Slackware :: VirtualBox - Windowsxp Guest - No Sound - Unknown Audio Device - In The Windows Device Manager

Mar 11, 2010

For those that use Virtualbox on their slackware host and have a windows (xp) guest running. I have tried various settings for sound (Alsa, PulseAudio), the AC97 drivers are installed in the Windows xp guest os, but there is no sound and there is an unknown audio device (in the windows device manager). If I remove the AC97 drivers and use the soundblaster16 drivers in the Vbox settings there is no unknown sound device, but there's still no sound. why I can't get sound working?

General :: Ifconfig Return "unknown Interface: No Such Device"

May 9, 2010

I'm trying to install a Linux driver for my wireless network card (D-Link DWL-G510) on my Red Hat Linux 7.1 machine with a 2.4.37.9 kernel. I downloaded the serial monkey driver from the sourceforge site and was able to successfully compile the rt73 module and load it into the kernel. The problem now is that everytime I issue the command ifconfig wlan0 up it keeps returning with the following error message: wlan0: unknown interface: No such device.

I'm at a loss as to what to do here. I specifed wlan0 as the alias for the rt73 module in the modules.conf and also tried to load the driver with the command modprobe rt73 ifname=wlan0 (this specifies the interface name according to the instructions packaged in the driver), but the error message still keeps coming up.

Is there something else I need to do in Linux to configure the wlan0 part or is the module not recognizing the wireless network card? It would be quite strange if it is the later since all information from the Internet is indicating this is the linux driver I should be using for mentioned wireless card.

Software :: TuxOnIce Device Resume From Suspend Takes Way Too Long

I am having trouble with a rather peculiar timeout during resume from suspension and I was wondering if any of you have encountered the error or might have some leads as to what causes the problem.I am using Gentoo Linux with TuxOnIce patched kernel. While both hibernation and suspension works as advertised, there is a rather irritating timeout while trying to resume from suspension. Each and every time it takes about 60s for notebook to resume back to X session again, no matter what the conditions are (i.e. USB deviced plugged in, etc.)

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - Mounting DVDRW (SR0 Unknown Device)

Nov 14, 2010

Having some troubles mounting my DVD-RW after a reinstall of ubuntu. Now using 10.10.
Code:
root@Johnsky:/# wodim --devices
wodim: Overview of accessible drives (1 found) :
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
0 dev='/dev/scd0'rwrw-- : 'HL-DT-ST' 'DVDRAM GH20NS10'
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
So there's my scd0 sitting pretty.
Trying to mount it.

Code:
root@Johnsky:/# mount -a /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0
mount: /dev/sr0: unknown device
root@Johnsky:/#
sr0?

Code:
root@Johnsky:/# ls -l /dev/
total 0 .....

Lets try mounting sr0 directly instead.
Code:
root@Johnsky:/# mount -a /dev/sr0 /media/cdrom0
mount: /dev/sr0: unknown device
sr0 is still an unknown device.

I'm thinking when I reinstalled Ubuntu, it made some screwy links between devices. But I have no idea how to resolve this... and there's no point in my mind to adding the DVD-RW to /etc/fstab until I can actually mount it manually to know it mounts successfully. Back when I installed Ubuntu 9.x on this machine, I never had any of these issues. It picked up the DVD-RW automatically, appended it to fstab during installation, and done. But 10.10 seems to be having some troubles my 9.x installation didn't.

Ubuntu Networking :: Getting My Wireless Printer To Work - Unknown Device Connected To Router

Apr 27, 2010

I had previously been having loads of problems getting my wireless printer to work with Linux [http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1453697]. Everything is working fine now. However, something that confused me is that whenever I tried to ping the printer _before_ I got it working, it would fail with a _different_ IP address. That is, the command 'ping x.y.z.3' would fail with a message saying it was unable to contact 'x.y.z.2'

Now I am looking at my router - for something unrelated - and I've noticed that rogue IP address shows up in the list of connected devices. It has a MAC address but for the device name it lists "<unknown>". Should I be concerned about this? how to figure out what this device is?

OpenSUSE Install :: VFS - Cannot Open Root Device "NULL" Or Unknown-block - 3,1

Nov 14, 2009

Currently running rc2. Downloaded 11.2 final DVD, md5sum is good, burned DVD, YaST says media check is good. (And for completeness burned a second DVD and get the same problem.)

On booting from the DVD I select "Installation" - a kernel loads and starts checking available h/w devices then crashes with the above message.

Followed by Please append a correct "root=" boot option.

Tried with root=sda1 (partition that is /) and only change is unknown-block (0,0)

My best guess is that I have EXT4 (did a clean install of RC2)? And/or I dont have a swap partition?

Ubuntu Installation :: "gave Up Waiting For Root Device" - Page With A Command Prompt Flashing At Initiramfs

May 26, 2010

I have a Toshiba NB305 netbook running windows 7. I installed netbook ubuntu 10.04 from a USB drive this morning after playing with the live ISO off the USB. I chose to repartition and keep Windows 7. Upon boot, I get GRUB and when I choose either the Ubuntu or the Recovery I get a "gave up waiting for root device" page with a command prompt flashing at initiramfs.

The Alert reads, "/dev/disk/by-uuid/49024e15-119a-4339-ad23-f201ce4a6d1f does not exist. Dropping to Shell!

I'm still able to boot windows 7 as well as the live cd and see all the partitions and operating systems.

I've looked inside the Grub.cfg file and the commands aren't pointing to /dev/sda5/ but rather to the uuid? Is this normal? Does this need to be changed?

I will run this script and try and get some more info.

CentOS 5 :: PHP Not Working - Blank Page - Get This Warning: Unknown: Failed To Open Stream : Permission Denied In Unknown On Line 0?

May 5, 2010

I tried posting this before and I'm not sure what happened but I don't think it worked, so if it did please forgive the double post.am very very new to centOS and linux in general. I just want to setup a test web server that more closely mirrors our actual web server that is hosted by rackspace. I've installed centOS and tried to setup Apache, PHP and MySQL from a guide on the web using Yum. When I go to localhost in the web browser I'm able to see the default apache page. However when I create a php page it's just blank. When I look at the apache error logs I get this: PHP Warning: Unknown: failed to open stream: Permission denied in Unknown on line 0

I've been searching alot on the internet and I know the issue is permission related, but I don't know how to fix it. I've seen some forum posts that say you need to use the chmod 775 command on the /var/www/html folder.Currently when I do ls -l /var/www/html it returns

-rw------- 1 root root 19 May 5 13:16 index.php
-rw------- 1 root root 19 May 5 13:15 index.php~

I'm sure that this isn't correct but like I said I don't know much about how to set permissions or who the owner needs to be. I've done alot of searching and seen similar posts, but no one seems to explain it clearly.

Then a call trace...This is a brand new install of Maverick I copied my files onto a USB and did a fresh install on the whole drive using the alternate CD (the desktop and netbook editions both failed to read on my system) was previously using Karmic with no issues. I tried to e2fsck the dev/sda1 from the CD in "repair broken system" mode but the return was "clean" I read that as the file system being intact but this is an area that I have no real knowledge in.

I tried also with 10.04 LTS, the difference being that the install warning appears two or three times instead of once. Some results from googling (Ubuntu Forums, Ubiquity bug) suggest unchecking the initial update options. I am going to try this but I'm not sure if I'll be able to get the boot loader right (there seemed to be problems with this).

CentOS 5 :: X/Gnome Takes Long Time To Load And Sudo Takes Long Time To Execute

Oct 13, 2009

I am running Centos 5.3. I ran no updates, performed no installs, nor changed any configuration immediately prior to this issue. My problem is this: when I run the command startx (default runlevel 3), it is a long time (5-10 minutes) before Gnome startx, and once it does start applications will not run. Also, when I try to use sudo (from any environment, even ssh), it is a long time (5-10) before the command is executed.

I cannot say for sure, but it seems like this is an intermittent problem. Sometimes X takes a long time to start, but once it starts it will launch programs. Sometimes X takes a long time to launch, but once it starts it will only launch certain programs. Though presently X always takes a long time to start, and I cannot successfully launch any programs.

A while back a had a similar problem to this (x taking long time to start, sudo taking long time to execute) and it ended up being a DNS problem. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what it was and I stupidly did not document it. Maybe this is also DNS related, I don't know.

I don't know what log files to look at for problems with X, Gnome, and sudo taking a long time to start.
