General :: Getting TinyCore To Work

May 21, 2011

After waiting about a week compiling updates for this gentoo box (684 to be exact) only to have the whole distro crap out over conflicting glibc, portage, python, and gcc versions and bugs I decided to give up on gentoo. However I saw an even more interesting linux distro called "tinycore" on the net.So I burned an iso and properly burned it to a CD. The CD is fine because it loads perfectly on another machine. The distro will load to a command line just fine but when trying to start the gui it freezes with a small X in the middle of the screen. After waiting minutes for something to happen I restarted the laptop.

Its got an Intel 852/855GME onboard video that seems to be causing the problem while it works with every other linux distro just fine. Err... Well the vesa driver works just fine on every other distro. The i915 driver takes some major work to get it working but it can be done.I think tinycore uses Xvesa while other linux distros use Xorg... Could this be a problem?I couldn't find anybody else (via google) having problems with no video in tinycore so I thought I might ask for help here.

May 16, 2011

We have several HP Thin-Clients of type t5545 in use. We redirect USB-Media to the terminalserver. Because the t5545 runs a debian customized by hp, we can treat it like a debian in some way.First, I'll explain how usb-redirection is configured: automatically mount it to /tmp/tmpfs/media /tmp/tmpfs/media is redirected as disk "Z" via rdesktop-parameter -r disk:sharename=path in case of removed usb-media udev will run a script to umount -l the device and delete the mountpointThe environment:

Thin-Clients run linux: root@mac-addr:/tmp/tmpfs/media# uname -a

Ubuntu :: Support For Language While Keeping English As Language Used To Display Desktop?

Mar 5, 2011

I have some music in another language, but when I open the songs in Banshee, their song names just come up as weird characters (like μ).I went to [System --> Administration --> Language Support] and installed support for that language, but the songs still come up like μ. (But in Nautilus, their proper names show).

I know the solution is to change my whole system language to that language, but I don't want to do that, as I am not very fluent in it. Is there any way to enable support for that language while keeping English as the language used to display my desktop?

General :: Obtaining Windows Printer Share SMB Settings (for Tsclient/rdesktop)?

Aug 22, 2011

I have access to a "virtual" Windows server terminal, which I can access through my Ubuntu Linux via tsclient or rdesktop. Additionally, there are printer shares on this network, which can be accessed from any Windows PC on the network (including the "virtual" terminals); lets say the address is [URL]. Now, I open \printshares.company.com in the "virtual" terminal in rdesktop (avoiding tsclient since it has a Bug #94743 in tsclient (Ubuntu): Terminal Server Client isn't able to copy to/from clipboard) - and I can see all printers fine.. However, when I'm on my Linux machine directly on the work network, I try and do something like:

$ ping printshares.company.com
PING printshares.company.com (192.168.0.200) 56(84) bytes of data.
^C64 bytes from 192.168.0.200: icmp_req=1 ttl=124 time=10.4 ms

[code].....

Is it possible to retrieve the - let's call them "connection settings" - from the Windows terminal session, so I could replicate them under Linux when running smbclient? the IT department running these Windows servers is quite irritated by people using Linux; and will offer no support to those kinds of "customers". Furthermore, if obtaining those settings requires some installation on the client session, since I don't have permissions to install anything on the Windows terminal session.

General :: Japanese Language IME Available In 10.4?

May 14, 2010

I just got used to Ubuntu and was using Easy Peasy. I wanted to upgrade because I was having a few issues with EP on my EeePc 900- I went to 10.4.

I am leaving to go study abroad in Japan in about 10 days and have everything configured except the Japanese language aspect.

I went to System -> Admin -> Language Support and installed the language files, etc. After reboot, they are installed...but there is no language box or any hint at all that I can use it.

There doesn't appear to be a shortcut like ALT + SHIFT in Windows.

In the simplest terms possible (i.e. step by step), how can I be able to type Japanese in Office, Firefox, Evolution, IM, etc.?

General :: Is Specifying A Font For A Specific Language Or Script Possible?

Mar 12, 2011

As a bilingual user, I have a lot of things that someone like that has to have like a lot of UNIcode fonts of the languages I use and keyboard layouts. My question is really simple (though the answer may not ):Is it possible to specify a specific font for a specific language? For example:

I have about four different looking Singhalese fonts on my system:
1. LKLUG
2. Bashitha
3. Malithi
4. another one... (awkward)

right now my system uses LKLUG, but I'd like to use Bashitha since it's more easy to read. How do I do this? Things like setting the system wide font in SystemSettings or other ways is not what I'm looking for though... my System font is DejaVu Sans, and I want the System to use Bashitha ONLY for the Singhalese text and DejaVu Sans for the rest..I tried modifying the ~/.fonts.conf file..

General :: Language Learning Software - Libraries?

Oct 28, 2010

I'm cross-posting in order to get as a wider audience to get as much feedback as possible. I am currently studying to learn the ) Gidhlig (Scottish Gaelic language and finding studying by rote out of a book a bit 'limiting'. Because of this, I am thinking about creating a software project which could act as an interactive way to helping me learn the language. I've got a few ideas floating in my head but the direction I want to take is that the software is not an alternative but an aid to be used in conjunction with traditional studying materials. I was thinking possibly small interactive games or exercises that both are fun as well as to test and use the parts of language I have learned. There might also be a bit of reporting to show strengths and weaknesses.

Firstly, the technical specifications, that offhand, I can think of that the project will need to meet:

1. Cross-platform (while I would like it to be just Linux, I have to be realistic that people would rather use Windows)

2. The language data is separate from main program so that the software can be used with other languages.

3. Not too complex so that it is quick and easy to program as I will be doing it myself.........
