General :: Networking - How Much Bandwidth Program Process Use

Jun 8, 2011

On occasion I see my bandwidth usage using the gnome system monitor going up to 300kbit/s. I just cant figure out what is causing it. I want to know what process or program in using my network like that? I do ssh into different machines and servers, where I would really like to beable to monitor bandwidth usage. It would be very useful to know which utilities people use to see what bandwidth is being used and by which applications / programs / processes / or threads. I don't even know where to start looking. The two small programs I have found are insufficient. bmon and bwm-ng. And tools like wireshark (packet sniffers) are over kill. I would like some thing in the middle, preferably text console based.

Feb 9, 2010

Is there a way to get a summary of how much bandwidth a given process used on Linux after the process completes? I do not want a monitor, I want something I can look at after the task has completed..

Ideally something like the "time" command or a profiler, but for network usage.

Networking :: Tools For Monitoring Network Bandwidth Usage Of Program/port?

Dec 8, 2010

I have a third party program (tightvnc) which I want to monitor and detect if it loses a connection with a client. I don't care if the client has the program open but isn't doing anything with it, I only want to know if the actual TCP connection is lost.

Since TCP takes forever to die on it's own I was thinking the best way to detect if a connection is lost is by bandwidth the bandwidth on the tcp port allocated to the VNC connection. Are there any tools built in to redhat (RHEL 5.2) which I could use to do this? Since I don't have full control of the operating system I would prefer to use built in tools rather then trying to get a new tool installed.

Fedora Networking :: Finding The Upcoming Bandwidth And Specify The Bandwidth Rateto Classes

Nov 18, 2010

I created a the class like this for shaping the packets with a specified bandwidth rate.....

tc qdisc del dev eth0 root
tc qdisc add dev eth0 root handle 1: htb default 15
tc class add dev eth0 parent 1:0 classid 1:1 htb rate 750kbit ceil 750kbit
tc class add dev eth0 parent 1:1 classid 1:3 htb rate 600kbit ceil 750kbit prio 0

For Our Requirement:-

I dont want to specify the bandwidth rate strictly like this rate750kbit ceil 750kbit,based on whatever speed is coming which should allocate the bandwidth rate for particular class...I need one application for finding the upcoming bandwidth & Is any other method is there for specify the bandwidth rate in a classes.

General :: Running Program In Background In Child Emulator Process

Aug 26, 2009

I wonder how one can, if at all, run an X program in the background *in an emulator sub-shell process*. What I mean is to launch a program in an emulator, e.g, by xterm -e gedit

but with gedit (in this example) running in the background from inside the xterm sub-process, so that the xterm will accept other commands. In the above, gedit will run in the foreground, and of course, if you do
xterm -e gedit &

then xterm will run in the background, not gedit. In short, I would like to achieve the same thing as "gedit &" as you manually do in xterm, but from another shell. What I aim to do is write an X init script to achieve this result (to have the emulator open and a program or two running from it, in the background, at the X startup).

General :: Networking - Get Single Bandwidth Usage Sample?

Aug 27, 2011

What I want to do is to write a script that gathers some information (like cpu temperature and bandwidth usage) and logs it into a file. I can't figure out how to get a single sample of the current used bandwidth: I've found that there's plenty of tools to get this information from command line, but the majority of them are curses based, so I can't take their output to put it into a file. Among these I've found bmon, that has a nice ascii output. The problem is that this output is updated constantly, while what I want is a single "sample" per program call.

Is there a way to get this done with bmon or someone knows another program to accomplish this task?

Software :: Execute A Program As The Very Last Step Of Boot Process?

Feb 2, 2011

I want to execute a program at the very last step of Linux boot process. For Debian based Linux distro that uses BSD boot process, I came up with 2 solutions:

1) I should somehow call my program from the /etc/rc.local script (although is this the last step of the boot process?)

2) Use the "multi_end" and "sysinit_end" hooks for executing it at the end of rc.multi rc.sysinit respectively (I don't know how to do it though).

Ubuntu Servers :: Program/Process Route To Specific Network Device?

Jul 30, 2010

Is there a way to bind specific programs to specific network devices (not IPs, since I have dynamic IPs)?

For example, I wish for irssi to route through eth0 and w3m to route through eth1. Keep in mind these devices have dynamic IPs, so I cannot attached them to an IP.

The solution cannot be accomplished through route since route pivots on IPs not devices.

I gone through above methodogies ,when i finish one methods(IGI/PTR) i came to know, one application should run in client side and another application should run in server side (i.e,) Internet Service Provider side,

In IGI/PTR method ./ptr-client.c & ./ptr-server.c is there .,if we want available bandwidth,I Should run ./ptr-client.c (in myside)correspondingly ./ptr-server.c then only we wil get a availble bandwidth...

My need is without run any application on the server side ./ptr-server.c like that, but I should develop the application only on client side (in my routerside based on linux)..

1:whether it is possible to get the available bandwidth run application in client side only?.if possible. how i implement the code in client side( only )for getting the available bandwidth ...whether any source code is available?...
