I am currently running Ubuntu 11.04 on my Inspiron 910 Netbook and I want to switch to Fedora because I am not a fan of Unity. So I downloaded the Fedora ISO from the site and booted on the Netbook to see if everything worked. My problem is when I launched the Evolution set-up the window was too big for the screen and I could not resize it. Is there a way I can fix the windows so they fit on the screen
View 1 RepliesI have a 4-5 year old dell inspiron 600m that i have been running on linux ubuntu for the past 2-3 years. Last week i took it apart to paint the casing, got that done and since I put it back together it has a tendency to become very hot. When i got it back together i also installed a good number of updates.
Also, I can no longer stream videos/ music from the internet. I am not sure if i messed something up when i was putting it back together, or if something in these updates has caused a problem. I have always been able to stream on previous installs, and i cannot honestly remember if i could before i took it apart. i am trying to watch a video on ..... and the cpu usage went clear to 100% and the cpu temperature went up to 99 Deg Celcius. The audio and video didnt even match but for a second or two at the very beginning. When the computer is sitting idle browsing the internet the cpu usage is very low, maybe avg. 15% and the temp drops to 55deg C fairly quickly.
I have a old Dell Inspiron Laptop I would like to use, but it dosent have awhole lot of memory 160megs worth and tried running the live cd of Ubuntu and Lubuntu and all i get on the screen is a blinking cursor. It give me the option to boot off the cd but that is where it stops.

It did partiion E drive futher to install it. Had the GRUB RESCUE prompt initially. But after running the following got into the next problem.

I am running Natty on a Dell Inspiron 6000 under dual boot. Now Ubuntu refuses to load. GRUB goes along to a point where the final message in both regular and recovery modes is 81.8921591 atal: SRST failed (errno=-16). Is there any way I can recover short of having a professional rescue my data from the hard disk and totally redoing the install. I have had this problem in previous versions but never fatally before. My computer works fine under Windows.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIn the last week or 2 I've noticed something odd with the audio - but as I don't use the it very much and also accept all the ongoing updates from Fedora. Anyway symptoms are (using ALSA):
1. Volume control button on the laptop - when decreasing to less than ~50% the sound goes to zero.
2. Watching flash movies (in Firefox 3.5.1, Adobe 10 plug-in) (e.g. BBC, .....): they play fine for a few seconds then go choppy (audio and video) then video recovers but sound is lost (and the laptop volume control does not work at all after that).
3. Finding similar problems on replay of audio with kplayer and vlc on music files (ogg) that previously worked fine.
I've seen the pulseaudio and vlc fix thread but I don't use pulseaudio in kplayer, for example.

I am using Ubuntu right now. But I wanted to install Fedora 12 on my Dell inspiron 1545 laptop. My questions are can I use a live cd if available for fedora 12 and then install it on my laptop like we can do for ubuntu. Are all the drivers available automatically installed during installation.
The problem I faced my last installation with fedora 11 was that I could not get the wireless installed and I was unsuccessful in installing the wireless drivers using ndis wrapper or b43-legacy or something.
Can you give me a detailed link which could allow me to install the wireless drivers and also the video drivers for my laptop. The problem I am facing with my ubuntu 10.04 is that it is slow, the flash plugin is worst i guess, some of the flash videos are very slow.
Taking all of these into account can someone suggest me a good operating system. I am pretty much interested in learning linux rather than just using it like a windows operating system. I am considering, fedora 12, suse 11.2, linuxmint, centos, mandriva. Which one could be a best possible for my installation.
As I am not willing to purchase a dvd for these linux flavors can I use my flashdrive to install.
I installed REL 5.5 on this Dell laptop (originally win 7) and everything works ok except when i get to the login GUI the LCD brightness (or lack of) sets to it's lowest so i have to click the f5 button to brighten the screen. If I log out, the LCD resets to the dimmest setting (can hardly make out the login GUI) and again I have to click on f5. I believe I need to update the BIOS but I don't know how. The BIOS update I dound on-line if a xxx.exe file.

I searched on the web with "can I install 8GB memory on dell inspiron 530", and got couple of articles that says I only needed a bios upgrade.I downloaded bios version 1.0.18 from dell and run that in Windows to replace bios 1.0.12.After it said upgrade successful and asked me whether I wanted to reboot to have the new bios taking effect, and I said yes. And it shutdown the computer, and never came up Now, when power up, I see nothing, not even the "F2 to setup, F12 to boot menu" message, much less the grub selection. I have an issue relating my broadband connection, which I am not able to solve. I hope and wish, that I would find some way out here.
Some introduction: I am using Dell Inspiron (i3 processor) laptop, which I recently bought. I have win 7 preinstalled in it. In win 7, the wired broadban connection (Airtel connection) is working fine and have no issues.
I have been using mobile GPRS(BSNL, Ltd) through bluetooth, and that have been working fine. But today when I tried to connect through landline connection, it didn't workout. But the bluetooth connection is still fine. When I tried to do the connection manually through Network Manager, it is not taking the MAC Address. Till now, after installation, I have not updated my OS.

I am able to boot Fedora 14 to the GUI, log in on the keyboard, see the desktop, and then I get no response from the laptop's keyboard or trackpad.
I do not know how to obtain hardware specifics on my keyboard or touchpad, so perhaps that would be good info for me to start with...
BTW my ultimate goal is to run an Amahi server on the laptop. 2600 has a pentium III 1.13GHz processor and 512Mb RAM
I have installed F11 on my Dell Inspiron 1501. I tried to get the Broadcom 4311 wireless card to work by following the instructions for installing the Broadcom driver from this link: [url].

Note that wireless does seem to be working (though without encryption) despite the error messages. And I got these same error messages with the Broadcom driver but I could not get wireless working.

If I run one session of emacs everything works fine.
Once I start a second session and try to resize or move the emacs window, the system stops responding.
