General :: Repartitioning Without Losing Root Partition?

i have suse linux enterprise desktop on my laptop with these partitions :

now i want to delete all partitions except root partition (sda1) and make it's size bigger then create other partitions again.

I didn't like my partitioning layout so I have repartitioned and reformatted the drive. I have copied the backed up back onto the hdd, and i have installed grub successfully. Still, when I boot the machine, I get an error message: "No root device found. Boot has failed, sleeping forever.". When installing GRUB, it managed to found /boot/grub/stage1 without a problem, and I have installed it onto the MBR

Just ran into an uncomfortable problem. I usually never save any documents on my machine, and keep all my stuff on an external USB hard disk. (an 80GB TrekStor DS microdisk q.u)
Well yesterday this disk just would not mount.
Read through related posts but nothing seemed to work. Even tried it on a Windows machine.
Tried TestDisk utility. Found nothing wrong with the drive, but still could not repair the MBR.log code...
Palimpsest Utility recognized the drive, but just will not let me do anything with it except format it.
How can i repair the partitions and MBR without losing all my data?

when I tried to install Fedora on my pc, I got this error message " Defined Root partition not created a / boot/efi partition. I am trying to install it on a seperate hd. My main one has windows xp pro, but I do not want to interfer with that at all?.

This is my first post on Ubuntu, ive been testing/and dual booted then reverted back to windows this past year, and now have gone back to school for computer networking...so im SUPER interested,So - i want to install Ubuntu on my little Toshiba netbook that i drag everywhere with me, but im afraid to screw with it's partitions. I dont want to spend $$$ to get a larger than 8GB flash drive to create a recovery from the HDD partition that is installed on their, and they dont come with the backup/recovery disks, so i want to either leave that partition alone (in case i need to switch it back to windows down the road to sell it), or whatever.
I know i could just download windows to my PC, transfer the files to a flash drive, and put it on that way, but the recovery comes complete with drivers, etc which makes it a smoother and faster process. Oh, i cant make the recovery of windows b/c i need 7.xx GB of space, and my biggest flash drive is an 8GB which doesnt quite make it.SOOOOO - IF i install Ubuntu, will that recovery partition DEFINITELY be left alone? Or is there an easy way someone could suggest copying that partition without a 16GB drive? OR is there any way to use an external hard drive to copy that recovery partition on to?
I have only installed ubuntu once, maybe twice, but didnt care about partitions and wiped everything as requested by the install. (i reverted back because i couldnt navigate quickly installing and updating programs, but now have a windows laptop and want to be forced to learn linux on my netbook).any help is MUCH appreciated! I have an Ubuntu scratch that im dying to itch, but dont want to lose my windows recovery

I tried to install rawhide by enabling the rawhide repo and doing a yum update. Lets just say it didn't go so well. My system wont start the GUI when I start the computer. It just shows the Fedora boot animation and stays there. So anyway I need to reinstall Fedora 14. I wanted to reinstall Fedora without having to backup and restore all my data (my home directory). So I did some Googleing and found that if I had my home directory on a separate partition that I was set to go. All I had to do was format "/" and just tell it to use the "/home" partition I already had and not to format it and I that was it. So I went to try it myself and found that it was not as straight forward as it seemed. Well at least for me.
I clicked on "lv_root" assuming that was supposed to have "/" as its mount point. I clicked the edit button. I selected "/" as its mount point and told it to format it as ext4.Then I clicked on lv_home and clicked on the edit button. I made its mount point "/home" and clicked "ok".I clicked "Next" and I get this error "Bootable partitions cannot be on a logical volume". What do I need to do to fix this? I assume this has to do with the "lv_" at the beginning of the partition names.

I have a 160gb hard drive with no partitions. Ubuntu runs on the entire disc. I want to cut off 60gb from my file system as a storage drive without losing the data that i already have on it.
I don't want to reinstall Ubuntu and cannot afford to lose all my data. Is it possible to do so, without having to reinstall the OS.

I would like to resize my /home ( /dev/sdb6 ) partition - without losing data - to make room to create a swap partition (at the moment, I don't have any swap. Is it dangerous ?) IIRC, it was possible to change partition sizes from the install disk in repair mode (?) But I cannot find that repair mode on the 11.3 install disk. Has it been removed or is it somewhere deeper in the install or update process ?

My gateway netbook was dual booted with windows 7 and ubuntu netwbook.,I was attempting free up some space on my netbook and decided that the ubuntu partition was expendable.I deleted it and sufficient to say I now can't boot boot up, I just get an error message, can't remember exactly what it is.I am getting a new computer and would kind of like to be able to recover the files on the computer.I have a USB netbook boot drive and am wondering how I would be able to install ubuntu without loosing the files.I have the usb key plugged in am now at the partition stage of the installation.

I got a new laptop today (yay) with windows 7 on it. I want to keep a small windows partition, just in case I need it for something. Anyway, I know how to use fdisk, and am comfortable installing on a disk without data I need to maintain.. but this new computer came with 5 (!) windows partitions. I don't know where to start.
I don't mind reinstalling windows after partitioning if I have to, but I really don't want to screw up the recovery partition. Any clues on where to start or what to look for? Or what NOT to do?
It looks like "my computer" has two partitions listed (c: and d: ). I guess I could just take note of the size of these two partitions, free up the partitions that match in fdisk, then repartition that space and install everything.
I need to reboot to do that, so I'll edit with the information when I have it.

i 've an hp laptop with 2 120gb hdds. On hd1 there used to be vista plus the hp recovery partition and hd2 was for storage.When i moved to opensuse 11.1 as the primary OS some 3 years ago, i set it on hd2, with / , /home and swap partitions and left hd1 as is.
I have two questions.
first / seems to be out of space (i tried to install a gcc compiler and i got a warning). Is there anything i can do? Can i resize it on a live system? Can i delete/compress something on it safely?
Second: i currently use windows only for a tv card and a couple of old games so no need for 100 gb on this partition.Is it safe to repartition it? Partitioner says i should not partition on a live system but it appears not to be mounted?

I am having trouble logging into my ubuntu 11.04 desktop. When I type my username and password to login my screen goes blue, as if it is going to next show my desktop wallpaper, but then it loops back to the login screen. I had no idea why and so I went to ALT-F1 and typed in "df" and it turns out that my root partition is full. This is strange since I set aside 40GB for it and I didn't install anything or that many programs that would fill it up. Anyhow, is this fixable by booting to a live cd and using gparted to make root bigger or is there a better way to fix this?

I have an Asus EeePC 901, running Ubuntu 9.10. I'd like to upgrade it to 10.04. I don't want to reinstall, since I have a bunch of scripts and programs all set up.However, when I attempt to upgrade using sudo do-release-upgrade, I get an error asking me to free up another ~600MB on /.
My / is mounted on sda0, which is a 4GB SSD. I do not have 600MB worth of deletable stuff on /.I've emptied my trash, and done apt-get autoremove and apt-get clean.I do have plenty of space in /home, mounted on sda1 (a 16GB SSD).Is there some way I can tell apt-get to use a different download/temp directory?

Say I need to do: find / -name somefile.txt
And say root partition / is mounted on /dev/sda5; however, let's say I also have 250GB partitions (/dev/sda6, /dev/sda7) mounted in /media - AND another location that I cannot currently remember. Say, also, that I know the file I'm looking for is on /dev/sda5.
Obviously, the above command will also descend in /media and that other directory which represent the big partitions, wasting time in looking for the file in the wrong place.
Is there a way to instruct find (or other command) to search only / on /dev/sda5, and NOT to descend to directories if they are on different partitions ?

The RAID level 1 interested me because of its redundancy in both drives. And I successfully made it in a couple of partitions. But, I always did it after Linux installation. Then, I create both partitions, use 'mdadm' to create raidtab and RAID device (md0, for example) and then I format the RAID device with 'mkfs' and mount it.
Until there, it's all OK.
But my problem is to mirror ALL the hard disk, inclusive root partition. To do that, I guess I need no Linux installation, then create the RAID (md0, raidtab, etc) and after that install Linux in RAID device created.
But I'm new in Linux world and I have no idea how to do that.
I use Debian Lenny, so I need a solution that uses only the first DVD of this distribution.

I have some contiguous free space available next to where my root partition resides on the hard drive. I was thinking of resizing the root partition with gparted to take up this space, but it's kind of risky. I was wondering if there is another way to include this partition into my Linux partition without resizing? Like somehow link it in so that / will have more free space?

I installed the Centos 5.5 on a WM instance. Run out of space after doing the updates. It is very difficult to keep re-partitioning /
I tried to install a new instance but it doesn't let me configure the disc and it just goes and install the OS.
How can I use the good old installation options etc?
What happened to control? This became a control nightmare.

I have serwer Debian with my website. My provider splited the disc into 5GB partition for / and 495GB partition for /var. Everything was going ok for over two years but now I don't have enough memory on /. I'd like to increase the partition but the problem is that /var is just next to it so I can't easily change the end of the first one. I need some safe solution. It might be even just shrinking partition for /var, adding new one after if it helps anyhow (I have about 450GB free memory).

I have a question about LVM. My /dev/sda disk is partitioned into Windows NTFS on sda1, Linux /boot partition on sda2, and the Fedora 10 root (/) LVM partition is on sda3. I have moved my Windows XP to VMware on the Linux system and would like to add the sda1 partition to root LVM group.

l my root (/) partition has 11G free space and my /home is only left with 5g around and /usr has around 8g in my fedora 13 .So is there any possibility to "resize" the root partition and add it to home partition bcoz i see the opposite in the threads(resize home to add space to root).My home has nothin more than a movie which is 700MB and i've installed some new application yesterday. But it shows half of the space is almost used!!!
