General :: How To Carry Out Updates
Jun 20, 2010
I am running Linpus Linux Lite v1.0.9.E, and I need to update Adobe flash player, and when I go to update it, I get a choice of updates - YUM for linux, .tar.gz for linux and .rpm for linux. Now, I have two questions - (I am a total novice at this as I am more used to windows but i am now trying to use linux instead)
1) Which one do I need to download, or does it not matter
2) When I download it, how do I actually install the update on my computer? It tries to open it with a choice of applications, but then asks for a password, which I do not know, but after trying to update other things, I can still not get them to install. Is there a step-by-step guide anywhere that I can follow, being a bit stupid!

Yesterday, I did a clean install of Lucid on a T42 thinkpad, with wireless card as identified by lshw below. I did the installation from within a live CD session, with wifi enabled.
Code:
description: Wireless interface
product: PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter
vendor: Intel Corporation
On reboot into the fresh system and update I had the issues that others have seen with network manager not connecting, repeatedly asking for password and so on. Oddly enough, using a Netgear usb wifi dongle worked perfectly, so I thought there might be a driver issue. Updates did not help. The network manager icon would not appear in the notification area at all when attempting to connect to wifi in a cafe locally. Today, I did a fresh re-install from the same CD with the home wifi switched off and no internet connection on the laptop. No issues. Wifi is working perfectly at present. I had to make the home connection available to all users to stop the keyring password request (I use autologin). I'll be trying to connect at local cafes tomorrow (one has no security, one uses an ascii wep password, and a third has a WPA encryption)
Is it possible that the settings from the live session are carried over in some way and interfering with network manager in some way? (This all started because my minimal install (see signature) reached a state where it would not show the network manager icon when attempting to connect to wifis in cafes and colleges, which I need to do. I decided to reinstall to return to a known state. I may try a minimal installation and manual wifi connection from the command line next...)

I used the network manager to configure my eth0 interface. It is working fine. I have found the nameserver entries in /etc/resolv.conf files. But the /etc/network/interfaces file does not carry the ip, netmask, gateway, network and broadcast entries. It only has a entry for the lo interface. where are the settings for eth0 as done by the network manager, stored in case of ubuntu?

I'm using libxml2 to handle/manipulate some XML files. In order to check the consistency of a XML file, I have a DTD and I'm using the xmlValidateDtd method to compute the check.
However, when an error occures during the check (for example an attribute is missing in a XML tag), then libxml2 writes the error on the stdout/stderr. For exemple:
Code:
/home/XML/FreeFour.xml:18: element CA: validity error : Element CA does not carry attribute maxlength
The method return the right result (true or false depending on the check result), but occurring errors are written on the stdout/stderr, and I actually don't want that.

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

I just learned that warsow 0.6 is out, and went to see if it was available in the ubuntu software center yet, as opposed to going and downloading and installing it manually from the warsow website. The ubuntu repo's still have version 0.5, and at the bottom of the page it says:
"Updates: Canonical does not provide updates for Warsow. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community."
So if I wanted to 'update' this item in the repo's for the better of the community what would that entail?

I am setting up LDAP server, i set slapd.conf(dc=proldap,dc=com) and start ldap it is OK but when i check using ldapsearch -x -b '' -s base '(objectclass=*)' namingContexts result is : namingContexts: dc=my-domain,dc=com
it seems that it did not use my slapd.conf so i tried removing my slapd.conf from /etc/openldap and start slapd again and it did start with no errors. and when i do ldapsearch again still uses dc=my-domain,dc=com
I tried searching about this in google and found no answers,
my reference in setting up ldap is the link below. but it seemed that it always uses another configuration not the one i modified
I'm using Fedora12, ldap version 2.4.19. i installed ldap by yum install url

There are some updates in the Update Manager list which I do not install. Among them, some drivers for HP Printers (I don't know why this cropped up; I don't even use printers on my laptop), and gcj updates (I use gcc/g++ but not gcj). I unchecked them the first time I saw them on my UM list. However, for every subsequent batch of new updates, UM retains these updates and I need to uncheck them every time. How can I remove them totally from my UM list?

So, it is my understanding that Ubuntu's automatic updates do not install ANY updates that are not "important security updates." For example, it did not upgrade me to Firefox 4 automatically; I had to do it myself (Don't all new browser versions usually contain new security features/patches? Oh well...That is a separate question entirely).
ANYWAY, is there some way to get the latest stable versions of all of my open-source software automatically (or at least all at once, on command), instead of just security updates? It seems silly to have to install new versions for every program manually.
Also, related/side question: Now that I have installed Firefox 4 myself (via apt-get by adding the mozilla-stable PPA), will I stop getting security updates for Firefox through the standard Ubuntu update manager?
Actually, a really thorough explanation of the whole automatic update system (or a link to one) would be great too.

I'm running CentOS 5.4 and noticed that for the past month there haven't been any new updates showing up either on 'yum check-update' or 'yum update' (I'm interested in basic and security updates). Although this may be right, I wonder if there is an online reference where I can check the updates that are released for CentOS (security bulletins) and make sure if there is anything wrong with my update system.

Just loaded 9.04 side by side with XP. HDD says it has 138 of 149 remaining....When I try to load updates in Ubuntu it says there is not enough space on HDD. Did I make a mistake loading side by side? Updates are many, so I also wonder if I can choose the ones I need.that is.....once I recognize what the hell, individually, they are.

I'm working on some code from my computer at home and would like to do CVS updates to a remote server. When I'm at work I don't need to type in a password, but at home each time I need to type in my password each time I do a CVS update. I've followed the instructions here on how to set up a passwordless public/private ssh key pair: [URL].. However, after that I still need to type in my ssh password each time I do CVS update (or anything CVS related) from my local computer.

I run Elyssa and have a symbol of a padlock at the bottom right side. This is for updates on software. It tells me that I have 351 updates available. when I open this the updates are shown and each have a number.Mainly 2's and 3's. when I do press the install update button, it gives me the following message:
warning you are about to install software that can not be authenticated....
This message worries me so I have not done any updates for a loooooong time.
What shall I do? How can I tell what is malicious and what is not? does anyone out there know?

What I am usinggrep -B 1 -A 2 "Installed" /var/log/updates.logInstead of tailing the log is there a way to grep all lines of the log with word Installed AND today's date? Also, what about grep lines of the log that contain a specific date and more than one word, by example : ('Installed' or 'Failed' on '2011-06-24')?

I have an EeePC 701 4G running Ubuntu Netbook (10.04). I installed the system on its 4GB SSD for speed reasons - fast SD cards are expensive. I keep all user data on a fairly slow SD card. Problem is, after a few updates, I have less and less free space on the SSD. Since updating replaces old packages with newer ones, shouldn't the size remain more or less the same? I'm almost out of space and will probably have to stop updating the system soon... and yes, I do perform apt-get clean after every update. It helps, but the size is still steadily creeping upwards.

My update manager is alerting me of new updates to be installed and when I try to install them with apt-get, I receive this error message:
ronin-machine1:~$ sudo apt-get install updates
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package updates
This is the first time I've ever encountered problems updating. I tried updating apt-get thinking maybe this was the problem:
sudo apt-get update
It was successful but it wasn't the problem. I tried Google but the info I could find related to not being able to install specific software. I also tried rebooting my computer just as a last resort and that didn't do anything either.
