But when i write "sudo nautilus" it open the nautilus with new config settings. This means there is a problem on my system ? I'm going through the same problem as Tkeins. I recently loaded Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick server, further I loaded KDE also. So while I can run Konquerer from within the KDE, but not the firefox. Further when I try it from console I get the same message 'No Display specified.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI like to alias my firefox commands so I can open up mutiple pages at once. This works great. firefox [URL]
But if I have firefox already up and running it will open as tabs of the firefox I already have running. How can I open the multiple pages in a new window in this case?
- Using -no-remote could work, but I would have to make a whole different firefox profile for each set of pages, not really a solution. - Also tried setting it to a particular display and it opened as a tab again. ie. firefox [URL] -display=":0.0"
After some use, firefox will not restart from the panel or a terminal. Looking in '.mozilla/firefox' I find:
Quote:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 dave dave 15 2010-02-19 20:55 lock -> 127.0.1.1:+2189
The number at the end changes everytime I remove it. Is this something trying to get in or something trying to get out? Or what? This has been going on for a while.
Firefox does not open under any circumstances, it's allocated in the memory and has it's process ids, but the browser is not opened at all. There's not terminal output when ran in terminal, no dmesg, debug..., nothing.
The only info I could give:
Terminal try:

So, I really don't know what's happening, if someone have some light to shed, I'd be glad.

Due to my problem getting F13 installed on my main desktop PC I thought I'd give the live CD a go in an old laptop:
Toshiba Satellite 1400-103, 512 MB RAM
This time I at least got to the desktop, however firefox will not connect to any website (and I've tried dozens)
However if i open up a terminal I can ping the websites that were not connecting, e.g.
Code:
So it does not appear to be a DNS problem (and other win boxes on my router connect fine)
Is it even worth proceeding with the F13 install at this stage?
Is there a terminal emulator which works well in an Ubuntu desktop and provides the following features which Mac OS X's Terminal application has? Re-wrapping text when the window is resized.A Clear command which clears scrollback (as the shell clear does not) and does not clear the cursor's line (typically containing a prompt).

I have a favorite REXX program called fv2. When I was a Windows user I had an icon for fv2 on the Quick Launch bar. Click that icon, and the program ran. Now, as a Linux (Ubuntu) user it is necessary to go through several steps to run fv2.
1) Launch a terminal by clicking on the terminal icon at the top of the screen. What's that area called? The GNOME panel?
2) Enter: ~/Desktop/RexxScripts
3) Enter: regina fv2
I run fv2 several times per day and would really like to have the convenience of a clickable icon.

View 5 Replies View RelatedHow can I make terminal applications immune to terminal emulator close, but still able to use all virtual terminal features?
egin{UPDATE}I want my terminal application remain alive and accessible if I accidentally close terminal emulator. This functionality is provided by screen and tmux, but they have issues with colors and they flush screen.Yes,I can run the shell inside screen, but I do not want the shell remain alive unless there is some other program running.
end{UPDATE}I see this must be something like screen, but without VT100 terminal emulation, something which will just apply whatever application does with "terminal proxy"'s terminal (like outputting something to stdout/stderr or using stty to set terminal options) to the terminal this proxy runs in.
// I know about screen and altscreen on, but it makes either this (screen with TERM=screen):
or this (screen with TERM=rxvt-unicode):
while I want this (rxvt-unicode without screen):
I have figured out that everything looks fine if I compile rxvt-unicode with USE=-xterm-color (in fact vim looks like on the second picture even without screen if I add this USE flag) and set TERM=screen-256color, but I do not like this workaround because it actually changes colors and I can't be sure that it will always change them only this way:
Right now when I start a program from a terminal I can't use that terminal instance again until I close the program.
I am a new user of linux, and I want to know if there is a way to execute a program/application from a terminal without blocking the terminal until the program ends.
hello
I tried to find a good subject but it was the best of mine, anyway I'll explain it here.
some time I do some thing like installing a new application in Linux terminal of my office PC but it take a long time and I have to go home during its installation or configuration process that it is not good to cancel it.My current solution is abandoning the process until next day. I wanted to know is there any way to redirect an input and out put of a terminal to another one, if it works I can continue my abandoned process by ssh to my Linux office PC and redirect that terminal to my new remote sshed terminal from my home.
Thank a lot for any help.
I'm having this strange behaviour. If i ssh -X remotehost, and then i issue firefox, the localhost firefox is activated.

View 4 Replies View Relatedi am wanting to use Firefox to connect to my smb shares. However, i keep getting this error message: Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (smb) isn't associated with any program. My client configuration is as follows: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.8pre) Gecko/20100106 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Shiretoko/3.5.8preI tried the instructions below to try and fix the problem with no success: Quote: From [URL]
Linux with Firefox In order to connect to a network share directly from you browser under Linux, you must configure Firefox to handle URL's starting with "smb://". This is done by typing "about:config" in the address line and hitting return. After that you must right-click the list of settings and choose "New -> Boolean" as shown below.
As name you must type: "network.protocol-handler.external.smb" with a value of "true". After that you must do the same thing over again, but this time choose "New -> String", type the name: "network.protocol-handler.app.smb" with a value of the path to the application you wish to use for browsing network shares. If you use KDE, this will typically be "/usr/bin/konqueror".

difference b/w a login shell and a non-login shell ?
