I am having trouble using grep command. I want to search for each line in first file in second file and if they are present, write to file called successfile else to failfile. Below is the code
what is happening is, when the first failure occurs (when a line in first file is not present in second file), the script is killed.
Can anyone please tell me what I am doing wrong? code...

The problem: Im running through a LARGE (about 10,000 lines) xhtml file and need to replace every instance of lines beginning <p>~
The following code works but takes a long time mainlly because an in/out operation needs to be carried out on each line. If I could read from a string rather than a file it would take a much shorter time!

How do I find a string in files in a directory. And these file names begin with letter a. I also want to get the number of occurrences of this string from the grep I run.
I tried this:
cat * | grep -c string but it searches all files. I just want to search files that begin with letter a
I am using grep to filter out directories I am not interested in like this:svn stat | grep -v data/charts | grep -v lib/model | grep -v web/picsIt seems a bit "hacky". Is there a better way to specify more than one string to ignore, so that I dont have to chain multiple grep commands?

I need to search a text file for a string of numbers which are different lengths, and always are between number=" and " like:

I need to grab those numbers and pipe each one to a line in a file. I've already tried something with awk and that didn't seem to work.
I'm trying to grep the output of ngrep. Unfortunately when I add another grep to the pipeline, I get no output at all. It can be some other command too - cat / grep / tee - everything breaks the chain. Example:

But the execution gived "bad substitution' error. If the tags are removed and substring is fetched it works fine. Is there any other was to get substring in a string with tags.

But when I am grep-ing value of 'c', I am getting this error.

This is because there is a space between "Feb" and "10".
I have a dataset (see example below) that I would like to go through and copy all lines containing a certain string ("LGIG") plus the line immediately following that line to a new file. I have no problem grepping lines containing the string LGIG but I'm lost how to translate that to line number and shift up one line number for each instance of that string.

Someone gave me a script that would tar then gzip my music directory, as well as remove the previous days backup. I have it set up in crontab, but it appears to have stopped working the last couple days, so i tried running it manually. Below is the script and the output I got. Any ideas why its failing now? I don't think anything changed on the server, maybe someone installed updates but idk why that would affect this.

I'm attempting to mount a Windows dir to a mount point on my Linux VMWare instance running on my Windows 7 machine. I am using a shell file to automatically mount the directory I want at bootup. However, I'm finding that Linux always mounts to a directory at the top of my C: file structure for some reason, and I can't figure out why.
Here's the dir structure:
C:/target (don't want to mount this, but this is what gets mounted)
C:/Users/me/target (this is what I want to mount to)

If this means anything my Virtual Machine has a single hard drive SCSI, which I believe is /dev/sda1. I don't see anything from mount that would indicate that the c:/target dir is getting hard-mounted somehow from the /etc/vfstab file, but maybe I just don't understand how mounting works...

This is a very simple problem, but I'm scratching my head with others..
In composing a simple shell script in class, we can't seem to get the script to execute fully. script was formatted as follows.

echo "good bye for now"
exit
did, Chmod 755 to make executable
type file name "bye"
runs but wont exit.....
it just echos the type"good bye for now
The instructor says it works for him at home....
But it wont work in class...
Is there a reason it wont "exit" the shell as commanded ?

The above command does exactly what I want: limit the search of files in $SEARCHDIR to those specified by --include.
I use double quotes rather than single quotes because of the shell variables. I would have thought this would cause the shell to expand the "*" but this doesn't seem to be the case.
