I need to mount tmpfs partitions to /etc & /var and unpack archieves of this folders there. This task is complete working on Gentoo with monolite kernel & handmade initramfs script. But on fedora this method is like hacking. And not pretty for later upgrades, etc... I think, may be it is need to create script in /etc/init.d/ with high run priority. But this method takes many errors on boot. It is need to mount two tmpfs partitions to /etc/ & /var & unpack archieves. All this processes are to be executet after switching init from initramfs to realinit. But before first system processes try to start. How to complete this task with fedora way?
On our network, we authenticate our users via LDAP and use autofs to mount their home directories. This works fine in Fedora 8. However, in Fedora 10, when the user logs in, it also mounts the home folders of the users that previously logged onto the system as well. This is what I see when I login as "user1" on Fedora 10
I have multiple ubuntu machines and I connect to one through an NFS share. I have done this for a few years without issue. However, since re-installing ubuntu and upgrading to 10.4 I have a problem with my system hanging when the remote shares are lost.
Basically, I can power down the machine downstairs, and my main machine then has a fit. I can not open any folders in ubuntu, nor can I shut down. If I try and shut down the system hangs, last time it hung for 8 hours before I had to kill the power.

I don't know what I've done wrong, or how I can prevent this from hanging. I have googled the heck out of this as well and can't seem to find an answer either.
Upon reboot, sometimes it would mount automatically and sometimes it would not. I have not discovered any specific pattern. It is very random. Sometimes it would go many reboots without mounting and on the next it would mount it. I tried putting timeo paramter, played with the parameters, but still have the same issue. My laptop is connected to a wireless network. When I do mount -a or if I go to Places everything mounts great. It just simply will not mount all the time automatically upon boot, and after wireless connection is established.

This occurs even if I specify an IP address in fstab rather than a host name. I was really surprised by that. The odd thing is that by the time the system is up, not only is DNS working as expected, but the NFS shares are mounted as expected. I'd just ignore it for now, accept that it prevents Apache from starting since some of the server's files live on the NFS shares (this is a development system). It appears that the DNS resolver isn't running when the mounts are attempted and that they are attempted again later, after the resolver is running.

I "upgraded" to Karmic and now my computer won't start. It shows the grub menu, I select the first Ubuntu option, and it shows the white logo. My Debian Lenny server crashed today for some inexplicable reason, and now one of my machines refuses to mount NFS shares on bootup. Manual mounting works fine. It's just one machine; the others are still mounting normally.
ubuntu 9.10. Won't boot. Not a new installation, no new hardware. When I boot it up into 2.5.31-22-generic safemode it says: One or more of the mounts listed in etc/fstab cannot yet be mounted: /home: wating for UUID...
Booted up w/ live CD, fsck says that /dev/sda3 is clean I have a 320 GB hard drive, 20 GB is the linux boot, 2 GB is swap, and the rest is /home. Palimpset Disk Utility can recognize the 20 & swap, but says the rest is unrecognized.
On all of them any attempt to mount an nfs drive fails with:

This happens immediately - within a few tenths of a second at most. It happens whether I use mount -a(mounts are listed in the fstab file) or a full mount command. It happens on both 32-bit and 64-bit installs.
Nothing appears in the messages log file on either the server or the client machine.
It was working in Fedora 12.
Iptables and ip6tables are both disabled. nfsd is running.
Hosts.allow and hosts.deny both exist on the client, but are empty. They contain nothing but comment lines.
I can ping the server and run ssh shells to it. I can open Web pages in Firefox.
I am running Fedora 14 with kernel 2.6.35.74 x86_64 and I am having an issue with a Vfat partition that is shared with Windows 7 on a dual boot setup. this partition contains my mozilla profiles and it occasionally mounts as read only in Fedora. I wont be able to write to it and root doesnt seem to be able to write to it when this happens. I checked this by trying to redirect an output of ifconfig. My fstab entry looks like this.

These two (fstab and ls -l) always look the same whether the partition behaves as read only or not.
I am trying to get NFS mounts working properly using autofs, but I'm only getting partially results. I have an auto.master set up for indirect mounts and a list of map files for each entry. Forgot to mention that when I mount the directory using /etc/fstab or setup a direct mount in /etc/auto.master I can see files in the mounted directory...
I'm building a lab of fedora 14 machines that are supported by an RHEL/CentOS 5.6 server. Everything was working fine yesterday, but today ypbind can't connect to the server and nfs mounts fail with this message:

just about to install Fedora 10 on my MSI WIND laptop and read abit about file system on Linux and come across alot of recommendations on how many logical mounts or partition to create..so far i have created /boot of 100MB.i'm unsure of what sizes i will give to my [root] / and /home and /swap
i am thinking of assigning 1GB to /swap which leaves me with 40GB left for / and /home.i'm going to install alot of softwares and probably try out wine as well.i want a separate /home directory incase i change distro then i'll keep it... where does the programs go to under?
In trying to get rid of GPT I somehow hosed my flash drive - now when plugged in and I run df - I see tempfs /dev/shm - is there anyway I can somehow repartition, reformat my flash drive ?
I just reinstalled my windows partition from a backup image. Following that the Grub2 needed repair. That was accomplished and the grub2 menu along with the changes I made (to the grub screen) come up just fine. I can select my Windows 2K installation and it boots okay.when I select the "Linux 2.6.31-17-generic" the boot process appears to begin normally with the Ubuntu symbol shown, but at some point the screen goes blank and the boot process stalls. recovery mode gives me a jumbled up recovery menu. I have installed Fedora 12 i686 Live to a 200 mb partition on an external drive. Before the install I created a 6.7 GB ext3 partition and a 45 GB ext3 partition. The live cd copied the image to a 200 mb partition.

Will creating an entry in fstab sdb6 and sdb8 allow the fedora distrib dvd to install to the external hd? How do I create the entries? I have a raid0 hd with windows xp pro. When i try to shrink the partition using anaconda, I get a disk error and the comper locks up. I have to shut off the ups to reboot.
I am currently using FC10 on a Dell 4600 with 2GB of ram. I love Linux as it is the most stable OS around. My end goal is to have the machine boot and start the vncserver automatically, eventually using an ssh tunnel to make it secure. My main problem is the vncserver is not starting on boot, I must login as a user then it works great. the error I get is

Basically what happens is the vncserver fails on boot however, if I login to the Fedora box I am able to connect and I get the GDM login screen. I have read many, many posts but have not been able to get over the boot issue. I really want to make this a headless box I can put in another room so I have more room for my musical gear.
I am trying to get mysql to start at boot without any success.
The mysqld scripts works fine when run from the command line, but it does not work when i use the links created by chkconfig. I checked the boot.log and found that mysql starts but then it stops or gets shutdown. This is the log message:

I've sucessfully installed Fedora 11 into a SunVirtualBox machine, but I would like to elimate from the boot sequence the GUI Startup. If I need it I could invoke the GUI from the command line. How I coud get this?
I'm completely stumped by a problem with httpd in Fedora 13. It fails to start on boot: I can see: Starting htpd: FAILED, in /var/log/boot.log, but I can't find anything else in messages, audit.log or anywhere else that gives me any clue why. The weird thing is that running: run_init service httpd start after boot _works_ and the server runs fine, but even when it's running OK, service httpd status reports httpd dead but subsys locked
I'm guessing that the problem somehow relates to selinux, but I can't find anything in the audit logs that gives me a clue. How to turn on more logging so that I can get closer to the problem. I finally discovered the cause. This system was originally configured to use network services directly, without NetworkManager. It had been upgraded a number of times since installation. It seems that over time, if you have turned off NetworkManager, the defaults have changed. Used to be that the network services was 'enabled' by default (hence started at run time). Now, the default is 'disabled'. Httpd couldn't start because there was no network to start on. Enabling network services at boot time fixed this. I guess I should have noticed this. But one might think that httpd failing to start because of the lack of a network might at least give a warning message in the logs about the reason.
Just upgraded to F15 and I cannot seem to get the sendmail service starting at boot time.It starts and works just fine by hand after boot, so there's nothing wrong with the sendmail configuration itself."runlevel" shows a current run level of 5 and "chkconfig" shows sendmail on for run level 5.All the other mail service (mailman, clamd, etc.) start fine.Doing "service sendmail start" after boot gets everything up and running just fine, but itsure would be nice to have it run at boot like it used to

Continued at * so order may be followed.Fairly new to Fedora, I had reset my Monitor setting from the Graphical Interface on the Desktop, (got an out of range error) Was able to SSH in and reset Xorg to correct values, however now the server does not boot to the Graphical Desktop, just has a spinning blue circle on black background. The server has booted and I can get in with SSH, all functions of the server appear to be working correctly, i.e.web, mail, ftp, etc. However it never goes to the Graphical login page as before.*Fedora 8..the perfect server + ISPconfig. I am running fedora 12 x386 and using it as an Amahi server. Very cool, but it would be extra cool if I had a virtual windows machine startup when I booted up this server. Then I could just rdp into it when I needed something in windows.
I have the Samba server & users configured, I can access between Linux/Windows shares and both SMB & NMB services are set to be enabled at boot.Everything working.But when I restart the computer, I notice in services configuration that "This service is dead." for NMB. Therefore I have to enable it manually upon boot so that it works.I'm using Fedora 10, fresh installed and updated. I've noticed through search that others have had this issue as well throughout other versions of Fedora, yet I have not found a conclusive solution to this.
I want to set up a web server on a PIII machine with about 800MHz processor and just under 500 megs of RAM. So how would I go about configuring Fedora 12 to do this? I've tried the small spins and I just don't know how to configure it so it will install properly. I was able to get the Gnome spin on it but when it booted I couldn't get through the log-on screen. I have an AGP NVIDIA Geoforce 6200 video card. I'm wondering it that's it. The only Linux distros I could get on the machine was Puppy and Debian. Puppy did not edit the boot record very well. Debian went on there with very minor issues, but edited the master boot record very well so that I can dual boot to WindowsXp HE. I also tried to put Centos on there but the Live CD is not installable. I have to make an installation CD from the DVD Package. Anyways, as far as Fedora is concerned, I just want a utility, light weight spin that has web-server, mail server, and eventually MySQL. Other wise I'll have to commit treason and use the horned Debian as my savior in this battle.
