View 1 RepliesWhen I try to play an audio CD, both VLC and mplayer complain that it can't open "cdda://".
I made sure that I'm a member of the "optical" group, but still nothing.
I recently upgraded to slackware 13, and I discovered that the only things I can do audio wise is play audio CD's and adjust mixer volumes. I have a DELL C600 with a Maestro 3i soundcard. I am able to use the laptops advanced volume controls and I even played with the builtin KDE4 mixer over and over again. I have also unloaded and reloaded drivers. Is there a step I am missing? I even tried to test a wave file with "aplay", and that program locks up until I hit ctrl+c.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI want to listen to this audio file: [URL] but my real player 11.0.0.4028 gold desn play it, it says that there is a codec 28_8 missing, I go to relaplayer page, download the last release available for linux systems, but the message is the same : audio codec missing and doesn't play the audio.
I havev tried to play the audio with smplayer (not luck), vlc can play the audio but the pause button doesn't work so I have to listen the entire audio all the time I stop it playing. Is there any audio player capable od reproducing in the proper way this audio in ubuntu? No one of my video players totem, smplayer, realplayer or vlc are capable of playing this video: [URL]
to start off, i'll post the specs of the machine:
dell inspiron e1505
3.2 gb ram
1.86 ghz intel core duo
ati x1400 gfx
opensuse 11.4 kde 32 bit.
okay, here are the details: can't play any audio with amarok when desktop effects are enabled because the minute a window is moved, it will distort the audio. even when disabling desktop effects, some applications still cause this. can't play videos videos even with desktop effects disabled because of the same reason.
i just switched from ubuntu and when i ran version 11.04, i had to disable kms to do anything. i tried on opensuse 11.4 and the audio was flawless but the gfx went all to hell.
i am a newbie in Linux. i have installed fedora 10.. whenever i try to play audio/video files in totem, it says additional plugins are required..MPEGAV-1MPEGAV-2is missing.
View 10 Replies View RelatedA week ago I used Update Manager to update Xubuntu from 8 to 10.04. Update manager completed properly. However audio stopped working in firefox but video worked ok. Using other audio players like banshee worked fine. Worse, Firefox ran slow as molasses. I tried re-installing (using Synaptic Package Manager) the Adobe Flash Plug-in in Firefox. No change. I tried re-installing Firefox. No change. Yesterday I used update manager and got about 40 updates, including updates to firefox and linux. After these updates, Firefox sped up nicely but now the video and audio are both blocked.
Update: subsequently I abandoned Xubuntu and installed Ubuntu 10.10. Adobe Flash is properly installed and audio works fine in the audio player and video player but not in Firefox. Tried installing Chromium and Midori and each browser has same problem - no audio. My sound icon is properly set to output connector -> analogue output. The version of firefox is 3.8, and that version works fine in Windows.
When I play any video/audio file in ubuntu i get the error"An error ocurred. The playback of this movie requires a MPEG-4 AAC decoder plugin which is not installed. The playback of this movie requires a H.264 decoder plugin which is not installed."I have'nt installed any audio video player software.. i was playing the file with the default inbuilt player.

View 2 Replies View RelatedFirst my setup: Hardware Genuine AMD Athlon - 512 mg Mem - Nvida card & latest drivers - 80gb & 40gb drives - dvd read only & cdrw.
OS: Ubuntu 10.04 - tried standard desktop then the alt version now back to standard desktop.
Problem: Both optical drives recognise data disks and show them on the desktop. The dvd drive recognises any dvd and not only shows it on the desktop but also flashes up a requester box asking me which program I would like to use to play it. Nothing happens when I insert a music cd in either drive. Rhythm Box Music Player does not show a music cd available to play but does however show my iTouch when I connect it via usb. Btw iTouch is shown on the desktop when connected. What have I done: Fstab had no entries for either drive so I've researched and entered a line for each. The dvd fs is entered as iso9660,udf. The cdrw is using "proc" as a file system as it's the only thing that will show as mounted in Mtab. All else fails. Both drives show up in System/Administration/Disk Utility (irrespective of Fstab entries), therefore the system can see them. Also investigating through the Terminal shows both drives. how to listen to music cds on ubuntu 10.04. I wish to save my music then upload the same to my iTouch. It all worked so well in 8.04.

The problem is that none of the video players doesn't play video, they show only black window and play audio.
I have Fedora 11 Leonidas, fully up-to-date.
I have installed rpmfusion and livna repository.
I have installed following packages:
When I try to play video with totem, it doesn't output any error, but just doesn't play video.
with mplayer:
xine and kaffeine just say:

I tried several different files, which works perfectly in windows and ubuntu.
I installed windows binary codecs for mplayer to /usr/lib/codec/
i got a Thinkpad R61 with a Matshita drive and, as the title says, I cannot play audio cds. After inserted a cd, syslog shows:

I did't know if this is an hardware issue so i tried an external dvd drive but i got the same errors. To play cds i tried different programs: xmms2, cdcd, mplayer and sound-juicer and different cds (all original if this matter) but without luck. I also tried a different kernel version, actually i'm using a custom one, using a debian precompiled ones (package linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64) but again without luck. Here a relevant kernel configuration:

I use Slackware full-time on my personal machine, a Lenovo T61, and I've used Slackware happily for the past 15 years. I've always been able to find answers to my questions by searching, but this time I'm stumped and find myself posting my first question ever to a help site. Recently installed Slackware 13.0 out of the box, which has KDE 4.2.4. I've added myself as a regular user, and made sure I'm a member of the audio and cdrom groups. I've configured sound with alsaconf and alsamixer, and sound works fine when playing digital files (audio and video). I can mount data CDs and DVDs, and read them with Dolphin. When I insert an audio CD, I can't get any application to see it, except for the "Last plugged in device" widget, which only gives me K3B as an option to rip the CD - no option to play the CD. If I allow K3B to launch, that application can see the tracks. KDE 4 does not have good support for playing audio CDs. I've seen various suggestions for fixes that relate to udev, HAL and adding actions. I'm out of my league here, as I'm a casual user, not one who can dive into these details. My guess is that udev is OK because K3B can see the audio CD. When I look at /usr/share/apps/solid/actions, I see the following:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2871 2009-03-26 07:42 test-predicate-openinwindow.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2385 2009-04-02 23:16 k3b_videodvd_rip.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 861 2009-04-02 23:16 k3b_create_data_project_from_blank_medium.desktop

There are no actions that appear to relate to start playing a CD, so I think this is where the problem lies, but I'm not sure, and if it is, I don't know how to fix it. Things have gotten a lot more complicated over the years...Playing an audio CD should be a simple task, and I'm embarrassed that it's taking so long to debug this problem.
I listen to streaming audio a lot. All types of music, news, talk radio, etc.I have found that the Totem movie player is the most reliable player. Rythmbox is good too but seams to drop the streams a little more that Totem. The main problem with Totem is that I find the play list kind of clunky to use.
Q1: Are there better players for streaming audio?
A lot of radio stations now open in there own "players". I don't like all of the advertisements and other bandwidth eating crap in these "players".
Q2: Is there a way to get the URL of the stream from one of these "players" and play it on Totem or Rythmbox?
I went to the record store a couple of days ago and bought some CDs. I was able to pop in the first one and rip it no problem. Then, I put in a different CD and I have been greeted with all sorts of nothing. I put the original CD back in and I get nothing. Some example error messages....
When I open Sound Juicer, I am told: "Sound Juicer could not read the track listing on this CD. Reason: Cannot access CD: The specified location is not mounted"
When I open Kaffeine: "Cannot find input plugin for MRL [cdda:/]"
When I try to view the disc in dolphin:"Device does not have read permissions for this account. Check the read permissions on the device."
I'm running Fedora and Gnome on a laptop and I'd like to play an audio file. I installed xmms and the mp3 plugin via yum, and started xmms amd tried to play the file. The progress bar advances as if the file is playing, but there's no sound in my headphones. I do have gnome volume slider bar set to the highest value. I tried running alsamixer and the volume is set to the highest level (however +/- causes alsamixer to exit, and not change the volume level like the F1-Help page says). What can I do?I tried the Gnome filesystem browser and clicked on mp3 or wav file which brings up the totem music player. Again, the progress bar advances as if the file is being played, but no sound.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI've just installed suse 11.3 and installed the necessary mp3/ogg etc packages for Amarok. But amarok just keeps crashing when i try to play an audio cd, mp3 or radio stream. something about segmentation fault, but not enough data for a bug report. Kaffeine plays audio like a charm, but amarok seems only able to crash. I really hate any not working programs on my computer, so what can i do to solve this?
solving meaning:
1) get rid of amarok, but keep kaffeine playing every format.
2) fix amarok so it plays audio.
I am really a noob to linux and not a big fan of the terminal.
I am a longtime Fedora user. Moved over to OpenSUSE 11.2 after Fedora 13 won't install on my old hardware. I am unable to play DVD or Audio CD using VLC. I have OpenSUSE 11.2 with Gnome desktop installed.

I am having trouble running audio cd's in my second ubuntu 9.10 machine. However normal cd's run in the drive and I have tested the cd's on my first machine.
Under computer the cd drive icon disappears.
I was wondering what most xubuntu users use to play audio CDs in XFCE. My wife's laptop runs XFCE, and I had a time this last weekend getting it to actually play a CD correctly. It had been configured to load CDs in "listen" audio player, but as far as I can tell listen doesn't even play CD audio. There was nothing in the menu that allowed loading a disc.I tried setting it to Totem, which worked ok until the first track ended. It then stopped, and there was no way to make it continue and play the second track, or get a track listing. Odd, since it has an option for audio CD in the menu.Next I tried mplayer, which worked for a while, but had to be started from the command line since I couldn't get a disc to load from the GUI. After a couple of attempts at this, mplayer locked up the whole desktop.
Next I tried VLC, since it usually sweeps in and saves the day when all else fails. Aside from the annoyance of having to make about six to eight clicks to get an audio CD playing, it did work except that the audio skipped badly and after a few minutes it just died and wouldn't play any more.I finally found a program that worked: KSCD. It's a KDE application designed solely for the purpose of playing audio CDs, and it worked flawlessly.I don't have a problem running KDE apps on XFCE if I have to, but I just think it's odd I had so much trouble getting a program that would reliably do something so straightforward and standard, and wondered if I'd missed something obvious that would have been a better solution.
Through the command prompt, mainly wav files, wanted to see if there is any way to get this done? That would be the pc speaker on the board, I can get it to beep at frequencies.

I think movie player starts up and promptly crashes. I tried starting the program manually and asking it to play the DVD. The program crashed and "vanished before my eyes". Oh well! another nvidia story. I dual booted and even Windows Media Player (latest version), refused to play the DVD, complaining of some security mismatch or something to do with the video card driver. I downloaded and installed VLC, windows version and all went well. Returning to Ubuntu, I found that the Linux version of VLC failed. (I have installed the proprietary drivers)

I run opensuse 11.1 64 bit with KDE, and I have never been able to get the CD player working. Either it does not load, or once in awhile it also shows a message saying something like "cd player not configured", - which is odd because Suse is able to use it for installing additional programs and such from the Suse Dvd. I am also quite new in this, my first Opensuse distribution is the current.
