I've used KDE for 14 years, but kaddressbook is simply too primitive. And they've made it worse lately. Is anyone actually using a contacts manager in Gnome for business? I need advanced features like mail merge, ticklers, etc. Which one is most advanced? I want it to save contacts as vcards, not in proprietary formats, so the data is survivable, and ideally individually in directories, not as one big vcard wad.
Trying to use Evolution, but it segaults every time I hit Calendar; missing some icons from a Gnome package I can't figure out which one. (gtk-missing-image, stock_bell, stock_notes, etc) Also Evolution can not remember my mail certificates, and asks to approve them every time I start... for 16 email accounts this is a pain.

I am using xubuntu on my laptop and am completely sick and tired og thunar file manager. Found what I want - it is Gnome Commander. But really cannot find out how to make it default, especialy I would like to open it by clicking the button Folders (Places) near the Main menu button (hope I described it correct).

I am having issues with Gnome Power Manager. My wife and I have identical computers, with Linux Mint 8 installed on both. My Linux Mint 8 is a fresh install, whereas her's was an upgrade. Anyway, when I click suspend or hibernate nothing happens, not even an error. On my wife's computer this works just fine. sudo pm-hibernate, sudo pm-suspend, and sudo /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh do absolutely nothing.

On my login-screen, there is a message saying that the configuration defaults for Gnome Power Manager have not been installed correctly. I can still log in and work normally, but it seems to me that the system is pretty slow (which might or might not be because of this). It's been there for a while when I used version 9.10, but didn't disappear when I updated to 10.04. I searched for other threads with this problem, and found:
1) This one:URL...saying that it could be because the root drive was full, and said that I could run "sudo apt-get clean" to try to solve it. This didn't work, and it doesn't look like I'm low on space, anyway. Plus I can log in normally, so it doesn't look like the same problem.
2) This one: URL....advises me to run "sudo dpkg --configure -a", which seems to have worked for other people, but it didn't help me--when I restart, I still get the same error message.

Gnome Power Manager has been giving me problems for a while now, all of which I have at least found a workaround, (sudo gnome-power-manager) with the exception of this one.
Gnome power manager will not make my computer suspend or hibernate on low or critically low battery.
I've installed acpi, configured laptop-mode, and edited the values for GPM in gconf-editor to suspend at 10% battery.
Nothing seems to work.
