General :: Boot Slackware Without A USB Drive?
Jul 31, 2011
Background: Before this I was using Ubuntu, but I decided to use slackware from now on. So I installed it using a DVD and using the setup program also formatted a USB drive since it asked if I wanted to. After this I could boot into slackware fine (including getting into KDE with startx) and I can shutdown using halt -r now. When I boot with the USB drive in it says "Welcome to the Slackware Linux custom USB boot stick!".
Problem: If I turn on the computer without the USB drive it goes into "grub recovery". I don't know what I should do if I want to boot the computer without the USB drive. I also don't know why GRUB is coming up because I thought it had installed LILO.

I am hoping to find some-one to help me install Slackware on a USB hard-drive and get it to boot. I get it installed just fine, except, when I go to boot into it, I get a kernel-panic --error message. I am sure its the kernel and that I need to some-how set up a initrd, however, I am a little rusty these days and can not quite seem how to do it. I have a Western Digital Passport external (USB) hard-drive. I will joy-in all help, and, I'll keep looking.

I'm familiar with editing Grub's "menu.lst" file to add additional OS's to the boot list. Does Slackwares Lilo have a similar config file ? I need to add a second physical drive with Windows 7 on it to the boot options in Lilo. If it's not a config file, how do I add a second os to it ? Slack and Windows are both already installed on two different physical drives so I won't be installing, I just need to add the Windows drive to Lilo.

I'm getting a netbook with no cd/dvd drive but it boots off of usb, so I've made a slackware 13 usb stick to start the install. I also have a usb hard drive I was going to copy the packages to. I'm wondering... should I boot with the usb install stick and then connect the usb hard drive afterwards?

I try to install Slackware to my IDE hard drive and boot first from Slackware DVD. After I loaded huge.s kernel, and tried to partition the hard drive using fdisk by entering "fdisk /dev/hda", I found out that the partition size is max to 3 Gigs instead of 80 Gigs.
I think the kernel is looking at my boot disk, which is around 3 Gigs. How can I make so that it looks at my IDE drive instead at my boot drive? Is there any manual that shows me how to install Linux from scratch this means I want to wipe out all my hard disk and install Slackware Linux there?

I have a USB drive on which I want to install Arch Linux (using the installer, not unetbootin or something similar, as I want the drive to be persistent.) The computer from which I want to boot this USB supports booting from a USB floppy, not a normal drive. Is there any way for me to make a USB floppy on another drive and use that to boot the normal USB drive?

I wanted to use a USB drive to boot slackware because I do not have a blank CD or DVD. So I went to [URL] first, but I couldn't get dd and syslinux to install on windows 7. So then I brought out my trusty puppy linux USB stick, and copied the file onto puppy. Then I typed in dd if=/(desktop directory)/usbboot.img of=dev/sdd1 bs=512 but when I booted my computer up with the usb stick I get the message "boot error"

I have a Toshiba laptop with BIOS that will not recognize USB as a boot medium (I have purchased two USB 'thumb' drives with Distro's that do boot but the BIOS see them as HDD devices!)I did manage to install and boot a distro from the USB HD but ended up with the USB drive having to be connected' to select any of the OS partions, to boot anything.I do realize that somehow, when installing the new distro on the USB drive, I changed the GRUB configuration to be on the USB drive which obviously I did not want, so can

I can now read, write and format a floppy disk. Score! [It only takes three separate command line instruction to unmount the drive, format, remount specifying the filing system but what the heck I can do it Now I need USB flash drive to be accessible in Slackware. Otherwise I cant get apps and multi-media data across (without great grief anyway) to test the functionality of KDE.
Gads this is hard work! There is no difference in the operation of Linux than UNIX at university in 1989! Now I see why Im seeing all these adverts for work out east saying Experience in Linux installation essential. Linux requires a wad more work than Windows, MacOS, DOS or even CP/M! You really *can* make a living out of this!

I recently had a laptop die on me. I, of course, then to recover the hard drive. I wanted to install slackware to a partition on my drive, so I can have a linux distro with me( also I have a FAT32 partition for shared space) I have a Slackware 13.1 disk one (which i need, since I don't need a graphical environment or anything), and proceedd to follow setup program. I have a 5GB '/' partition, a 10GB '/home' partition, and a 2GB swap partition. My ROOT partition is bootable. The setup program seemed to complete succesfully, but it won't boot. When I choose to boot from my hard drive (in the bios), it reverts to the slackware disk, if present, or the standard windows drive.
I installed LILO to the superblock of my external, because according to the setup the MBR option installs to "The MBR of your first hard drive", and I wasn't sure if that was right, since my first hard drive is my windows one. Since i'm not even seeing LILO, I think it has to do with installing to the superblock. I want to be able to boot a basic linux distro if needed from whatever computer I want. I'm not sure if slackware was the right choice, but it was one that I had worked with installing before, and knewthat you didn't necasarraly have to instal all the graphics stuff. I just want a shell. Sorry if my question sounds retarted, I'm new to the whole "Multiple drives, and operating systems" thing

It's not a Slackware-specific question, but I figured someone here might have some insight. Basically what I've got is a 120 GiB drive I was using to boot Slackware. I then mounted a third hard drive inside of my PC (500 GiB) that I wanted to clone the Slackware image onto. But I don't want this drive to be solely used for Slackware so I partitioned off about a 250 GiB chunk for it. Using gddrescue I cloned the image. It booted fine and everything looked good other than Slackware still only seems to think it's got 120 GiB to work with. My question is how can I make it recognize the full 250 GiB, or how can I go a different route to utilize the extra space? Is there some way I can just clone it directly and then go about resizing it afterwards? The first thing I tried was to clone it directly and then attempt to resize it afterwards.However, GParted wouldn't seem to let me resize it so I went this other route of setting up the partitions beforehand.

I have a dual boot computer with slackware_64 13.1 and windows.
I have a 120G ide hard drive that I need to add to my computer.
Adding this hard drive changes the drive device id's and slackware won't boot.
as installed, my drives look like this:
When I add the extra hard drive, it looks like this:
I know there is a way to make an initrid and to use the uuid identifications for the drives, and even use labels instead of the long uuid's, but I'm unfamiliar with this process, so I was hoping somebody that's done this before might point me in the right direction.

I am installing slackware 13.1 from USB. This will NOT be a dual-boot system.The install appears to work correctly installing to /dev/sda2 (/dev/sda1 is my swap)However I get an error when installing to the LILO to the MBR, root, or even to a floppy drive (I tried all 3 multiple times with no luck)My issues comes when LILO is installing.
After a couple of video warnings I get the following:
Warning: Device 0x0010 inconsistent partition table

I have been playing around with a Ubunto 10.04 live cd (32bit) on my mac. I want to be able to boot this OS (or similar) on my Mac, and on any other computer (PC or Mac). I also want it to remember changes and files. From looking around this is possible from a USB (with a Casper RW loop file I think). I have used the Live CD to create a bootable flash drive, which works on PC's but not my mac. Using these instructions: [URL] I was able to get my Mac to see the Linux at boot but once I clicked the Tux icon it would hang/ freeze. I let it sit for 10+ min and nothing happened. I started over (with a fresh formatting) and got the same results. I have reformatted the flash drive and am ready to try over. I think that I am goofing up in terminal steps as I am not use to doing that. After the last step in the terminal I get an error, something like invalid number or similar, it is not the one mentioned in the instructions.
I know that this for advanced users, I am not yet but working that way. I an a (retired) power windows user, moderate Mac user and a new Linux user. I want to learn which is why I am asking. I am not in a spot to install Linux directly on my Mac, so I I am seeking help to do it on a flash drive. I want the ability to run off any computer and I see this as I way to get there.

Have an older EMachine that I'd like to load up with Linux. The EMachine already has Windows 2K loaded. Have Fedora Core 2 and Red Hat 5 and for my test would take either. Have tried to boot up this emachine with the (either) dvd in the drive and made sure dvd is first in boot up sequence yet all that happens is Windows loads.

I downloaded damn small linux to a CD; consisted of an index file and a .iso file. I'm trying to boot my Windows XP PC from the CD RW drive; have changed the bios settings to put USB CD in first position at boot config screen. Also tried another option that seemed to refer to CD RW drive, and put that in first position. my PC keeps starting up Win XP - I do hear the CD RW drive cranking away at startup, but that's it.

I have a 2GB usb flash drive and I wanted to boot a linux distro from it. My dilemma is that I'm having a hard time balancing size with quality.I've been going the virtual route so far in my linux studies but the variety with hardware is so limited. If I had a bigger flash drive it wouldn't be a concern but I need to make do with what I have.So what's a good learning distro that has good features but can be installed onto a 2GB flash drive? I'm sure there is more than one but I'd like to get some different input from more seasoned users.

I am having some trouble setting up a dual boot with Win XP and Slackware 13.1. Lilo lists both Linux and Windows, but when I select Windows, all I get is a black screen. I have two hard drives, sda1 and sdb1. I first installed Windows on sdb1 (it is a smaller, older drive). I then installed Slackware on sda1 and selected to install Lilo on the MBR. I'm guessing that by doing this, I wrote over the Windows information that was already there. Could this be my problem? I feel like this should be an easy fix, but I just don't know where to start in order to fix it. If it helps, here is the end of my lilo.conf file.
# Windows bootable partition config begins
other = /dev/sdb1
label = Windows
table = /dev/sdb
# Windows bootable partition config ends
# Linux bootable partition config begins
image = /boot/vmlinuz

I've installed Slackware 12.2 on a 12 year old desktop. It is the only OS on the machine. When I press the Power button it stops at Slackware's splash screen asking me to choose an OS, even tho' there is only one to choose from. I installed LILO to the MBR and that is also listed there as a possibility.
Is there a way to set Linux so it will simply load automatically?

So I got slackware 13 from the website and created 4 partitions (primary) and left some (100GB) space as I planned to install windows 7 in that. After installing slack, when I booted from windows DVD (rtm) in partition section it said I already have 4 primary partition so windows cannot used the rest of space despite the fact that it was free (windows even grayed all options like new partition and format etc. for that space). So I thought I'd create 2-3 primary partition for linux (slackware) so that windows can use the free space and make it a primary partition.
So, Next I formatted with slack (3 partition, 2 Primary, 1 extended, total space for slack 50GB) and after its installation I worked my way with windows, but it just created one partition of 100Gb, won't let me create any saying all primary partitions are created. Anyway, I created that partition and installed windows 7. But it messed up my lilo (slack won't show in boot menu) neither can I create any new partition.
After all I reformatted again created 2 partitions for windows (that actually became 3 as windows 7 create 100Mb separate partition for system). Installed windows correctly. Then I booted with slack , which allowed only creating 1 partition as 3 were already there. So I created 1 extended partition, in which I created 4 partition 1 to mount for /boot (100M), 1 for /swap (3G), 1 for home (10G), 1 for / (35G) everything worked fine till I reached last point to install lilo. At that point it said cannot install Lilo (I tried all options simple, expert, install to MBR etc.) but it just won't install. Anyway, after that it said you can install it manually so I clicked OK. Then it said setup complete, remove disk and press alt+ctrl+del to reboot, which I did. But there is just windows 7, no slack ?
