Server :: Can't Get Postfix Mail Boxes From /var/mail To ~/Maildir?

May 31, 2010

I'm running a Debian LAMP server and I am adding postfix. The initial config is working and I can send and receive mail both locally and over the WAN. The problem is that I cannot get mail delivered to the user's home directory using Maildir/. I have set the:home_mailbox = Maildir/ parameter in main.cf but mail still goes to /var/mail after Postfix reload. The system is now using Maildir/ instead of mbox but in /var/mail. I really want to get mail into the user's home directory.

General :: How To Have Same User Account On Two Different Boxes

Jun 5, 2010

I have two Fedora 10 boxes. Both have a user account, Andrew. I use this account all the time.

Now when I put my USB drive (ext3-filesystem) in box I, create a file in it. It works. But when I attach it to box II and try to access the files, it gives me error - Permission denied. I have to use

Quote:

sudo chown -R Andrew

Only then I am able to access the files in it.

When I attach my drive to box I again, it also gives me error - Permission denied. So in both boxes, I have to use

Quote:

sudo chown -R Andrew

first. Otherwise I get Permission denied message.

This means Andrew on both systems is different. How can I make Andrew account on both systems same? So that I can access files on my usb drive without running chown all the time.

General :: Exim Setup For Large Outgoing Mail Queues?

Apr 25, 2011

I have a fairly standard Exim setup for inbound and outbound mail. Recently our development team has put together a PHP app that allows us to send out bulk mails to our clients. The PHP app uses standard PEAR libraries to initiate an SMTP connection to localhost (application and mail server are on the same box). The idea here is that the application will send out roughly 10'000 emails in a very short time period (60 seconds or so) which Exim will then hold in its queue for delivery.

The problem comes in where after about 50 emails, Exim stops accepting mail and loggs the following error in the exim_main.log file: SMTP command timeout on connection from localhost [127.0.0.1] Could it be that this is because Exim immediately starts delivering the mail and then stops accepting new incoming connections? I thought that increasing the SMTP limits may be the problem here, but even after setting new values in the exim.conf file to the following, I still get the same problem:
queue_run_max = 5000
smtp_accept_max = 5000
smtp_accept_queue = 5000

This begs two questions: How do I resolve this? What is the best way for configuring Exim to accept a huge amount of mail into the queue in a very short time period, but then gradually delivery it once it's all in the queue? I've seen some people run separate Exim daemons for incoming and outgoing mail; is this a good solution?

General :: Postfix Smarthost Not Relaying Mail To Exchange For One User

Sep 14, 2009

I have a RHEL 4.5 with Postfix 2.2.10 configured as a smart host for an Exchange 2003 server. Its been running well for three years like this. We have some users that are configured with alternate SMTP addresses for a secondary email domain in Exchange. One user is not getting his email for the secondary SMTP. All the others are. After some digging, the maillog indicates Postfix is not relaying his email to Exchange but to the Postfix local mail folder under /var/spool/mail. What in the configuration would cause this? His email is in the relay_recipients file as the others are.

General :: Send Mail From Domain As A User That Does Not Exist As Well As Email From Other Non-existent Domains

Jul 31, 2010

I have a server with a static IP that I use as a sendmail server. The problem is that port 25 is exposed. As a result, anybody can login to the SMTP server and send mail from my domain as a user that does not exist as well as email from other non-existant domains. I'm sure there are sendmail options that I can enable to do some checks, like if the user exists on that server or if the domain is the same on the server, etc. I was wondering if you guys can mention a few that I can add to my sendmail.mc file?

I have thought about auth login, the problem is if auth login is on my public port then I won't be able to receive email from gmail because it would be unauthenticated. Also, I only have 1 mail server. I know the ideal solution is to have 2 mail servers. One for outgoing mail/internal mail server where you can enable auth login and the other for incoming mail which just acts as the relay to the internal mail server. That way spammers can't login to send mail out. That's another question I had, how do I configure sendmail to only send email out/in?

Anyhow, so I have to make do with 1 mail server for now. So I decided to add a few rules on iptables. I grabbed the IP range that gmail uses when I receive mail from then and added it to my iptables with the following command.

[Code]....

Security :: Check Mail Via Tor And Browser Says Connection Untrusted?

May 20, 2011

I was recently connecting securely to the website where I have my mail account, and I connected through Tor. When doing so firefox presents me with the screen saying that the connection is untrusted and it can't verify the certificate. So I cancelled. I'm using torbutton and I turned torbutton to off and connected again with no problem. Then with torbutton on again, same thing (untrusted).

Is it possible the exit node I was going through is doing a man in the middle attack? However later when connecting through tor I did NOT get the warning about the site being untrusted. I really don't know what exit node I was using when I got the certificate warning and what exit node I was using when I did not recieve the warning. I don't know how long I stay on the same node or how/when it changes.
