I used the command shown below to remove a list of software using yum. It worked, but is there a way of doing this without using the -y option? I would like to review the results before the transaction takes place. I would like to use the same method for installing additional software after a clean install.
cat filename | xargs yum -y remove
I am doing something for a class, and i have to list all the files in the users home directory, and i did a ls -F so the directories have a / after them but i don't know how to remove them because i just want the files not the directories
when I run the command i get

i need the Desktop/ to go away
I'm simply trying to remove old kernels and second rename things that are on the list. It used to take me 10 seconds with grub1, but having some difficultly with grub2. So far I went into /boot/ and removed the old kernels and then did a sudo update-grub2 and it seemed to remove all the old kernels from the list. Is this the best way or doing it or any issues on doing it this way? Second I just want to rename what boots up like Ubuntu 2.6.32-22-generic to something else. I keep read not to modify the grub.cfg, but not sure what to do? I poked around the files in /etc/grub.d/, but not sure what to do?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a fresh Debian install, since this install was on a desktop, I had an internet connection and didn't notice (it was late, I was half asleep) I opted to download a whole load of packages I didn't really need. I thought all was doomed until I remembered that I have done another Debian install but a week ago on a laptop, which has a nice clean install without all the bloat.
So I ran dpkg --get-selections > selections
and had it sent to my new desktop installation.
Now if I run dpkg --set-selections < selections followed by dselect-upgrade nothing happens. I assume this is because the smaller list contains all the packages 'to be installed' which already are, and all the missing packages are not being purged. Do I need to explicitly add all the packages I want to purge to the 'selection' list or is there a better way of doing it?
These should be my last pleas for help with regard to Fedora 13. I've been unable to turn off the notifications that appear in the top right corner, despite a decent amount of searching on google. I can't remove any notifications package without removing a bunch of important software along with it. Also, F13 refuses to "Safely Remove" either of my external disks. I have to yank out the usb cord, touching wood each time.

Among them, some drivers for HP Printers (I don't know why this cropped up; I don't even use printers on my laptop), and gcj updates (I use gcc/g++ but not gcj). I unchecked them the first time I saw them on my UM list. However, for every subsequent batch of new updates, UM retains these updates and I need to uncheck them every time. How can I remove them totally from my UM list?

I want to run some command such as ls on certain types of files in the directory and have the * (glob) expand to all possibilities for the filename.
echo 'file otherfile' | tr ' ' '
' | xargs -I % ls %*.txt
This command does not expand the glob and tries to look for the literal 'file*.txt'
How do I write a similar command that expands the globs? (I want to use xargs so the command can be run in parallel)
I often want to extract some info using awk from a variable/filename while running other things using xargs and sh. Below is an example:

In the above case I would like to grab just the first field from a filename (delimited by '_') from within an sh command. This is a simplified example, where normally I would be doing some further data processing with the sh command(s).
The error message that I get is:

I'm testing some multi-plat java code and I'm getting a bit frustrated with the Linux tests. I need to run the command:

against all the files that match a specific criteria. I've tried various find syntax and I can't seem to get it right.
Normally I would just create a bash script and populate the results of find into an array and then just enumerate the collection but in this specific case I want to demonstrate this operation at the bash terminal.

I want to insert a picture into a group of pictures (I memorized their names in a text file) resulting a new group of picture (which I also memorized their name in another text file), but I have a problem doing that. I want to write something like that:

where
file1 is:
frame1.jpg
frame2.jpg
frame3.jpg

and file2 is:

I will eventually script this but wanted to know where I screwed up when trying to get this oneliner to work. In a nutshell, I want to created a backup directory, find any files that have changed in the last 48hrs and them copy them to the newly made backup directory.

What am I doing wrong here ? Shredding a directory with files is incredibly slow. If I create a file of similar size it is around 1000 times faster. Filesystem is ext4, OS is Slack current. Looking at top it shows shred's status as 'D' which, according to the man page, means uninterruptible sleep ! Also /usr/bin/time shows around 10 minutes but that time was printed on stdout approx. 7 minutes before the command prompt reappeared !

I get this behavior on Slackware 13.37, which includes BASH 4.1.010. Yes, BASH is my shell. I have a file called a.flac and I'm in the directory that contains it.

b. Rename all these directories to <original name>.dir
c. Once the renaming is done - search from top level and retain only those directories which has .txt content in them.

Can i use xargs here to perform operation a and b , or will sed will be useful.
I would like to ask the following:
1) ls -l |grep test -> this will grep every "ls -l" output line
2) ls -1 |xargs grep test -> this will grep every single file with test
3) ls -1 |xargs echo -> this will echo directory list
4) ls -1 |echo -> this does nothing!!!
My question is: how some command can receive input from "both sides" (grep can grep whole output or every single file - xargs, the same is for i.e. wc command). 4) echo does nothing (it's a single echo command).
I have an awk program that finds all files of a specific filename and deletes them from selected subdirectories. There is logic in the awk to avoid certain subdirectories, and this is initialized via a parameter in the beginning statement of the awk. The parameter should have all of the subdirectory names at the top level. This varies from time to time, so I cannot hard-code the value.I'm having a problem initializing the awk parameter using sed. I'm setting a variable (named subdir) using an "ls" command piped to "xargs". I'm then trying to substitute that value into the awk using the sed command.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI know a bunch of commands and I am comfortable using the terminal, I even set a powerpc server but I can't figure out how to remove epiphany on this new computer I'm setting up. I didn't install anything with tasksel. I installed gnome and xorg afterwards... I load it up and 'startx' just fine. then I check around for the programs that were installed. I lik'em gimp, lot's of utilities. gedit. anyway I find epiphany, which I have already established that I dislike, I immediately go to the root terminal (another nice program that comes with gnome) and type apt-get remove epiphany-browser-data the output says it will be deleting gnome... however I have researched and found these are simpy meta packages that don't really matter.... however under the section that states all the packages that will be removed by autoremove there is a huge list... I doubt these packages are safe to remove. how to remove epiphany without removing a huge amount of probably needed software
View 14 Replies View Relatedwhat i did was, remove evolution mail from synaptic, what i wanted to do was just remove the indicator applet from the task bar. i read a bunch of bad stuff about removing evolution from synaptic vs just removing the applet.
im worried. did i break anything or put my security at risk. after, i used a command (older) (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop)to install ubuntu desktop. because i thought that it would fix evolution. then i went to synaptic and installed a package called evolution. i rechecked evolution in applications menu. however, i notice that i have both a checkable evolution and two evolution icons. nothing 'seems' broken. im not sure if it ever was. and evolution calender pops up as normal, as does the the installed plain evolution. they both seems to be an exact copy of the other.
all i really wanted to do was remove the indicator applet. did i make a serious mistake. since ive had ubuntu, ive reformatted a lot because i was worried i made a mistake of some kind. however now im into the more "make a mistake and fix it stage' as im pretty happy with my current desktop and have worked hard to customize it. the command, sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages removed the mail icon. i still am worried that i broke something, or put my security at risk. also, now i have two mail icons. evolution mail and calendar, and another just called evolution.

I've recently spent a lot of time (read weeks) pruning my music collection, basically by hand. and now I'm moving on to my family photos. Most of the work with the music was done under Windows XP. As for the photos, I have a fantastic Windows application, D'Peg, that I had actually purchased some years ago. This app rocks for Windows. In my opinion it's so good that I would happily pay double the asking price. However, I'd prefer to use Linux if possible, so, what's out there, anything that is worth it's salt?
