General :: Can't Execute Commands As Sudo Nor Access Sudoers File In Mandriva 2010.1
Aug 16, 2010
since a recent upgrade to Mandriva 2010.1 I am not able to 'sudo' as administrator or when I use the 'root' password. I am the only user on this machine (Dell Inspiron 530S multi-booted with Window's Vista Home Premium, Ubuntu 10.4, and Mandriva 2010.1). I can get into the 'Manage Users' section of the control center by authenticating as 'root' but I can't access 'sudoers file' from command line.

Customer asked me to create a menu for linux he also asked me to do this: Open like a command like where a user can execute commands...so for this the users have sudo enabled. The code below works OK. But it has an issue when a command is executed but the command does not need sudo
Like for instance
Code:
cd /
sudo: cd: command not found
How can I allow a user to execute all commands when a command does not need sudo
Code:
echo -e "Press Control+C to finish"
#echo -e " "
while true;
do
read whichcmd?"Insert Command: "
sudo $whichcmd
done

I got 'Mandriva 2010.2 One KDE Europe - Americas' live image with a tech magazine as an .iso. The live usb image created with Unetbootin on my Mint 10 of the iso won't boot. All I get a warning no operating system or something. I tried the Mandriva-seed script but it gives an error
Quote:
GLib-GIO:ERROR:/build/buildd/glib2.0-2.26.0/gio/gdbusconnection.c:2270:initable_init: assertion failed: (connection->initialization_error == NULL)
Also tried the isotostick script too but it too won't work. Here is the error message
Quote:
Not verifying image...(no checkisomd5 in Ubuntu so skipping)!
./isotostick.sh: line 103: /lib/udev/vol_id: No such file or directory
USB filesystem must be vfat or ext[23]
Cleaning up to exit...
note that the file system of the usb drive is FAT32 and the md5sum of the iso is the same as that specified in the website !!

While I was exploring my newly installed Mandriva Linux 2010 in my system, I found some emoticons somewhere in a window ( I exactly don't remember where ). I want to know where to use those emoticons or what are the uses of those emoticons. Please give me an example. If possible also please tell me where I could find that emoticons i.e. in desktop settings or somewhere else. I forgot the location.

I have a Nortek Diva keyboard and my machine runs Mandriva. In Mandriva 2009, pressing the "magnifying glass" button on my keyboard took me straight to the Firefox Search bar. Fantastic! Now that I've upgraded to Mandriva 2010, however, pressing the same button just launches the search engine as a new tab (okay, I can live with that), but the cursor is not active in the Search field.
I've been to the Nortek site but there are no drivers for the keyboard, Linux or otherwise. And no Nortek keyboard configurations appear in the Mandriva Linux Control Centre. I know how to use xev to capture keystrokes. What I'd like to know is, how can I map the keyboard button to position a cursor in the Firefox Search bar? I use Search A LOT, so this is really slowing me down. I bet it's something like "firefox %search".

I'm looking to, all in the course of one batch file:
ssh into a remote computer execute commands (per the batch file) on the remote host.
What options do I need to add to the ssh invocation so that the batch file executes the lines following the ssh invocation over the connection?
e.g., with sftp it's simply adding a -b /dev/stdin and then << EOF at the end; how do I do this with SSH?

have very limited experience with command line interfaces in Mac OSX (the OS that I'm used to). Please pitch any replies at the appropriate level My problem:I've installed Mandriva Spring 2010 Free in a Parallels Desktop 5 VM running inside Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard).Parallels has a set of tools that I need to install to make the VM play nicely with my host OS. It is here that I'm running into problems. When trying to install Parallels Tools I get a warning that 'Some components needed for parallels tools installation are missing in your system;. I'm offered the chance to download them automatically. This download always fails and I'm told that I need to download 'kernel sources' manually and try again.
After some considerable research (remember I'm TOTALLY new to Linux) I found out what this means and have installed what I believe are the correct files using the 'install and remove software' window. As I understand it, I need to download the source files of the kernel I am using (exactly the same version), so I now have:kernel-desktop-latest - Version 2.6.33.5ernel-source-latest - Version 2.6.33.5These are 'virtual rpm's that make sure i always have the latest kernel versions, which as I understand it means that I should have the latest kernel and corresponding kernels sources... but I still get the damn error message telling me to install 'kernel sources' when I try to run the parallels tools installer.

I'm trying to use my nokia n79 as internet modem for my laptop which has mandriva 2010 spring (free) installed. When i connect phone and computer with usb cable i can see my phone listed under 'gprs modem' but when i click 'connect' it says 'please wait' for a while then nothing happens.
I've tried using bluetooth and rfcomm to connect but the devices do not pair. Even l2ping isn't able to communicate with my phone.
When i use rfcomm with the connect command a dialog pops up on my phone requesting pin and i enter the one in my /etc/bluetooth/pin but then nothing happens and rfcomm exits saying connection refused.

When I try execute a variety of basic commands (including ps, ls, ifconfig, locate), I receive the error 'no such file or directory'.
Here are some suggestions that I've found online, that I have tried without success: I did a 'whereis ps' and found the file in the /bin/, and have checked that '/bin' appears when I do 'echo $PATH' I did a filesystem check which showed my hard drive as being clean I tried doing a 'sudo chmod 777 ps' but was told that I dont have permission. I don't think permissions for these files would have changed though (and I can't check as I can't run the 'ls' command).

i am working on some kind of PBX and i have list of telephone numbers inside a file, i have to insert these numbers into the correct command and then telnet to a remote server and execute these commands. i can read the telephone numbers and insert them into the command with no problem, but when i try to insert these commands into the send i face problem. here is the basic code
#!/bin/bash
read msisdn < input
string="ZZZZ:MSISDN=$msisdn;"
[code]....
i can make external loop inside the Bash which read the input file and issue the command and then telnet and execute, but this will make the script connects and disconnects again for each line which cause high load on that server and hardwar problem. i am wondering if there is an option inside the expect interperter which makes the send read directly from a file... somthing like this:
expect "<"
send "input-filename
"
expect "<"
expect eof

I have previously set up sudo via adding my name to the wheel group and then giving full privileges to the wheel group in the sudoers file. Now I choose to learn to limit that. Had noticed the most frequent use I have of sudo is to run yum update. This got me thinking, could I remove the wheel group privileges and add the following line in sudoers to limit the privilege to simply running yum, and furthermore, make it so I could run yum without a password:
## Allow root to run any commands anywhere
rootALL=(ALL) ALL
Troy ALL= NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/yum
I think that would in fact work (if I understood one of the pages here, it will work). However, upon further thinking I realized that in such a case then anyone sitting at my computer could then use yum, without a password, to install or remove any file on my system probably not a good idea. As a result I have to ask, can I tighten the privilege even further such that the only privilege so given was to run yum update and nothing else? (for example if they ran yum install it would fail). If you can do it, how?
Last, I was going to limit the privilege, time wise and try wise, by adding the following to the sudoers file:
# Defaults specification
Defaults:Troy timestamp_timeout=0, passwd_tries=3
Will that really work to limit the elevated privilege so I don't have elevated privileges lingering about, or is there a better way to do so?

In order to allow me to shutdown my PC from within fluxbox without being root I ran "visudo" and added the following line:
Code:
psionl0 ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL
A check that the line had been accepted showed all ok:
Code:
bash-4.1$ sudo -l
User psionl0 may run the following commands on this host:
(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL
Yet when I tested it out, I got nowhere:
Code:
bash-4.1$ sudo pkgtool
sudo: pkgtool: command not found
bash-4.1$ sudo shutdown -h now
sudo: shutdown: command not found
bash-4.1$
Have I done something wrong or isn't sudo meant to be used this way?

I added the following line in /etc/sudoers file
<username> ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:ALL
after adding this if I run any command it is not asking for the password. Now I need to shutdown the remote machine with sudoers user.
