Fedora :: Sharing An USB HDD Over A Network?
May 2, 2010
I am using Fedora 12 64bit on a laptop. I have a 2TB external USB HDD hooked to the laptop. The laptop is hooked to a Linksys wireless router via a network cable. I want to share that 2TB HDD with a wired WinXP computer, a wireless WinXP laptop, and a wireless Ubuntu laptop. This is my home network. How do I make it happen?

I'm trying to share internet connection with my wifi capable mobile device. For that I'm creating ad-hoc wifi connection in networkmanager with 'shared to other computers' ipv4 option. And there is the problem - the device cannot get the setting via DHCP. The firewall is adjusted properly by NM, dnsmasq is started. I've looked at dnsmasq arguments string and found that the temporary config file which is provided by NM is empty. So, where else should I look for a possible reason or should I just post a NM bug?

I'm going to setup a File and Printer Sharing in my little home network... 3 Computers actively connected to the Web through a single ADSL2+ Wireless Router (number of Computers will increase later) At the moment 2 of the computers are running Fedora 10 and 1 running Windows XP...
Now i want to setup the 3 machines to use 1 printer which is connected to one of the Fedora 10 machines, and i want File Sharing to be enabled so each machine can easily view each others shared files and also be able to print when ever needed (ofcourse the machine with the printer will have to be on for the printing process to happen) I've installed Samaba on each Fedora Machine, enabled sharing but i dont seem to be able to view the Windows machine or each other....

I have a wired lan at home with 2 XP boxes connecting to a router to a DSL modem. I want to network my laptop, running only fedora os, for file sharing, printing and internet access. I will be using the laptop probably exclusively for creating/maintaining a Drupal-based (LAMP) e-commerce site to replace our old one for our small family business.

I just installed suse on this computer, and am wanting to allow other computers to store files on it as a file server. I was reading the online manual and in the personal file preferences, it shows an option to enable 'share public files over network'. The problem is I don't see that option when I open up file preferences. All I see is an option to allow sharing using bluetooth, nothing about sharing over the network. When I look in the network I can see the computer running suse, but when I try to connect to it, it says 'unable to mount drive: connection refused by server.'

I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.

I have two Suse un-firewalled computers connected via NFS. About a year ago I found instructions for a very SIMPLE way to share a CUPS connected printer using Yast. When I installed 11.4 I lost the instructions. It required no config file editing and took about two minutes. Google searches focus on complicated SMB-Linux connections like those suggested by swerdna.

I am using 10.4 desktop and currently got everything setup the way i like it, but when sharing my network folder I can see the folders and everything seems fine then when i click to access the files it gives me an error message of not having permission to the folders. I tried going into the basic permissions tab in folder properties like you normally would with ntfs permission sharing in windows (don't know if thats how things work in Ubuntu but i gave it a try) and nothing would change when trying to change read/write permissions or read only permissions.

I have a dual boot PC with an NTFS partition on it that I want to share across the network. It has my music on it which I am going to keep for a while until I find a suitable iTunes replacement.
I also have a server and have mounted those shared ext3 drives ok using NFS and configuring fstab and exports. Works a treat.
With this one, I am getting a error: "ntfs-3g: Failed to access volume '192.168.xx.xx:/nfs/xpdata': No such file or directory" when I try to mount it on the remote client machine. I can access the local mount fine.

It is probably a very easy question, but I could not find the right answer on the net so far. What I am trying to do is to set up a network of machines running Ubuntu 11.04. On of these machines will have a folder that needs to be shared with all the other machines. Eventually, this folder should be mounted at startup on the machines that are accessing over the network.
So, what I tried to do was: sudo mount 192.168.37.202:/home/user1/dir1 /home/user2/dir2 -o username=user1,password=password1
dir1 is the folder on machine 192.168.37.202 that should be shared. This is the response that I get:
mount.nfs: an incorrect mount option was specified
So, what am I doing wrong? Do I have to install anything special?
As I said before, eventually I want to have an automatic mount, so I guess that I have to edit /etc/fstab. What does this entry should look like?

I'm attempting to set up SGE 6.1 to do load sharing on my network. I am becoming quite confused though with the installation and configuration. I've installed the Master and Exception host on the main server and all services are started. I'm attempting to install a second Exception server now which is causing some of the confusion. Before installing an execution host, you first need to have installed the master server as described in How to Install the Master Host.
Do I do this even on the computers that aren't masters? I'll be setting up Grid on up to 10 computers, does this mean I have to go through the installation process 20 times(1 install of master and execution per computer)? Classic or Berkeley Spooling? By the looks of it Berkeley is the way to go as it is faster than Classic. This will require me to install more software, correct?
If there is a full, non-terribly written guide somewhere I would love to see one. I've been using the ones from Sun but they don't go into detail on most things that could use it.

I have an opensuse machine - 11.4, running KDE as my desktop. My wifes computer is a Windows 7 PC.
I have installed SAMBA and have configured it to load at each boot. I have set the domain name to WORKGROUP as this is domain name my wife has on her pc. I have shared the video folder within Dolphin in KDE. I'm uncertain about the meaning of the netbios setting (despite reading Chapter29.Samba) and whether I should adjust this setting. Basically, I'm able to see my wife's computer name within Linux, though within Windows, I'm unable to see my linux network. Is it due to the settings that I currently have on my linux pc. The documentation that I'm reading so far is confusing for me.

I want to know if you can make a share on Samba and if you access the file you need to put a username and password in and can you save that to the server. If you can give me a step by step guide how to do it or give me a link where I can go read up on it.

I have a problem sharing files between two machines on my network, one, my main one running 10.10 and the other running Lubuntu. I've used the share files option on my main computer, and they show up on the Lubuntu machine, but when I try accessing the files, I get a message telling me that they'failed to mount'. It's frustrating in that I can see that the files are there, and obviously the Lubuntu machine can 'see' them too. I'm sure that I must have missed out something, and I've tried searching, but so far have only come accross some very old tutorials that just confuse me more. Surely there must be a fool proof way of getting this all working? (I've tried Giver, but the Lubuntu machine refuses to run Giver!)

I seem to be having difficulties sharing a CDROM... Here is where I am at: My smb.conf section looks like this
Code:
[cdrom]
comment = Samba server's CD-ROM
read only = yes
locking = no
[code]....
My fstab looks like this, (as directed in smb.conf)
Code:
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
# / was on /dev/sda1 during installation
[code]....
I am trying to read the CDROM with a Windows 7 netbook. My mount folder has the following permissions:
Code:
dr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 2048 2007-10-10 01:00 samba

At the outset I would like to tell everyone that I am still relatively a newbie in linux. I use a usb mobile broadband data card to connect to the internet, and I recently purchased another desktop for my wife. Both of us do not share any files, but I do not have a router and was wondering if I could share my connection with her using a crossover cable.I did a lot of Googling around and tried various different things, I even followed another thread in the same forum but the most that I have got is my network manager saying that connection has been established. I am however not able to see her computer under my windows network and don't know how to proceed.I don't know where I am going wrong, and considering that my knowledge of networking is at below basement level, I would really appreciate any help in this regard.

I have two partitions, both formatted as ext4. One with Ubuntu 10.10 64-bits and the other just for data (formatted as ext4 zero). I wanted to share a folder from this second partition. I followed the instructions on http://tech.mobiletod.com/how-enable...cation-ubuntu/ but there was not any "Windows networks (SMB)" option, only "Unix networks (NFS)".

I want to share files between my desktop box and my laptop either by my mains-LAN or by ethernet cable and cannot find anything on the forum to point me in the right direction. There is plenty of information to help with the installation of Apache/LAMP and the like. But is this what I need? Will I need to create logon IDs to the desktop to share files (and even the printer?).

Trying to set up network sharing between Ubuntu 9.10 and Vista. I already did this with a wired Ubuntu 9.10 desktop and my Vista laptop but for some reason my Ubuntu 9.10 wireless and Vista wireless aren't as easy. They are all on the same workgroup "MAGIC" and I can see my ubuntu shares on the Vista computer but can't see the Vista shares on the ubuntu computer. In ubuntu I go to network>windows network>MAGIC but it times out at the MAGIC workgroup part and says 'unable to mount'.
[URL]
but no luck I also checked and there isn't a firewall that's in the way.
