When I connect to my linux server via FTP, my base folder upon login is not my user home directory, but instead '/www'.'/www' belongs to user root and one of the secondary groups for my user account.I am connecting via SFTP, using my username/password, and without setting any default root directories. I get the same behavior in multiple clients (Dreamweaver/Cyberduck), both active/passive connect modes.
View 1 RepliesI have a secondary disk which holds a /home directory structure from a previous install of Linux. I installed a new version on a new primary drive and mounted this secondary drive as the new /home. Problem is, even though the users are the same names and I can access the home directories for the users, I cannot login directly to their home directories, as I get the following error: -

Now, since the usernames are correct and the users are in the passwd file with the correct home directory paths, could it be user ID's that are different or something else? It's not as though I cannot access the home directories for the users, simply that I cannot log directly into them from a login prompt.
I'm developing an application in which one user must run java software that I'm compiling as another user. I wanted to give user A permission to see the bin direcory of my workspace, which is in the home directory of user B. I was wondering how can this be done? I gave the bin direcotry full read/execute premissions, but since it's in my home directory user A can't navigate to it.
I know there are a few ways I could get around the problem but they arn't very elegant. I was wondering if there is a simple method for giving a user access to a specific directory without giving access to all the parent directories. I tried symbolic link but user A still can't access it, and a hard link to a directory isn't allowed in Linux. I don't feel like making a hard link to every single file in the bin directory, and I'm not sure that would work anyways, since every recompile overwrites them.
i'm new to linux and just installed Ubuntu and decided to play around with it. i just executed

Addendum: I have also now noticed that when i log in and log back in i have the option to login as 'test' but it prompts me for a password which i did not set :s
Trying to configurate gadmid-bind, I change the user and group of my entire filesystem, I archive some advance getting all back but for now,sudo leave me with a problem about guid, i changed sudoers to root againg, but i don't get all back.I dosen't have network connection, because nm-applet dosen't start on my user, and when i run on a xserver with root user it give me: The device is not ready.

Before I had a router that only went up to 100 Base T and I would setup one box with linux running proftpd. On the other box,I would use win xp pro and use firefox to ftp into the other box and download a file. Download speeds went up to 11.2 MB/sec. Now when I switched routers, I expected something like 120 MB/sec but I'm only getting 5.3 MB/sec. What do I need to change?

Root, which obviously has access to everything, and two other users that each own a website.For these two users, their website is located in their respective home folder in an extra folder they each have Read, Write & Execute permissions on. Now, when I log in, it says there are problems... If I delete the path home/<new user> and try to log in the system tells me I can use root as home directory but I will likely experience problems, and then it won't let me log in. What is the best way to create this directory with the appropriate permissions? Should I just create another user and delete this one?

I work on machines with different architectures, all of which share the same home directory(what is the technical term for it -- network mounting ?). Since I don't have admin privileges on these systems, I have installed programs in /home/<my_id>/bin. A program compiled for one architecture doesn't work when I login into another system. I'm thinking of creating architecture specific directories which would contain inaries/libraries specific to that architecture and creating a softlink to it t /home/<my_id>/bin. The only problem with this solution is that I can't work on two systems at the same time.
