General :: "No Possible Mount Location - Not Authorized"

Nov 29, 2010

I am trying to mount my hd on ubuntu by I receive this message "No possible mount location - Not Authorized". It happened after some upgrades on system, and the sound stoped too.

here is my fstab file:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier
# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name
# devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).

Fedora :: 14 Not Authorized To Mount USB Flash

Nov 9, 2010

New install of Fedora 14, all updates applied. If a USB flash drive is plugged in, get a Not Authorized message when Nautilus tries to mount the drive. The drive does show up in Places in Nautilus. From a terminal window, if you 'su' to 'root', then:

mkdir /mnt/usb
fdisk -lu
mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb

WILL mount the device, can 'cd' into directories, 'ls' to list files, 'cat' the files -- all OK -- so the device itself is fine. But from a regular user account, it will not mount the drive. Did 'chown' on /mnt/usb and /dev/sdb1 so that the user owns everything. The same 'mount' command as above gives the message "mount: only root can do that". Disabled SELinux as a test -- same result. Searched around but only similar problem was in this thread (buried in the middle): [URL] That's where the sequence above was suggested, which does work as 'root'. Where else would permissions need to be set? And what changed? This worked automatically in previous versions of Fedora

Ubuntu :: Unable To Mount - Not Authorized Error With CDs And USB Drives?

May 13, 2010

I am running 10.04 Lucid Lynx 64 bit. Whenever I insert a CD or USB flash drive, I get the error "Unable to mount - Not Authorized". I can, however, mount these things by using the mount command from the console as root. I suspect that either the component of Lucid which is responsible for automounting has a bug, or there is some kind of permissions bug with the way Ubuntu sets up the primary user. Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a workaround? Should I file a bug report?

General :: Fdisk Displays No Results - Unable To Mount Location

Mar 5, 2011

I've just installed Debian 6 on an old pc so i can use it as a file server. As far as i know installation went fine but it didn't detect my Edimax wireless network card. The problem I'm having is using FDISK. I tried to explore my CD drive and i got an error message "Unable to mount location". I wanted to see if there was an installer to install my network card becuase the manufacturer says it's supported by Linux. When i use the su - command and try using fdisk -l it just displays the command prompt and no hdd info. I tried it the other day becuase I want to mount all the physical drives and one logical volume. This is only the first step for me configuring this computer as a server and i'm suck already and ready to give up and try Windows server (whcih i don't really want to do).Has anyone got any ideas how i can mount my cdrom and why FDISK isn't working?

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Share : Get An Error Message "unable To Mount Location, Failed To Mount Windows Share"?

Jan 22, 2011

I have installed ubuntu 10.10 and the Samba addon to configure my shares to my Windows terminals. This is what I got

Firewall off (utf disabled)

Internal Sata /dev/sda1 (EXT4 FS)

External USB HDD /dev/sdb1 mounted at /media/SG1500GB (EXT4 FS)

I have two shares

1. //home/test - Which I can see and access with no problems (can't write to it though even though I set the share as writable?, but, I can read from it). This is available to everyone. My windows terminal can see this folder and access it. This is on my main 80GB internal drive /dev/sda1.

2. //media/SG1500GB/Music. I set this up for everyone full access and I can see it at all my Windows machines but,I can't get into the folder. Windows keeps giving me an error stating network path not found.I also try to access it via the Nautilus (Places/Network/system/music) and get an error message "unable to mount location, Failed to mount windows share". This drive is mounted per the disk utility.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Mount Location?

Feb 22, 2010

I have some shared folders on my laptop, most of which I can access from any other machine in the house. But one returns an error every time from any PC. I open the Places menu, select network, choose the machine and get a set of shared folders. But when I try to open this one I get an error message "Unable to mount location. Failed to mount Windows Share". All the machines are running Ubuntu 9.04 or better. No problem with any other shared folder, and the permissions are the same for all.

I worked around it by creating another folder, copying everything across, and sharing it with the usual perfect result.

Ubuntu Networking :: Not Able To Mount Location - Fix It?

Jul 30, 2011

I am having problems sharing my external hard drive.

It is plugged into my Ubuntu LTS media centre computer and is just a standard USB Seagate HDD. It works fine when I access it from the same computer it is plugged into, both in Ubuntu and Windows machines.

I have set it up as a shared resource using the shares-admin app and at the same time, shared the home folder of that machine. I can access the home folder fine from my laptop over the network but when I try to access the external HDD, I get the following error msg: 'Unable to mount location - failed to mount Windows share'.

My laptop has the same OS as the media centre - Ubuntu LTS 10.04 Lucid. I am trying to access the share via Places > Network. I'm not sure why it comes under Windows shares because neither machine has Windows on. The network is a Wi-fi home network.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Mount Location

Nov 29, 2010

I have two Windoze 7 laptops (i know, i'm evil) one Windoze Vista desktop, one Android 7" tablet, one Windows mobile 6.1 PDA and one Ubuntu 10.10 laptop. everything can read and write to everything except for the Ubuntu machine. i Can't see the Ubuntu machine from windoze or the droid, and like wise, my windoze and droid can not see the Ubuntu laptop. I keep getting the error "UNABLE TO MOUNT LOCATION", "Failed to retrieve share list from server."

this is what I have tried. Followed about 20 videos on you tube (to no avail.) Edited my smb.conf file (to no avail.) Uninstalled then reinstalled samba (to no avail.) Smashed my head into the screen several times (to no avail.)I was able to get 9.10 & 10.4 working O.K. But 10.10 has got me stumped. I did a search through this forum, but nothing seems to work. I don't restart Samba, I restart the laptop (better?)

Fedora :: LVM For BAPCKUPPC - Create A Link To The New Location And What To Mount

Aug 26, 2011

I have read that it is best to have a volume LVM set up to contain the BackupPC data that it generates when backing a machine(s) up. By default BackupPC stores the back up data in /var/lib/BackupPC and there is information on how to create a link to the new location and what to mount on the new dedicated LVM What I do not know is how to create a new LVM for the BackupPC files/data on the machine I have. Currently I have a machine running fedora 15 64 bit. It has BackupPC installed via yum but I have not run it as yet. I believe that I have the necessary dependencies installed The machine has two hard drives, one a 80 GB and the other a 500 GB. Currently Gparted is showing;

/dev/sdb1 ext4 /Boot 500MiB
/dev/sdb2 Lvm2 74.04 GiB (in properties it says it is not mounted)
/dev/sdb1 Lvm2 465.76 GiB (in properties it says it is not mounted)

When the machine was loaded with Fedora it was set up as 1 partition and was just a standard out of the box Fedora install accepting the defaults. how do i go about setting up a LVM that I can expand later if necessary to hold the BackupPC data? I saw in one post some where that person call the group Main. how to" or provide a set by set guide as to how to achieve this. Or provide advise o the best way to set the machine up. I do not intend to run anything else on the machine. It is there to back up a server (Fedora 14), A general use machine machine (Fedora 15) and a windows machine (XP).
