When I use top to see memory usage, I have 65gb ram but only 1.3gb of it free and remaining is shown as used. When I ran my program It gives memory insufficiency error. Although no other program is using the remaining 63.7gb ram it is hold. How can I get free the unused ram?
View 3 RepliesI have 160gb laptop. i installed vista in c primary partition which is 25gb and installed ubuntu in d primary partition which is 20gb. A remainig for my data. Now i tried to install CENT OS by formatting ubuntu. I inserted CENT OS DVD and restarted and i selected to delete my /dev/sda2 which is showing 20480mb and it shown me free space. but i tried to add partion /boot of 100mb it got added. but, when i am trying to add / of 3000mb in the remaining 20380mb free space it showing an error message that no free space is available.

Logical Memory Space of 4GB is divided in to 3GB User Space and 1GB Kernel Space. Always. Correct?
1. How can we change it? (just changing value of PAGE_OFFSET is okay?)
2. If system have only 256MB of memory (embedded system) and suppose Kernel Modules eat away all the memory during boot. User space will be left will no memory. Is this case possible?
I have searched google for a couple of days, and I keep hearing about an INode limit on filesystems, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Now whenever I try to download something, watch a ..... video, or listen to Pandora radio, it just stops playing after 2 seconds. I'd like to learn it. So I installed lenny & grub2, after that win7, reconfigured grub2, upgraded to squeeze. All is fine, but I cant start working in Debian as I can work only in Windows. So I decided to use qemu to emulate win7 booting. I have sda1, sda2 for squeeze; sda3 and sda4 for win7. If I try "qemu /dev/sda3" I get disk read error. If I try "qemu /dev/sda" I have grub 2 boot screen and when continue booting win7 I get "Ramdisk device creation failed due to insufficient memory" (as screen on [UR:]). I tried to use m -1024 parameter and got screen with "Windows load files" and reboot to grub2 screen/

When I check my disk space using either disk usage analyzer or Gparted it says I have about 69 gigs left. But say I am in a folder on the bottom of the window it will tell me I only have 48 gigs. And just to test I tried going over the amount specified in the folder window and it tells me I have insufficient space.

So I understood is a problem with space.
I went to my shell and digited the command:
df -h
but it show there is plenty of space.
I also deleted a lot of space to make room, just to be sure, but nothing different happens. I'm attaching a screenshot to this post.
I have recently upgraded to 10.04 alpha2. I have an external ntfs hard drive that I use for media storage. In Jaunty, I had this drive mounted with ntfs-3g and could read and write to it from my Windows laptop.
Now, I have mounted this drive in 10.04 and have rw access to it from within the machine itself i.e. I can move files around from the console etc... but when I try to write something to the share from my windows laptop, I get the following error:
Cannot copy [filename]: There is not enough free disk space. Delete one or more files to free disk space and then try again.
Here is df showing I have enough disk space. Also, I can copy the same file to my home directory which is also shared and them mv it through the console to the storage ntfs drive with no problem.

I am trying to transfer 3 AVI files of about 650MB each to a video DVD to be used standalone in a DVD player with TV. When I start creating the Video DVD project, I drag my 2GB of files into the project window, Brasero recognizes the blank DVD as having 4GB, but then reports there is insufficient space to burn the selected files and do I want to use multiple discs. Running Ubuntu 10.04, and have accepted all automatic updates as they come out.

recently it began giving me problems, and now it wont mount. gparted tolled me to run "chkdsk /f" (under windows of course)
chkdsk shows that it fixes some file and on other files it says: "insufficient disk space to recover data" strange thing is the hdd has 150 GB free

I got a new computer (core i7, 6gb ram, 500gb hdd).I first installed Windows 7, because I remembered how Fedora 9 created a dual-boot screen nicely, while if I installed XP on a system with Fedora 9 it would just take over the boot and boot to XP.Anyway, so Windows 7 is installed, and I got the Fedora 11 DVD install.I partitioned the hdd as thus (on win7 installation): 93gb windows system, 300gb media partition, 90gb unformatted.When I boot the installation and select the "use free space" I get an error that there isn't enough free space on the disks to create the layout.I also tried to create a custom layout, but after a few errors I gave up on that what should I do to get Fedora 11 installed?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have Fedora 6 & 10.3. Both DVD's will install the default partitioning (LVM) with either the normal programs or the custom selection. I wish to custom create my own partitions (about6 or7) with EXT3 format. The drive is112Gb. and I am only using about 30Gb. in total, giving approx. 80 Gb free. However after checking for dependencies the error message comes back 'Insuffient free space' every time. This happens on another M/board and/or Drive combination.

I am a beginner to Ubuntu & Linux. Some months back I installed ubuntu on a somewhat aged & slowed down acer laptop running win XP. Finally I tried running ubuntu a couple days ago & it's been pretty smooth, until this from update manager: Not enough free disk space
The upgrade needs a total of 615M free space on disk '/'. Please free at least an additional 296M of disk space on '/'. Empty your trash and remove temporary packages of former installations using 'sudo apt-get clean'. I guess I don't have to install these "important security updates", but it's probably best I do & learn how to use the file browser, terminal (Applications - Accessories - really, it's a little hidden), other important parts of ubuntu.
For downloading I have an external drive connected with 760 GB free - more than enough space for anything. I can also move files to this disk - do I maybe need to reboot into win xp to move files? I have no idea how to know which ubuntu files to remove for space - proc folder seems to have enough room, but should I just move it to the external drive? I can't seem to access the rest of the hard Drive where I could simply move a 4GB movie.
Was wondering if anyone can explain briefly the relationship of "cache" and free memory in the "free" memory command.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Fedora 13 on my HP dv6 laptop and when I try to use the Use Free Space installation type, I receive a Partitioning Error: Could not allocate requested partitions - not enough free space on disks. Before I started the install, I used the Disk Management utility in Windows 7 to shrink the volume of the C: drive down to 242 GB and leaving 210 GB Unallocated. Here is what the screen looks like when I select Create Custom Layout (also receive the not enough free space error):

I've got a question on free disk space. I'm currently running CentOS 5.5 on in Xenserver virtual environment. We've had an issue with disk space. My question is as follows: - from a ssh connection i run df -h this gives the value of 90% used leaving me with 9GB. If I use system monitor via a VNC connection the free disk space value is 20GB free on the same volume. Which one is correct? I do use SNMP to monitor the same volume and should alert me when < 10% is free I know this works as I set the alert threshold to < 90% I get an alert.

When I run top I see used memory and free memory. When I first boot the system there is lots of free memory in about a day or two that memory whittles down from 2GB of Free mem(of 4GB) to 20MB and then maintains 20-50MB of free memory. This seems to be consistent across different servers. At first I thought there had to be some major memory leaks but it just seemed to prevalent to not have been noticed before.
I found a better way to gauge memory usage is the use of the free command. Now I am confused though, what is Free memory as it is defined and monitored in top?
I am looking for free database that has low memory usage and innodb and memory like engins that has C API and support trigger and client/server support for using in embedded linux systems.
