I am in need of recommendations what software to use to keep track of development files in my office. I wish to have a central server which holds the source code of our software. There will be two dev staff working concurrently on the same files. Also i need it to be accessible by Eclipse or any equivalent IDE software.

However, I would like to have a browser based interface for managing things, such as installing a phpBB forum and stuff like that. Also, I want my friends to be able to share files on my home server as well. I know I can do it by using FTP, but I would rather not have them to install a FTP program.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to set up a very simple version control system in my own computer, which only I will use. I want to use it mainly for latex files, not programming. I basically want to use it as a smart backup system and to keep track of past versions, but I don't need merging, patching, etc... My typical needs are the following:Work on a file many times and committ the changes every couple of days.Every now and then, try something new, and do it on a new branch. If it doesn't work, go back to the original one.
Take a look at a previous version (often a binary file, say a pdf or dvi file).I have used git so far, for no special reason, but I haven't been able to get comfortable with it, specially since it only handles text files efficiently (I think). My main issue is with point 3 above, I haven't found a way (maybe there's just no way) of pointing to a previous version of a file and opening it in an external program. Would CVS or SVN or any other version control system allow me to do this easily?
Where is the version control repository for source RPMs? When a package maintainer makes a change, he or she must commit the change somewhere. Where is that, and is it publicly viewable?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI think a version control system should be integrated by default into the user's documents directory. Any time a file is saved, the app would check to see if there is another file by the same name, and if there is, make a hidden copy of the previous version with name such as ".filename.[datestamp]" . This would be similar to what gEdit already does, but at a broader level.
A more robust system would include controls for watching more directories. It would also show comparisons with previous versions of the document. Being file based, it wouldn't care if unneeded backup files are destroyed.
If file space is an issue, backup files would only contain the differences between the next and previous versions. This would mean, however, that back-up files would be useless if a few are irretrievable.
Obviously, users would be able to turn this app on or off, if they don't need/desire this feature.
I want to setup a git repository, three of four users will contribute, so they need to download the code and shall be able to upload their changes to the server or update their branch with the latest modifications.So, i setup a linux machine, install git, setup the repository, then add the users in order to enable the acces throught ssh.Now my question is, What's next?, the git documentation is a little bit confusing,i.e. when i try from a dummy user account to clone the repository i got:

I want to store some of my configuration files (~/.emacs.d/, .Xdefaults, etc. linux $HOME stuff) in version control so I can easily sync them with my notebook/workplace and see my past changes and revert to them should the need arise.
So far it seems to me that there are quite some people using git for this and I think that I too want to use a distributed vcs for this (if only to get more used to them) but I can't say that I am very experienced with all things dvcs. I did use darcs and git briefly and so far I can say that I really like the way git handles branches, and I think the possibility to have different branches within the same directory is especially useful for my use case. Darcs on the other hand has cherry picking of patches, which too is quite the convenient feature when managing configuration files (at least I assume it is).
So, what would you recommend to use? And what would be your reasoning for your recommendation? What other vcs with nice feature that I haven't mentioned exist and would make a good vcs to store configuration files and why?
I have this project at work. We are a MS Windows shop, and I am "supposed" to be the linux expert, which means, linux support, it's me. I have worked with linux maintaining PCs at home with different versions of linux since 1995, jumping from Slackware to Ubuntu.
Now, I have two CentOS 5.6 boxes, and I need to control the patching process. the boxes are hosting an application which we don't manage. So. one box in production, one box in development. The idea is that the box in development wil use yum in a standard way and download whatever patches are needed, and the application is tested. When the testing is done (this can take minutes, hours, or days) then the production box gets patched.
The problem is that I need to garantee that exactly the same patches are applied in development and in production.
the development box downloads the patches from the internet, but the production box gets it's patches from the development box, not the internet. I have played around with making local repos on the development box and samba, or rsync the /var/yum/cache, and to change the yum.repo.d CentOS-base.repo to force the prod to go to the dev box, without success.
I'm looking for an open source web based version control system for our enterprise.To give you a quick picture of what we need I'll give you an example.
1.The customer send us some files for a new project (these will be the version 1.0)
2.We work on these files and make then available to the customer to let him verify that our changes are what he want. (These will be the version 2.0)
3.The customer accept.
4.We start the production.
I have a new folder in my directory, called 'newfolder'
When I create a diff file there is no mention of this new folder in it.
When I do 'svn add newfolder' it says: svn: warning: 'newfolder' is already under version control.
How do I get my newfolder to be included in my diff file so that it is included when someone else patches my file in their own directory
I feel little silly asking this, I accidently removed from my gnome panel my internet connection, volume control and battery indicator on F11. how can I add this back. It does not show up in the add to panel menu and the applications do not give you back the default feel.

I have a Dell PowerEdge 840 that has no sound card. I would like to install a completely compatible sound card. I have not been able to find any recommendations for compatible sound cards on these forums, but I have learned that the C-Media chipset is supposed to be well-supported by Linux. There are C-Media sound cards on e-bay for under $10. I was considering a 6ch c-media 5.1 surround sound 3D PCI sound card. I believe the chipset is CM8738. Does anyone know whether this card is supported in F12? Or does anyone care to share any recommendations for sound cards that are known to be compatible with Fedora 12?
My intention is to be able to install a decent, inexpensive, commodity sound card that is known to be compatible with Fedora 12. I would prefer to purchase and install one that I know works rather than guessing and then fiddling with it forever and asking a lot of questions that could have been avoided.
Surprisingly, this information has been very hard for me to find. I understand that there is no Fedora hardware compatibility list, but it seems that a very brief list of hardware that is know to be compatible with the most recent release or two of Fedora could save a lot of time and resources. The purpose of such a brief list wouldn't necessarily be to see if a certain piece of hardware is compatible, but to find a component that is know to be compatible, so as to easily be able to get a completely functional system up and running.
I'm a freelance science editor; I edit dissertations and manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals primarily. My clients almost exclusively use Microsoft Word. Any word processing tool that I use has to be compatible with MS Word, particularly "Track Changes" version control. Has OpenOffice (or another open source word processing software) achieved this?

In case you are interested, the code is COMSOL Multiphysics 4.0a, running on Fedora 13 x86_64. Note that the FEA code only has the option of saving movies as animated GIF files in Linux.
These GIF files tend to be quite large, and although they are adequate for my own use on my local computer system, I wish to convert these files into other standard formats of more manageable size. These smaller files would then be easier to distribute to others or to include in presentations and reports.
I would like to ask for recommendations for either GUI-based video player/conversion applications or command line codes that could, for example, convert from animated GIF files to MPEG files. I would prefer an application that allows for multiple input/output format choices as well as conversion options for changing the playback speed, splicing out a portion of the original animation, etc.
I have a fedora 11 with kernel package: kernel-PAE-2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.i686
I would like to install the devel package for this kernel version, but I can't find it, because in the fedora repo there is only the original kernel (2.6.29.4....) and in the updates repo there is only the newest kernel package (2.6.30....)
Where can I find the packages which are between the fedora and update repos' versions?
Volume up, volume down and mute keys on the keyboard don't control the volume any longer.They worked before. Hitting the keys brings up a progress bar widget with the volume level unchangeable, set at 0% (which is not accurate at all).It looks like the key mappings or key bindings are working, but there is a disconnect with actual functionality. The volume cannot be changed or muted anymore from the keyboard.
This worked just fine in KDE on Fedora 11 before upgrading KDE components yesterday with Yumex. I am now using KDE 4.3.2 I don't think that it's a coincidence that it stopped working after doing an update.
I updated the kernel and nVidia drivers too, but this problem exists when I went back and tested with the previous kernel, so I don't suspect the kernel upgrade. No info in Xorg.conf about the keyboard. Is there a setting that I am missing?
Sound works just fine. I can listen to whatever source I like. This is not a problem with the sound drivers as far as I can tell.I just want to be able to control the volume with the keys on my Logitech Illuminated Keyboard, model Y-UY95. Is anyone else experiencing this?I can adjust the volume with Kmix 3.5 or GNOME Volume Control V2.1

I open the Network Device Control to activate it but there is no network ports in Network Device Control. It is empty.It looks like the system recognize the card and loaded correct driver.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI don't know how this happened, but my keyboard copy and paste functions have stopped working. Oddly enough, I discovered that I can only copy and paste by using the third mouse button. Pressing down on the scroll wheel after highlighting text copies the text, pressing it again pastes it Ican still use the Edit-copy and Edit-paste menu functions.
I'm sure it has something to do with all the tinkering I have been doing with my desktop. I have been experimenting with CompizConfig and Cairo dock, changing my themes and things of this nature.

But I have no tools to control the fan speed from 'acpi'. in particular '/proc/acpi/fan' is an empty directory.
There are no fan info/controls in BIOS either.
I believe the fans do not work as fast as they should and I am trying to find a way to fix this before the cpu cores are melted down from overheating.

Laptop is Dell Latitude C600/C500 with Pentium III 850Mhz, 256Kb L2 Cache, 256MB RAM, ATI M3 video card, HD 20005 MB and sound card is EES Maestro 3i. After trying to do something with Windows 2000 which was installed on the machine, I decided to put Linux without keeping windows on the machine. First I try with Xubuntu (latest version) which was working but slowly, then I found that Debian could work fine on that machine. I have installed latest version 5.08 and was surprised how goodly old machine can work. I solved problems with screen resolution (change from 800x600 to 1024x768) but I couldn't find solution how to fix problem with sound.
Actually I don't have sound on the machine. I looked for a linux driver for that sound card and Dell is only providing windows drivers. Then I found that I can solve the problem with ALSA drivers but I couldn't find the easy way (or any way at all) to install drivers and to get back the sound. When I click on 'Volume Control' (top right corner of the screen) I get the message: 'Volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.'
I'm thinking of making a surveilance camera for my home, but I'm unsure what camera to buy. HD quality image would be great. Recommendations?

Works on a Slackware 11 box with a 2.6.15.1 kernel, but I can't get the driver to compile on newer kernels, and I don't want to spend days trying to find patches that may or may not work.
I'd like to get a cam that I can use without too much difficulty on a Slackware64 13.1 box with a >2.6.36 kernel.
