I want to back up the master boot on my hard drive, in case something screws it up. What software do you recommend for this?
My first idea is to boot from a Linux CD and dd the first 512 bytes of /dev/sda, and dd it back to recover. Will this solution work, and is it safe?
Is there a way to re-install grub on the master boot record of a hard disk using a live cd?If so will i have to configure it?I'm trying to install a linux distro on my ao751h(with poulsbo ) but i after installing it i can't boot.I get an error 15 or a flashing underscore.I have already tried ubuntu,debian,mint and slackware(LILO isn't compatible with poulsbo).Also,does anybody experience problems with the ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 installers or is it only me?when i choose the language and keyboard settings the installation stop as it is and i get a crash report.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm managing a residential network. Each flat is its own subnet, and can only communicate with the other flats through a router (i.e. no broadcast). 95% of these 300 subnets only contains windows computers (from lambda users).
My final goal is to be able to browse the entire network from any computer.
I set up a samba server acting as a wins server, and every computer is aware of it because it is registered in the dhcp. So name resolution is working fine for everyone.
The same samba server is set to be the "Domain master browser":
workgroup = WORKGROUP
wins support = yes
prefered master = yes
local master = yes
domain master = yes
os level = 65
When I browse the network (using "net view" or "browstat view"), I can only see the servers which are in the same subnet as the domain master browser.
Now, when in a subnet the computers arrange themselves to find a "local master browser", the only visible computers are the one in that subnet.
What I don't understand is why all the local masters don't synchronize their lists with the domain master.
So, to sum up, every subnet get the following behaviour:
-if a local master is elected, the only visible computers are the one in the same subnet.
-if no local master is elected, the only visible computers are the one in the subnet of the domain master.
-if I add another samba, configured as a local master winning all elections, then the magic is working and the lists are synchronized.
What is expected:
-every computer can see all the computer from all the subnets.
So im trying to backup my computer, and I understand the easiest and maybe best way is just through an external hard drive. Mine is 1 terabyte. Ive organized my folders by just putting everything into my documents. But when I hook up my external hard drive, and I try to drag and drop, even through explorer, or copy and paste the folder, it just creates a shortcut. Then, if I bring it to another computer and open that file it just goes to the my documents of that computer, so it's obviously useless. I know this is extremely basic but I know I should do it prior to dual boot just in case.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot computer. The WindowsXP "side" has been infected with a rootkit virus. So far UBUNTU has not been affected to my knowledge. I have not yet been able to remove the virus from the WindowsXP "side". I am thinking of deleting the NTFS partition and have the computer fully dedicated to UBUNTU.
Now for my question. Is there a possibility that the virus resides in the MBR and that I need to "rebuild" the MBR to actually remove the virus? Even more extreme, should I totally re-install UBUNTU in the name of safety and precaution.
I have a load balancer with 2 web servers behind it. The web servers rsync with cloud storage to update their apache directories 1 time every hour. Apache is just running php pages that pull/push data to a DB so they dont need to be updated that often. However I need to figure out how to implement a Master/Master MySQL setup to have my web servers point to for the PHP stuff. I need to implement it without having a single point of failure. The Load balancers are useless for failover as they only detect availability based on Ping request. So putting a master/master setup behind a Load Balancer is out. what is the best way to setup the master/master mysql in a HA setup without the use of a load balancer provided by the host?

I think I managed to corrupt my master boot record, or have a very intractable problem with Grub.
I'm not sure how I did this, but my desktop will boot Ubuntu fine from a USB, but every time I try to install it, the install seems to go fine, but when I finish the install and the machine tries to boot the OS from it's hard drive, it does not work. The monitor does not get a signal and it just goes to sleep.
I tried posting here to resolve the problem before, tried everything on this thread: [URL]
But nothing worked.
I have even tried running the system from a USB, running a "shred" command for the hard drive and then reinstalling - my theory was that the shred command would destroy all the data on the hard drive anyway, and allow a "clean" install from whatever was corrupt on it, but no luck - when I installed Ubuntu on the hard drive, same problem.
I'm not clear where the problem lies now, I'm assuming there is something up with it's master boot record, but there are no partitions on it's hard drive and I started with a completely blank, unformatted drive.
I just installed SuSE 11.2 on top of where 11.1 used to be on my hard drive. Acronis Operating System Manager will let me boot into XP Pro but it tells me it cannot find SuSE in the master boot record. If I repair the master boot record in SuSE, XP Pro disappears. What do I do?

I follow these instructions to the letter, the live "CD" works fine - using a USB stick, I do not have a DVD drive, in- or external -. When I try to install Ubuntu from the live system, it corrupts my master boot record, I get the Error: No Such Device #####################. After I fixed this I tried to install Ubuntu under windows, using the same usb's wubi installer. The install completes, I reboot, and after selecting Ubuntu in my boot menu, I get that likewise well known error with wubildr.mbr [URL]
Rebuilding the USB stick doesn't make any difference, it behaves the same way. The wubi installer has the very annoying habit of downloading the iso during the installation procedure every time, I don't know why I can't just select the iso downloaded in the first step of the above link. This way I cannot check any md5 because I have no idea where it downloads the iso. What should I do to get Ubuntu working? Reinstalling any of my Windows systems is not an option, it is every time like gambling, I am using the same installation files, but sometimes the result is just not the same.
I have a 1TB hard drive which is formatted with FAT32. Attempting to make a new partition I clicked the format drive button in Disc Utility. I chose Master Boot Record and something was written to the drive. So now I can't mount the drive and Disc Utility says that there aren't any partitions. I don't think this can be true because I had 200 GB of data on the drive and it would have taken longer to delete all that. At least I think...
View 7 Replies View RelatedI like music A lot! every CD I buy, I like to rip to my HD as WAVs (i'd do flac but I have a windows system too, and can't for the life of me find a flac codec for Media Player); but I'd also like to create images in case i lose / scratch / otherwise damage my CDs. I usually use DD, but the system has to be unmounted. Problem is IDK where audio CDs are mounted so I can't unmount it.

I've read about a lot of different software for backups but I'm not really sure which one would be the best for this. I want to be able to use this backup to restore the system just in case something happens. What would be the best software to use for this? I'd like something that will basically clone the system I assume since I'd like it to not only copy the system structure but also symlinks.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIn a few hours I'll have a new 500GB Sony laptop, filled with the usual Sony rubbish which I'll promptly be replacing with Ubuntu or Crunchbang or something. However, first I want to make a full clone of the drive (including recovery partitions), should I wish to return it to Sony or sell it on in its factory state.
The problem is that the only backup drives I have are less than 500GB - the biggest I have is 250GB or so! So I need to backup and compress on-the-fly.
What's the best way to do this? Presumably dd piped into gzip would do the trick, or does anyone have any other suggestions to accomplish this?
I want to do a clean re-install of Windows 7 but there are files and installed programs which need to be backed up and restored. I tried using the Windows 7 backup utility to do a full backup to an external usb drive. The problem is that whenever the backup gets close to finishing, it always crashes. The system I am backing up has been compromised by viruses, which might be causing this. I already used several utilities to get rid of the viruses but some of the damage they did can not be undone. I tried doing the backup in safe mode but Windows 7 does not allow this. What other methods can I use to backup and restore important programs and files on Windows 7? Perhaps there is a way to do it from outside Windows 7, like say, using a Linux live cd? One of the main problems I see is restoring installed programs since those make use of the registry so simply copying the files probably won't work.

Details: % First hurdle: on the first day, I want to backup the "first" 1G of the hard drive. Of course, there really is no "first" 1G on a hard drive.% After 80 days, I'll have my whole HD backed up... assuming none of my files ever change, which of course they do. So the backup plan/program must also catch file creation/changes as they come along. % The backups must be consistent, in that I can restore my system restoring the backups sequentially. In other words, "dd if=/harddrive" probably won't work.
% The backups should encrypt file contents AND names, but I don't see this as a major hurdle. % Once the backup has backed up everything (even changed files), it can re-backup the first 1G on my hard drive. On fedora 12 - 1 drive - 2 partitions: a small partition to boot, a big one for all other things - sda1 and sda2.
I would like to use tar to copy them to a different drive. That way I not only back them up but also reorganize them.
(1) approach 1 - 2 drive approach
On second drive (sdb) created 2 partitions with fdisk, used mkfs to put file systems into them.
Easy to do sdb1. I created a directory /target and mounted sdb1 there. Then used tar pipe tar to copy /boot to /target. Appears to be ok.
Not so obvious how to do sdb2. I can mount it at target but
(1) if I copy / to /target there is recursion?? I tried --exclude=/boot --exclude=/target but it went ahead and copied /target.
Also there are a number of things mounted onto / - see output of mount below

I have a 3 year macbook with Windows 7 installed as 40gb and OS X as 40gb (80gb HD). I want to remove OS X as Im at the limit of 40gb on Windows and I have not logged on to Mac OS X since installed Win7 (dont flame me).
So I want to delete OS X partition and expand my win partition to 80gb BUT I still would like to be able to regularly (once a week/month) backup my Windows 7 partition - its took a while to setup everything up right - not just docs and programs - so when the hard drive dies I want to be able to restore the partition and boot away, (the daily volatile bits I can pull down from dropbox and project from soure control). With Mac OS X I could use Winclone - and this worked flawless last time the HD failed with XP but with the absence of OS X I will need something else.
Im thinking can I use a Linux Live boot CD along with an external USB hard drive. Boot from CD and then dd? the partition to the USB?
What linux distro live CD should I use? I say dd as if I know what am taking about (I dont) is this the best way to backup a partition (when it will be restored to same hardware as bootable) ? What command?

I have been backing this up using cron as the root user, but another admin in my company insists that we create a separate user to perform this task for security reasons. /ext is a symlink to /mnt/vg1/vol1, under which are installs and media directories.
I'm running:
rdiff-backup --backup-mode --include-globbing-filelist backup.list / /backup
rdiff-backup keeps recreating a symlink: /backup/ext -> /mnt/vg1/vol1, which is kind of missing the point, because then it doesn't actually back up the files in /mnt/vg1/vol1/installs, etc.
Im currently using windows 7 and I want to shift for Linux. So i thought to start from Mandrake-free. My current filesystem is NTFS which full of windows extension documents.
