I think To get the full value from your ram on windows you need to have a 64bit install version installed, can someone tell me if its the same with linux or Unix. I have 9gb of ram on my PC & wanted to know if I it matters if I use a 32bit Distro or if I need a 64bit on my 64bit PC to utilize all the ram.

At the moment, top shows all the RAM is taken, (NOT by cache), but the RAM used by the various processes is very far from 16GB.I have seen this problem several times, but I don't understand what is happening.My only remedy so far has been to reboot the machine.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIn our database, when checking the memory used using top command, we are always seeing 32 GB RAM utilized. We have set the sga_max_size to 8gb and PGA to 3 gb. We have tried shutting down oracle db and then the memory went down to 24GB when checked using top command. After cold reboot of the DB server, it gone down to 1.5 GB.
But once the users are started using after end of day, the memory again gone back to 32 GB.

I was trying to get the status of memory usage and disk usage using sigar in windows and ubuntu. done this in windows by just copying the sigar library into jdk library. But i was unable to do so in ubuntu. I've copied the library to java-6-sun library but still can't run the program.

I've had a stable system for a couple of years now, and it just ran out of space. I cleaned some files up to get the system workable again, but can't find the big usage area, and I'm getting conflicting results.For example, when I do a df it says I'm using 44GB out of 58 GB:

I have just installed a fresh copy of ubuntu 11.04 32 bit and I was surprised to see that the OS can see my 8GB of RAM not like Windows 32 bit OS.
How does it work? How is the address mapping performed? Is it efficient? Why doesn't it work with Windows systems?
My server is showing as 95% full, but when I check any folders underneath and files, they add up to about only a few percentage of the space.
- /tmp - 2GB LUN
- currently using 1.8GB of the 2GB
- files in the directory add up to only 50MB (I've checked for hidden files as well.. 'ls -lah'
Anyway else of telling how /tmp can have so much usage when there appears there is hardly anything in it?
What will happen to the server if /tmp is full?
I am a little confused about the Debian installer. I chose the i386 release of Debian 6, downloaded the ISO and installed in a Core2-Quad with 4Gb of RAM. That lead me to a System with a 64Bit Kernel and a 32Bit environment (is that the correct word for it?). Why would the installer chose to install a 64Bit Kernel, even if i386 installation media was explicitly selected? Though it is easy to change the kernel manually after the installation is complete, I really would like to know if there is a good technical reason for selecting a 64Bit Kernel in this case.

View 2 Replies View RelatedOn my 2 year old laptop I have an Intel Celeron Processor (The one made in June something of 2008) and last night I finally decided to tear it apart. My reasoning was, that I am going to buy a new laptop soon (I want a 64 bit system ) and lo and behold, my celeron processor has 2 cores on the chip itself. I ran several software tests on it in Linux (mostly just profiling and etc.) then I ran a full diagnostic on it and turns out that the second core was never used in any of it. So I looked over it through a magnifying glass and found a pin that was blocking a section from passing anything to this other core. I pulled the pin out and popped my processor in my laptop. Windows refused to boot at first except into Safe Mode because of a hardware change. It was there that my PC was re-evaluated and while previously I had a 3.5 out of 5.0 according to Vista, I know have a 4.1/5.0 thus Aero now was enabled. I then tried something crazy, I popped in the Arch64 net-install disk and VIOLA!!! It loaded and installed Arch64 successfully. Thus, I converted what was a 32 bit processor into a now 64 bit processor by (carefully) removing a pin. After doing research it seems other people found this out too and am wondering to myself, if Intel created this cheap of a 64bit processor, why didn't they market it like that and/or use this as their low-end 64 bit processor? It's all very fishy to me and I really don't know what to make of it.
As an update, I have re-soldered the pin on and Windows still sees the 2nd core. Arch64 however refuses to boot because it's trying to boot 64bit instructions on a 32bit processor again. It seems that since Windows saw that it was there, it has loaded a new driver (some weird "Intel Blah blah blah" [didn't write it down and don't feel like rebooting, sorry] ) that wasn't loaded before. It's still running Vista 32bit (NOT going to upgrade), but it still sees that the other core is there.
My printer wont work on 64bit ubuntu, no drivers. Just for 32bit so I don't know all the technical stuff to get it to work if there was a way to, but anyways. I tried to run ubuntu 32bit and I have a lot of boot problems. Sometimes it will boot but most of the time it wont. I have to hard reboot every time 6 or 7 times just to get it to boot. I was wondering what could be the problem. For some reason I was thinking maybe it was my hard drive being to large (1.5 terabyte) its been a while since I've tried but I don't remember there being any error messages just a black screen. I've waited up to around 5 hours for one boot so I know I am giving it enough time. Is there a fix to make 32bit ubuntu use a large hard drive like that. I know there is one for the ram but I love ubuntu and would like to have a stable system and use my printer at the same time.

"Rather than editing the script and change/remove CFLAGS definitions, you can set the ARCH to 'x86_64' and save yourself some time."
So from this I understand that they advise against editing the Slackbuild script. How do I set the ARCH variable on the command line or is it a configuration file I need to edit? I am running Slackware 13.1 64.
I have installed centos 5 64 bit in my machine but all the dependencies like php, httpd, glibc, gcc, gd, openssl and others are 32 bit, I need them to be updated to 64 bit.

The "free" command shows that 7019 MB of memory are actually in use by my system, but when summing up the actual usage (or even virtual usage like the example below) it doesn't add up - the sum is far less than what is reported by "free":

I am currently writing a JAVA script to monitor certain unix processes through JConsole. Upon having lots of trouble with runtime.exec, i decided to bypass the top/ps command call and just get the information straight from /proc/*pid*/whatever.Now i can pull back any information from any of the files I want, and the current way i determine the CPU usage of a process is as follows:Add the UTime and STime of that process from /proc/pid/stat then divide my pidCpu by UTime + STime + NTime from /proc/stat, then multiply that by 100, should give me the % cpu usage a process is using, right?Theory being if I get the jiffies assigned to my process, I can divide that by the total jiffies the cpu assigns.
However, my results seem to vary from the ones gathered from top and ps. What am I doing wrong?

I am running Slackware 13.0. I am aware of free -m, vmstat, top, etc. However, none of these programs display how much ram each program is using. Is there a program that displays how much ram each program is using? I run a headless so I'd need a program that runs in CLI.
I know that top command shows %MEM (only two programs were using 0.1%MEM) but after running free -m I only have a total of 400 MB ram left out of my 1.5 GB of ram. Where is all that lost ram?
my linux bos red hat Ent 5.0 is reporting CPU usage 100% for the service/agent cimserver.basically is slows down my system and I have to kill it so my system is OK again.my question is Can I set the CPU usage for this service? I mean can I set it to use only 4% or 10% of my CPU? or any other way to troubleshoot this 100% CPU usage.
