General :: Unix - Making Shell Prompt Show Last Return Value

May 30, 2011

I'm currently on a Linux machine and the shell prompt is showing me the last return value and number of executed commands (picture included, with these numbers shown in purple).

My own computer doesn't have this, how can I configure it? I'm using Xubunto, if more details are needed let me know -- I'm not much of a Linux user (I don't know what's relevant here).

General :: List Of Process Status Codes And Meanings?

Apr 2, 2010

I'm trying to get this rather troublesome (and poorly made, I might add) game to work correctly, and right now it has frozen to a black screen with a frozen cursor. I can't figure out how to shutdown X, but while this game is frozen as it is, I might as well figure out what the process status SL+ means. If anyone has a link to a list of process status codes and their meanings

General :: Unix : List Children Processes For A Given Pid?

May 20, 2011

What I need is, given a process id, list all his children without any clutter (table header, other columns than the pid) What I have is :

ps h --ppid $PID Which gives me:

26277 pts/13 S+ 0:10 cmd1
26280 pts/13 S+ 0:10 cmd2

Using h allow me to hide the table header. Is there a way to tell ps to not print the pts/13 S+ 0:10 cmd part in order to get a list of children process ids separated by carriage return?

General :: LDAP: Ldapsearch Can't Return More Than 500 Results; Also, Can't Find Slapd.conf?

Feb 20, 2010

If I do something to the effect of this:ldapsearch -b "dc=example,dc=com" -x -z 3000

I'll get this back at the end of the result set:
# search result
search: 2
result: 4 Size limit exceeded

The thing is is that I have way more (thousands) than what's being displayed here. And I've tried to mess around with /etc/ldap.conf, changing the SIZELIMIT directive to something else, 10000, let's say, and restarting the server, but the same goddamn thing happens.

I've been messing around with this for quite some time now, hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on this so that I can learn my way out of this mess that is LDAP. Also in a related matter, I'm running Mint (based off of Ubuntu), and all the documentation that I've seen (probably read a good 100+ pages in a few days now on this) keeps telling me to make changes to my slapd.conf file. What slapd.conf file? It doesn't exist, I can't find it at least. find / -name slapd.conf turns up nothing.

Ubuntu :: Return A List Of Files Without The Extensions?

Jan 3, 2011

I am writing a bash shell script and I am trying to use a select case to modify a few files with the same filename but different extensions (i.e. problem.tex problem.log problem .pdf etc.)

It goes something like this:

Select item in $list
do
compile $item.tex
open $item.pdf
delete $item.log
break
done
exit

Right now my list is list=$( find . -maxdepth 1 -name "*.tex" ) which returns a list only from the current directory of all files ending in .tex so when I try to open the resulting .pdf file I get the error:

error: file problem.tex.pdf doesn't exist

So I'm trying to find a way to use just the name in a select menu.

Debian Programming :: Return How Many Items Occurs In List (Python)

Jan 29, 2014

I going through the Python course on Codeacademy. I have some trouble understanding what I'm doing wrong. This is my code below:

Code: Select alldef count(sequence, item):
    total = 0
    for x in sequence:
        return x
        if x in sequence:
            total += 1
    return total
print count([1,2,1,1], 1 )

The code gives me an error: "Oops, try again. Your function fails on count([1],7). It returns 1 when it should return 0."

It should be outputting 3 because 1 occurs 3 times in the list.

General :: Find And List Files Created In A Particular Year?

Jan 31, 2011

How to find and list files and directories present the current directory which were created in, say, years 2005, 2006, and 2009 and then move them to some other location, for example, /backup. Yes, I need to list them and move simultaneously. We can use:

Code:

find . -mtime n {};

but that n is troublesome for me to figure out files/directories created in years 2005, 2006, and 2009, for instance. Is there any way to match exactly by Year Value rather than calulating the "n" (days * 24 Hours)?

There are other files that should not be deleted which is why I am using the "*.trc" and newer files need to be kept as well. I have seen other postings but they do not cover both of the conditions. Below are 2 of the many attempts at doing this but I cannot get this to work.

find *.trc -mtime +31 -print| xargs rm -f {}
