General :: Pthreads - Structure Can Be Returned With Value
May 21, 2010
I am playing around with pthreads. This program however blows up.
#include <iostream>
#include <pthread.h>
using namespace std;
struct myStruct
{
int a;
string msg;
};
void * myProc(void *arg)
{
struct myStruct* str = new struct myStruct();
str->a = 10;
str->msg ="hi";
return (void*)str;
}
int main(int argc, char **argv)
{
pthread_t mythr;
int status ;
void *retVal;
struct myStruct* m_str;
status = pthread_create(&mythr,NULL,myProc,NULL);
status = pthread_join(mythr,&retVal);
cout<<"Status is"<<status<<endl;
m_str = (struct myStruct*)m_str;
cout<<"retval is "<<m_str->a<<" "<<endl;
return 0;
}
Can a structure be returned by a thread as its return value ?

In my code I want to have two different functions to be executed simultaneously (in parallel) in a single processor system. I tried to use pthreads but they happened to be executed one after another. I have heard about fork, some saying that its no longer recommended since its functions can be achieved by pthreads.

i think we can simulate preemption by using 2 different priority thread, am i true? I just try these scenario :
1. Create Thread A with priority 99 , SCHED_FIFO..
2. Create Thread B with priority 4 , SCHED_FIFO
Thread A started and doing some busy work.. I guess that Thread B wouldn't start until thread A finished, but I get thread B can run before Thread A finished (It just like a common task switching).. I'm sure my 2 thread has right priority. and if thread B is doing some work and if i yield it to thread A, it should preempt it but this doesnt happen, do someone kno wats happening?

I just started with Pthreads and don't really know much about it. I want to suspend pthreads but apparently, there is no such function as pthread_suspend. but I don't understand why we need both mutex and condition to suspend and resume a pthread. Is it possible to suspend and resume it without using conditions?

I have confusion regarding pthreads return value. All in short, is the is a valid return value ?
[source]
void * myThrRoutine(void *arg)
{
struct myStruct **myst = (struct myStruct**) arg;
cout<<"In thread "<<(*myst)->var<<(*myst)->msg<<endl;
int x = 20;
pthread_exit((void*)x);
}
[/source]
This seems to work fine on pthread_join , but I want to ensure it is not by chance.

I am trying to write a peer to peer application in C++ using pthreads library. There are few types of nodes that run in the program. The 'beacon' nodes form the core of the network. The ordinary nodes 'join' the network by sending join requests to the beacon node. So, my program runs till the join requests and responses are received. When I try to 'connect' using connect function from the socket library, I get a segfault. I am not sure if the segfault occurs for the connect function, because sometimes the program just runs to completion. It could be an issue related to threads or memory allocation.
When I run gdb, it shows me the following:
Code:
(gdb) run b2-n00.ini
Starting program: sv_node b2-n00.ini
servant:12600> [New LWP 1]
[New LWP 2]
[New LWP 3]
[New LWP 4]
[New LWP 5]
[New LWP 6]
Before Exiting[LWP 1 exited]
procfs: fetch_registers, get_gregs line 3768, /proc/23952/lwp/1: No such file or directory.

I have a program that uses both Pthreads and OpenMP. Basically, 2 threads (Thread A and B) are created using Pthreads to do work, and in Thread A, OpenMP is used to parallelize a for loop.If I have a global variable that is accessed by the OpenMP threads and also Thread B, can I use the lock in OpenMP to ensure I have no race conditions?

I have created two threads:
Thread 1 and thread 2
In the main thread, i have put up a timer which generates a signal periodically when it expires, which reults in execution going to signal catcher function.when this function is invoked, under certain condition it goes to thread 1 and under another condition it goes to thread 2. The problem lies here that when it goes to thread2,i have a loop to process but it doesnt come out of the loop and hence from thread2, even though timer has expired.

Something I find myself doing a lot is running a find command and then editing all of them in vi, which looks something like this:
> find . "*.txt"
./file1.txt
./file2.txt
./path/to/file3.txt
> vi ./file1.txt ./file2.txt ./path/to/file3.txt
Is there a clever & simple way to do this all in one command line?

I've the following file structure that I would like to add to git.
Code:
These are big directories and I don't need them all checked out. I only need the src directory. After I commit the files in the /app/src, it must be pushed to a remote site.
If I want only to checkout the src directory to work on, it's important to create a special file structure in git? For example, instead of doing git init on app general directory, should I do git init on all subdirectories?
Is it possible to checkout only part of a file structure in git?

So I'm trying to teach myself to write programs for unix in c. I am currently creating a program, and I need to pass a struct through a socket
The struct I want to pass has two types in it, one enum and one union of two other structs. These two other structs each contain an int and a char variablename[256] array.
gcc won't let me just pass the struct using write(pipefd[1], struct, size_of_struct) since the struct is not a char buffer. So that's my question...how does one go about passing a struct?

I am using RHEL 4.4. Last time when I reboot my server it generate an error, and mention to run fsck command in repair mode. When I ran, this fix some problems, but after that it generate an error of gdm and X11 services after showing login sceen and getting user name and passwod. But I login via putty from a remote system. So, when I tried to make changes like create directory or file or even tried to make any change in any file it generate an error that " you can not make changes in read only file system".

diff has the ability to trasverse directory structures. cmp has the ability to manage binary files.
I'm looking for something which allows me to compare a directory's contents, including files and subdirectories, and so a binary comparison.
Any suggestions, scripts, etc. which may be of help?
Some of my directories are huge, with huge (image) files in them.

I have used linux for a web server but only installed a couple items on top of the OS but would like to begin using linux more often on my own home machine. However, I also like to keep things clean and organized, and know what is going on when I do something. I have some sample C scripts for network programming, and they came as a downloadable package with a readme including the make / configure instructions to get it all set up, and then I can compile individual scripts as needed.
I was wondering - when I run make and those first few commands - where does it all go? Will all the new activity be confined to the folder I am in, meaning I can easily remove it all by simply deleting the folder when I am done (I won't want all this sample networking stuff forever, you know). Or, does it get placed into other directories throughout the file system?
I know when installing some apps that the files are placed in directories such as usr/bin and the like - my assumption is this happens when running make and make install commands - if so, how do we get rid of them when finished?
I just want to keep the system somewhat clean if possible, and the very least like to know what is being installed and to where - and have the option to remove it easily at a later date if I choose to do so.

Is there a way to force rsync to not make directories in its destination directory; ie, to simply dump all of the files from the source directory directly into the destination without copying any of the folders that the files were originally in? I tried --no-dirs, but that seems to only be for empty directories.

Basically I need to rename a bunch of .doc files using the for-structure and the mv command (w/ wildcards) in bash. I guess this would be a bit easier if I'd use the rename command, but since this is a school assignment of sorts I need to use for & mv. The .doc files are named "1filename.doc", "2filename.doc" etc. And I've got to rename them to "aaa_1filename.doc", "aaa_2filename.doc", "aaa_3filename.doc" and so on. Tried to dabble quite a bit with the for and mv commands, basically just got a bunch of errors. Every damn time. For 2 hours. The most common error was "mv: missing destination file operand after ..."

What is the best and simplest way to compare two directory structures without actually comparing the data in files. This works fine:
diff -qr dir1 dir2
But it's really slow because it's comparing files too. Is there a switch for diff or another simple cli tool to do this?

I will be doing actual development and testing on the same machine as the server. It is a single user machine in the sense that I will be the only one working on the machine. There will be multiple hosted languages, specifically PHP and RoR while possibly expanding later. I'd like the setup to translate well to a production environment. With those 3 things in mind there are a couple of things I've had in the back of mind.Seeing as it's a single user machine I haven't been able to decide whether or not I should be working on things out of my home directory or if they should be located outside of it.I'm feeling that outside of a user directory would be better as it would translate better to a production environment, but I'm also not sure if that will come with any permission annoyances or concerns seeing as I'll be working on the same machine. Hosting multiple languages seems like it may be a bit quirky. With PHP I've found you're generally just dumping the project somewhere in the document root where as something like a Rails app you have the entire project and you only want the public directory in the document root.

I need to recreate in a local folder called /distro/fedora/ the full directory tree (including eventually hidden files, symlinks, etc.) contained in the .iso file just downloaded (Fedora-15-i686-Live-Desktop.iso).
I understand I can mount the ISO image using something like this:
mount -ro loop /path/to/image.iso /mnt
but then, which would be the best way to get a copy exact of what I see underneath /mnt in to /distro/fedora ?
cp, tar, clobber?

i have a car stereo that reads a USB drive with all my music on it, however to sort through the music it uses a method of finding folders containing music, then displaying them all in a list. i find this interface annoying because in order to sort the music by artist i have to go and manually move it out of the album folders by hand, this takes a long time for 11+ GB of music so i was trying to use the linux CLI to quicken the process. use a command like this
Code:
mv /media/usb/music/*/*/* /media/usb/music/*/
but for some reason this moves all my music into the last folder alphabetically in my drive, the music is all pre-arranged like this /media/usb/music/artist/album/song
