General :: Install/Uninstall ITunes With WINE
Sep 1, 2010
I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my husband's laptop. He insists that I install iTunes. Wine comes with the 10.04 release. I downloaded iTunes 9.2.1.5(32x) and it appeared to install ok. It said it was successful. However, immediately upon the 'installation successful' notification, another window popped up that said, "iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error 7 (Windows error 126).
Whenever I try to open iTunes, this error message pops up. I used the WINE uninstall option for iTunes, however, the window pops up giving the option to either repair or uninstall, and when I click uninstall it appears to go through the process and even says it did - only to discover the fine print telling me that it "installed" the program sucessfully. This is very frustrating. I cannot seem to get the program to uninstall.
I found a thread that said to delete the files manually, but I don't know how to do this. I need to uninstall iTunes and reinstall it and make it work.

I just got a new iphone (yay me) but later realised that as I have Ubuntu, it is very difficult to get itunes installed on it.
Having said that, I've got Wine installed and attempted to download itunes 7.something and even though the whole process worked, it appears that when I try to access itunes the whole screen goes black and then if I scroll across the screen with my mouse it lights up various bits of what's behind the black screen and then after a while it tells me that it cannot access itunes at all...
So I thought, perhaps I should uninstall itunes, but in doing that it still appeared in my wine folder, so I uninstalled wine, which still appeared in my Applications list, so I edited my applications list and then tried to re-install wine from scratch (I know I sound dumb already - but I was desperate ok!!!). So now wine is installed on my computer somewhere but it now doesn't show up in my Applications list at all and I can't seem to get it back on there - any suggestions there would also help...
But my main objective is to try and uninstall itunes properly (maybe from the terminal window - but I don't know how to even do that) and attempt to re-install it to see if it works again.
I need to do this in order to sync my iphone. Cannot seem to do it with Amarok as I don't have Installer.Apps on my iphone, and cannot get THAT without syncing it with itunes to begin with....

I read somewhere that you could use W.I.N.E to run iTunes in Linux (In my case, Ubuntu 10.10) I installed W.I.N.E, and downloaded the iTunes .exe, I was just wondering how to install iTunes in W.I.N.E.

whether iTunes will work through WINE in Ubuntu? Or is it not that simple? The reason I ask is because I have one iPod left (my wifes) and I need itunes for this, but I want to be on Linux from now on. Am I stuck? Will I always need windows? Or can I really escape the circle of evil licensed software! (who doesn't love some over dramatics

I cant seem to get iTunes to work no matter what I try, I installed WINE and various versions of iTunes, depending on what the guide that im following tells me to do. I usually get most of the way through and then something that i'm suppose to put into the terminal doesn't work. Itunes sometimes freezes the computer when i try and use it, and sometimes it gets to the point where it says something about not being able to work because qucktime wont work and i have to reinstall itunes, which i try to do, which does nothing.
I have a computer with a 64 bit processor, and an ipod touch. I am willing to go to whichever version of Ubuntu that works best with whichever version of itunes, i don't have anything important saved so going to a different version of the OS isn't a big deal. I have to have itunes because I have to back up my music onto something.
So, which version of Ubuntu is best with itunes (i have ubuntu 9.10) and has anyone used a guide that is proven to work recently? If their easer method of getting my music onto my computer, im open to that as well.

I got the XP 32 bit newest version of iTunes from the iTunes website. I got the newest version of Wine from the Ubuntu Software Center. I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10
So when I install iTunes it seems to work because it goes through the whole install process. But when I click the iTunes icon to launch it I Get a little box with this error message:
Apple Application Support was not found
Apple Application Support is required to run iTunes. Please uninstall iTunes, then install iTunes again.
Error 2 (Windows error 2)
So what can I do to fix this? I already uninstalled then re installed iTunes like the message says to do but I still keep getting the same error.

I've had Wine issues from the start. iTunes barely worked as a player, couldn't get it to put anything on my iPod. Now AIM doesn't work at all. It starts to come up then has "Internal errors - invalid parameters received" and is forced to close.?
I know there are other IM programs that run in Linux, I'm currently using Pidgin and I like it, it's just you can't do some of the AIM things like Audio chat { I know it's coming eventually } or image share where both IMers can see the image and not have to do a file transfer. I'd just like to be able to run AIM via Wine.

Im considering buying a 2nd gen apple tv and using home sharing to load movies onto it from my computer. Im running Ubuntu 11.4 and using the latest version of Wine to use iTunes 10. iTunes runs decently fine w/ a couple of small bugs (screen turns temporarily black, laggy, etc.) so im okay with that. The real problem is that my music isnt playing at all. I mean i can load it onto itunes but i cant listen to it. Combine that with the lag and it can get a little irritating.even with the inability of listening to music and the lag in the program, would i be able to stream content to my aTV w/out any bugs or no. I dont want to watch or listen to any of that content on my computer, just on my aTV but I am wondering if this inability would affect the playback on the apple tv. I dont even want to sync any ipods or anything like that, just sync the aTV (if even needed) for setup and use home sharing to listen to music, watch movies and tv shows, etc. on my apple tv w/out any frame rate drops or hitches or anything like that.

Lot of questions about WINE... When I'm done I'm going to make a HOWTO so that others can do what I did It's hard work, but I'm nearly done. The last problem I'm having is the WINE menu on GNOME won't show up after a install of WINE from a .deb package (it usually does). This was after I compiled WINE from source and removed it with "make uninstall" and "rm -rf /.wine".So now I installed the WINE from a deb package and the Wine menu entry is not showing up.I've tried re-installing Wine and rebooting my PC but nothing seems to work.

I install wine with this as regular user:
Then to uninstall I do this as root:
Now if I try to install again it say this:
Code:
Warning ! wine binary (still) found, which may indicate a (conflicting) previous installation. You might want to abort and uninstall Wine first. (If you previously tried to install from source manually, run 'make uninstall' from the wine root directory)
We need to install Wine as the root user. Do you want us to build Wine, 'su root' and install Wine?
Enter 'no' to build Wine without installing:
Why it say conflicting previous installation? "make uninstall" not work?
