General :: Find Total Memory Usage Of A Program?
Sep 22, 2010
I wrote a program that multiplies 2 matrices using multi-threads and another one using multiple processes and shared memory. Both in C.I need to find the total memory usage of these programs. I know of the top command, but when my matrices are relatively small they don't even show up on top because they complete so fast, how can I find the memory usage for these instances? Also, how can I find the total turnaround time of my programs?

Top only show the memory usage for individual processes. Apache often runs hundreds of processes, each of which may use only a small amount of memory, however the total memory consumed by all apache processes can be fairly large. Is there a way to see the total memory usage for all apache processes?

Is there a way I can start a program and then record a log of how much memory it's using at a specific interval until the program ends?
I've tried writing a shell script but get the error: ./apps/mem-test.sh: line 4: [: too many arguments
Here's the non-working script:
Code:
$HOME/apps/ImageMagick/bin/convert -limit memory 64 -limit map 128 $HOME/SSI/davidkennardphotography/Img-Orig/95-Pole-Bank.jpg -set option:filter:filter Lanczos -set option:filter:blur 0.8 -resize 1024x720 $HOME/resizedImage.jpg &
GOODY="ps -p $! -o pid,%cpu,rss,cmd | grep convert >>test.txt"

I have a java program that runs on Debian as a background processor. Yesterday the Java program stopped running. I looked at the memory usage, the system only had 5MB memory left, so my guess is that the java program ran out of memory to use.
However, after we restarted the java program, we could see that the free memory count started to go up. It kept going up from 5MB to over 400MB. The increase of memory happened slowly, when I measured it, I could see that with each minute passing by, there were a bit more memory added into the free memory pool, and meanwhile, the java background process was running.
I wonder why this would ever happen. It's as if our java program first brought the machine done because it consumed all the memories, then after restart, it starts to give back memories.

Basically I have a machine with 16GB of RAM and have just discovered that using all of it can crash the whole system over one process. How could I run a process on the system in such a way that if more than 90% of system memory is used, the process immediately crashes?

I have a computer with 16GB of ram. At the moment, top shows all the RAM is taken, (NOT by cache), but the RAM used by the various processes is very far from 16GB.I have seen this problem several times, but I don't understand what is happening. My only remedy so far has been to reboot the machine.

I am analyzing memory usage on a Linux system. When I run vmstat -s, I see the following:
waffleman@waffle-iron:~$ vmstat -s
3549184 K total memory
3206708 K used memory
1918012 K active memory
1037320 K inactive memory
342476 K free memory
[Code]...
I know the system has 4096 MB of RAM installed, but why does it show only 3466 MB? Can this be interpreted as total "available" memory? Perhaps the missing 630 MB is being used by the kernel and cannot paged out?
I also tried this on on an Embedded Linux system and saw a similar result. The DRAM chip has 128 MB, but only 124 MB shows up in vmstat.

i got a RHEL 5.2 machine.and i noticed that the total used memory(as shown in "free" command) is 3GB higher thanthe sum of RSS size of all processes(collected using "ps aux").i know that its not suppose to be exact because RSS counts ultiple times shared memory (so actually it suppose to be higher than the used memory).the server runs apache which runs a pretty heavy php program.my suspicion is that its memory leak?

I am currently developing a program that i need to compare to other similar programs, mainly to provide a cost v. benefits analysis for myself and coworkers. does anyone know of a program that can accurately provide this information? or, otherwise, an idea of how to start coding?I have seen in research papers before that quickness was actually evaluated in seconds/microseconds taken for processes to finish- is this legitimate?

My program consume a lot of memory so that the memory is used up fast and memory swap is very high.
I can find this by "ps" .

Mem: 8118 7764 354 0 181 7335
-/+ buffers/cache: 247 7870

We run Jboss app server that of course is all multithreaded under one JVM. I have couple of question regarding monitoring on per thread basis:
1. Is there a way to see which thread is bound to which CPU core?
2. Is there a way to see the CPU, Memory usage per thread? Something like prstat on Sun box which is real time and gives detailed information about threads per CPU

What originally seemed like an easy thing to calculate has given me a big headache. Perhaps someone can help me with my issue. I am trying to find, in particular, how much memory certain application processes are taking. The process always is the same name, main_server, but with an argument to tell it what to do when running as a daemon.
When running the following command against all "main_server" processes, it produces a result in megabytes based on the output of the rss field in 'ps'.
Code:
CALC=0
for ea in
`ps -e -orss=,args= |
sort -b -k1,1n |
pr -TW$COLUMNS |
grep main_server |
grep -v "grep main_server" |
[Code]...
Currently I am left scratching my head. For capacity planning purposes, it would be nice to know how many more 'main_server' processes could run on the system without causing it to swap. Knowing the buffer and cache usage will go down as running processes demand more memory, I prefer to look at the free memory excluding cache and buffers. However, since 'ps' is reporting the processes are using more memory than free reports is in use without those things, I have no way to know how many more processes the system can support. I played around with different fields in 'ps', such as vsize, size, etc, but with no luck in matching up any numbers.

I was playing with top to understand ram memory usage of every thread but i am in trouble with some basic questions:
- what difference is between 'thread' and 'process'?
- what does 'virtual image size' means, and Resident size, Shared Mem size, Code size, Data+Stack size, Swapped size? I thought that the only important field is 'Memory usage', but it is represented as a percent value...
I have googled a bit, but nothing really helped me. before opening top i thought that memory is divided in several pages by every process/thread (?) and that this occupied memory would be counted as 'used memory', and nothing else.
