General :: Building A Fanless / Low Power Consumption Server?
May 18, 2011
my SheevaPlug just died, and I need to look for new device to replace it. My goal is to build a fanless, low power consumption, linux server. Currently I am thinking of purchasing a QNAP NAS device (TS-110 model) and installing Debian on it.

Does anyone had any experience with fanless, low-powered power supply units (PSUs)like PicoPSU? Please share your experience.
I am also interested to hear about experience concerning the fanless cooling solutions and/or power-scaling for low-end CPUs like Intel's Atom, AMD's Neo or Via's Nano.

I am working on a traffic surveillance project which performs various image processing tasks with a number of visual sensors and a computing platform. My basic task in the project is the power optimization/management. I am using a ZOTAC-IONITX computing platform (Intel ATOM CPU + NVIDIA ION GPU). The problems that I am currently facing are:
I am unable to model the power consumption of various components e.g., processor, GPU, hard drive, memory etc, since there seems to be no way to measure the power consumption of individual system components. Since I don't have a power consumption model, I cannot come up with a power optimization algorithm. I am currently working on Linux. Is there any way to measure/model the power consumption of individual system component?
I have already checked powertop. It doesn't tells the power (watts) consumed by a component (e.g., microprocessor). It just gives information about the power state the processor is in (However there is no way to change the power state by the user) and the processors that cause processor to wakeup.

So I've come across several tips to optimize battery life on Linux. [URLs]. In addition to undervolting, I would like to underclock. Is there a way to control CPU speed outside of the BIOS via some software control in Linux... or some sort of boot manager? I would like to boot to linux using underclocked speeds and have Windows running full blast. Is there a way to run Linux completely in RAM? I have read that saves on power consumption from the hard drive.

how to build a cheap and fanless server? It's main uses would be web and file servering, but it could be a day when I'd like to add some streaming and mailing capabilities as well.

According to Phoronix [URL]... aspm&num=1 (which seems to only test Ubuntu kernels) the problems should affect all users of the affected kernels, including Debian's, but that article provides a fix. I don't remember anyone here mentioning lower battery life and increased heat on their mobile platforms, though.

I'm very curious about something. I like to use my command line as much as possible. So, most of my work and usage of my computer revolves around the command line. In such a case I could work without having to use any graphical interfaces. My only current limitation is WLAN connection isn't working for me, but that belongs in another thread and something for me to do for now.
My question is, Is it worth it in terms of battery life to work in level 3 when running a laptop on a batter? What sort of extension to the life would one expect?

I have installed a new PC system
- OpenSuSE 11.3, 64bit
- AMD Phenomen II X4
- ASUS M4A88TD-V Evo/USB3
- 3 hard disks
- etc.
After start-up with runlevel 3, no applications running, network is up, the overall power consumption of the PC (without monitor) is ca. 70 Watt. After some minutes the monitor goes to power saving (terminal mode, runlevel 3 !), but the power consumption rises to 120 Watt! After pressing a key on the keyboard (e.g. Num) the monitor leaves the power save mode, shows the login screen, and the power consumption falls to 70 Watt. In parallel I have investigated the system via ssh and running top, but I have not observed any abnormal operation. I looked into /proc/acpi/* but I did not find something unusual.

Judging by the number of responses (close to zero) to other threads about powertop on this forum, I have little hope in getting any answers. However, I do not know where else could I ask. PowerTop tell me that even after applying almost all the tips and tricks from lesswatts.org, my laptop still consumes over 72 Watts while idling.
Code:
< Detailed C-state information is not P-states (frequencies)
1.60 Ghz 0.0%
800 Mhz 100.0%
Wakeups-from-idle per second : 451.1 interval: 10.0s
Power usage (5 minute ACPI estimate) : 72.5 W (0.3 hours left)
Top causes for wakeups:
[Code]...
Suggestion: Enable USB autosuspend by pressing the U key or adding usbcore.autosuspend=1 to the kernel command line in the grub config This is when I am not touching the laptop. When I am surfing the web or listen to music, it goes up to 2000+ wakeups! How do I cut it further? I am getting like 20-30 minutes max on battery and this is unacceptable cause in Windows I get at least 3 times that.

What my situation was before the problems:
-I dualboot win(xp) and xubuntu(11.04)
-No problems whatsoever except for the fact that power consumption was higher on xubuntu.
Then i read something that said that the kernel i was using was effectively having power issues and that it could be fixed so in went into the terminal and nano'd the grub config file and update-grub'd with the addition i had read all over the internet. When i rebooted it seemingly had worked but once i opened a ..... video it didn't react to anything (i'm 99% sure kernel panic since there was no hdd movement). So i forced it to shutdown and when i got back in again i nano'd the file again but for some reason i didn't only remove the power stuff but I also removed the quiet splash. Once i had rebooted it would suddenly ask for username and password twice.
once the older looking menu an then the newer looking one with the fancy bg). The first time i got in okay but afterwards i could only get in as root. I thought i had simply forgotten my password but i ran passwd myusername as root and it didn't work(only when i typed something random it gave the wrong password message). As root i also can't edit the users and groups(when i open it it stays grayed out). how do i fix this. If i will lose my account anyways then how do i get my files/bookmarks/... of of it.

#ps -eo vsz,rss,pid,args | sort -n
How to accurately calculate which process consuming from swap, just the swap no ram + swap!

I have some general question with with quite an impact for the system I use I have a media server with 2 raid1 mirrors of 2 1 To disk aggregated with lvm and used by a big 2 To ext3 partition.A few days ago, munin (awesome!) started to send me notifications about smart attributes of some disks. Fyi, here's my hdparm.conf:
/dev/sda {
spindown_time = 54
}
/dev/sdb {
[code]...
regarding reliability and disk longevity, is it recommended to have them spin down while not used (most of the day, as these are storage unit for movies, pictures, documents..) or let them spin whatever.. ? Those are WD green and according to Tom' Hardware, the consumption is only slightly greater in idle compared to standby. The other question, (boat one as we say in french ) what is the best configuration here ? My 2 raid 1 stripes, or a raid 5 ? I know that two disks kill the raid 5, and they have to be of the same stripe to kill the lvm on the raid1, but what are the odds ?

I have 50 identical workstations that are being dropped shipped from the vendor directly to the remote locations. I need to install a identical configuration, including installed packages, scripts and customize configuration onto each of this workstations. I cannot set up a kickstart server to install from remotely because of my organizations security policies. Not to mention that it would be painfully slow. I thought about DD-ing my "Master" build and sending it to the remote sites, but some of the admins are not very Linux savvy. I would really like to build a bootable DVD that would install the cloned Master build from my server to theirs. I was looking for something that would look like Anaconda to the person installing the image. If I could get them through this base install I think it would be easy to document how to change the workstation unique parameters or value. How to accomplished this? BTW, this will be a RHEL 5.3 server install.

I have a dell PE1750 server which would not boot up after a power failure. I am thrown to a shell for maintenance after showing an error in file system check. The server was running - Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 3 (Taroon). Please let me know if I can try to recover from this error by booting from the 1st CD of a higher version of linux like RHEL5. I ask this because I do not have the old media with which the system was setup. Can the use of latest OS CD cause any problem?

I am trying to figure out the best server configuration for the following:Low power (I want to plug the server in and forget about it)High redundancy of data (I don't want to loose my music and documents!)The ability to stream music + movies to laptop (maybe subsonic or Jinzora)VPN server with IPsec or OpenVPN NAS $800 budget 2TB with ability to add more drives :Unix Server with software RAID (maybe RAID6)
VPN setup on virtual OS via VirtualBox
NAS setup on virtual OS via VirtualBox
My Questions:What would be the best raid configuration if I wanted at least 2TB of data and the ability to add more disks when the space begins to add up?What would be the best OS to use for setting up a software RAID (is a FakeRAID a better solution)?Does it make more sense to separate the VPN and NAS with different OS's?My goal will be to access my data from any computer from anywhere but mostly just my Laptop from work.

was originally looking to setup some kind of NAS in my house due to the fact that me and my wife both access the same music libraby, photo library etc. and was looking at one of the IcyBox enclosures.I realised that whilst this was a quick and possibly easy way to set something up, it wasn't in keeping with the true geek within so decided to look into setting up a full RAID5 file server. This would then allow me to install and setup various other services such as Web and FTP server, Mail server and DNS server should I ever want to.
I have an old machine (Duron 1GHz I think) with 1GB ram but the only problem is that is doesn't have an on board SATA controller so I was wondering what PCI SATA controller cards work with Fedora? Doesn't need to have RAID capabilities since i'll be using Software RAID anyway, just need a nice cheap Fedora friendly controller card that'll do the job.

I've been running my dedicated server on Ubuntu 10.04 for 300 days non-stop so far (touch wood). I'm planning to purchase a dedicated server to host many large sites. The specs are Sandybridge Xeon with 16 bay x 2TB storage using RAID5 (Adaptec RAID 51645).I don't have experience with RAID, but I read that ext4 can only support filesystem up to 16TB, my plan for the system is to have 32TB of storage. How can I make Ubuntu run this configuration?
Also, can Ubuntu 10.04 recognize the Adaptec card? Going through Adaptec website there is no mention of drivers for Ubuntu (although many other distros are available).

my workplace is switching from Oracle app server to Tomcat. I've never been a sysad, and never administered an app server. So that part is going to be completely new to me.ortunately, I don't have to be the primary on this - but my manager is encouraging me to learn the setup and how to do the job.So, my situation is that my test "server" is a P2 with 256MB of RAM. I know I'm not going to get screaming performance out of it, but all I really need it to do is run my web server and file server to support my Tomcat install on a separate box (P3, 2.8GHz, dual-core with a gig of RAM).
I'm not really a n00b to Linux, so building the system isn't a stumbling block. Which distro, and which version of that distro, is a stumbling block. I know ubuntu is easy to set up, and very popular. If I went that way, should I get the desktop version? Or the server version? I *want* the GUI, but don't require it. And I'm not real certain what they're referring to (hw or sw) when they call it "desktop" or "server".I'm not looking for a challenge to broaden my horizons in terms of my Linux knowledge - I just want something I can set up quickly so I can get on with learning what I need to about the server installation, configuration and administration.

(i think, that it is not ok, because when i build the same version of kernel on x86_64 platform, after rpmbuild command i have kernel, kernel-devel and kernel-headers packages) My CentOS version is 5.2; platform i686; kernel, kernel-headers, kernel-devel packages 2.6.18-92.el5.

While building my new server I grinded ta hold shortly after inserting the FDR10 DVD.
Hardware:
Chenbro es34069
Albatron KI690-AM2
AMD Athlon X2 64 4850E
IDE 2.5" HD (master)
IDE Slimline DVD (slave)
4x SATA II swap (still empty)
It stops at the message "net: Registered protocol family 2" but in one of my desperate attempts I changed almost every setting in my BIOS (updated to 1.07) and all of a sudden it passed on. Stupid enough I figured it would be a small effort to find the setting and figure out the problem, so I changed them one at a time after loading the defaults....

I need some advice or tips or maybe your own experiences about building a home data storage or NAS.Here's some thoughts / requirements I think it should have:It should expandable. I'll stick a couple of 1TB HDDs and a little later I'll stick some moreIt should easily integrated to both Ubuntu and Windows 7. Ideally it'll be an integrated part of the filesystem.I'm thinking some sort of RAID as a backing up my data. RAID 1 seems like a such a waste but then again, these days, HDDs are cheap.And when I do add more HDDs, I'd like them to appear as one big storage unit instead of separate drives.Any suggestions and tips on how to go about this is welcome. Questions are plenty: should I go with server hardware or is bigger ATX case and standard hardware enough? I'll need some pointers so keep 'em coming
