Nov 10, 2009I am currently using gnome on Fedora 11 and English is the default language on the system. I was able to figure out how to make it possible to add Spanish characters when I type (likeetcetera). I also figured out how to install Spanish dictionaries for the software I use that commonly does spell checking. how to have two default dictionaries in use at the same time. For example if I am using OpenOffice to write something, I would like to be able to write in either Spanish or English and not have worry about changing the dictionary in use. Is it possible to have two dictionaries set up at the same time?

Oct 21, 2010Please help me with this anoying spell check "helper".I've installed openSUSE 11.3 and KDE 4 and updated the latest patches.When I start firefox and thunderbird a spell checker activates which is active in all windows (including shell). I have removed all spell checkers (aspell, ispell, hunspell) then rebooted and the spell checker was gone. But now I wasn't able to start firefox and thunderbird because they seem to use it. I have installed again hunspell. The "helping" spell checker was there again :-))In the spell checking section of kde system settings I'm not able to find an option to disable this "helper".

Feb 27, 2010I would like to localize my system in Czech so I wanted to install all necessary packages. However, when I wanted to install dictionaries common and also myspell, it wanted to completely remove Openoffice. I have these repositories:

Someone told me that there is probably problem with versions and in repository is still only OOo 2.4 so it could be the reason. Is there any solution?

Nov 19, 2009My monitor kept powering down after 20 minutes so I installed Gnome-power-manager by yum so that I could change the settings. After the installation and every time I try to use it I get a message saying:

I'm now unable to effect a change in the power settings and the display keeps turning off.
1) Is someone able to post their config file from a working F12 install? I believe it's /etc/dbus-1/system.d/gnome-power-manager.conf but not certain as I don't have one ;-)
2) ~/.gconf/apps/gnome-power-manager/%gconf.xml is empty - is it empty for someone with a working install?
3) how I can change the power settings without the gui - I'm googling on this point and will post the answer as and when I find it.

Fedora :: Repository List And List Of Installed Applications?
Feb 17, 2010I understand there is a file that stores the repositories' information, but I can't find it!Is there a way I can create a list of what applications have been installed?The idea is that if I am running a backup, finding a way to save the repository list and applications installed so if I am upgrading, or fixing a borked system by re-installing Fedora, I could copy the repo list back, and run the applications list like ode:yum install <cat apps.txt?> and get all of the applications I've installed via Yum without having to remember them all?Is there anything else, outside of /home, I should look at backing up? SELinux settings?

Mar 2, 2011I am trying to set up samba using AD to authenticate users. I did a clean install with the latest version of debian (need at least version 3 of samba for this to work). When I first installed winbind and ran "ps -ef | grep winbind", I could see about 4 instances of winbindd running. I set up kerberos and ran kinit and that ran fine, then tried changing my smb.conf file and restarting samba and winbind. Everything seems to appear normal when I restart the daemons, but when I run "ps -ef | grep winbind", I see nothing running.

For example, assume we have installed package "example-utility" which uses /etc/example-utility.conf as one of its configuration files. The package provides a default configuration file upon its installation. Assume we have modified /etc/example-utility.conf according to our needs. This file should be included in the listing produced by the program I am looking for.
If such a tool does not exist, I would like to create it. However, I am new to RPM-based systems, and, as such, I am having difficulties finding the necessary documentation. Should I be reading the yum source code? Is there some sort of document describing the package database on RH/CentOS/etc. systems and how 3rd party applications are supposed to work with this database?

Jul 31, 2010When I get to the login screen on my computer (with ubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-desktop, and xubuntu-desktop installed on Ubuntu), Gnome isn't in the list of desktop environments!
My temporary solution:
I have Openbox/Gnome. I also have an icon in my panel that opens "compiz --replace" so I can still use the regular WM with compiz.
Why my temporary solution isn't good enough:
It's annoying to have to have an extra icon in my panel, and to have to press it at login. Also, I don't get the Compiz splash screen when I login. Overall it's just not as impressive.
Is there any way to get Gnome back in the menu?

Debian Configuration :: Apt Sources.list Ssh:// With Custom Port?
Sep 26, 2010I've setup my own repository which I want to use SSH as the protocol. I managed to get everything working with an SSH key using port 22. Now, I would like to change the SSH port. I've already changed it on the SSH/repo server. Now I can't figure out how to change apt to use a custom port on the client computer.
My sources.list file line which worked over port 22: deb ssh://user@1.1.1.1/home/user/repo lenny main contrib non-free I've tried: deb ssh://user@1.1.1.1:12345/home/user/repo lenny main contrib non-free and it fails and actually says "failed connecting to port 22"
Can this be done? I've searched google for hours and I getting nothing but unrelated data. I've read the man pages. The man page for apt.conf specified that you can set the port this way for HTTP, but doesn't mention anything about ssh ports.

Debian Configuration :: Removing List Of Unwanted Packages
May 5, 2011I have a fresh Debian install, since this install was on a desktop, I had an internet connection and didn't notice (it was late, I was half asleep) I opted to download a whole load of packages I didn't really need. I thought all was doomed until I remembered that I have done another Debian install but a week ago on a laptop, which has a nice clean install without all the bloat.
So I ran dpkg --get-selections > selections
and had it sent to my new desktop installation.
Now if I run dpkg --set-selections < selections followed by dselect-upgrade nothing happens. I assume this is because the smaller list contains all the packages 'to be installed' which already are, and all the missing packages are not being purged. Do I need to explicitly add all the packages I want to purge to the 'selection' list or is there a better way of doing it?

Today I decided to include again Debian Volatile and discovered that it doesn't exist anymore and that I can get the same packages using this line: deb [url] squeeze-updates main
And the first question is: is this the same than debian-security?
Then, I decided to use [url] to make things less confused, and this was the output:
The first line is Ok. The second line, I guest it's the same than my second line. But, the third, is something different. So, the main question is: what is the difference between squeeze-proposed-updates and squeeze-updates? Are those repos completely separated from squeeze/updates (in security.debian.org)? And, what else should I add to have an always up-to-date and secure system?

Oct 7, 2010I am in the process of customizing my desktop, and I have run into a problem. As a programmer, I will invariable end up with tons of windows open. I would like to expand the gnome-panel's Window List's y size to allow more applications to show without being crunched together.
That's the way the desktop currently looks, notice the tiny Window List in the top left. That's as big as it gets. I want to expand it all along the entire left side. I have a feeling the answer is in gconf-editor, but i just can't find the right field to modify.
CentOS 5 :: Flashing KDE Applications In Windows List Of Gnome Panel?
May 1, 2009I am running CentOS 5.3, Gnome Panel 2.16.1. It seems some KDE applications just flash crazily in the windows list (task bar in Gnome panel). Usually when a new event happens to a window, it flashes to remind the user (I hate this *feature* anyway, but can't disable it...) But this time, when I switch from another workspace to the workspace that has (more than one) KDE applications (like kile and kdvi), they just simply start to flash, and the flashing window list appears on every workspace unless you click it.
I tried to disable the animation from gconf-editor, without success. Does anyone have similar issues? It is really annoying..
