I have a dell inspiron 2200 that has a pentium dual core and have been running Fedora 13 flawlessly I just noticed recently that my battery wasn't charging. It says battery fully charged at 0.0? And some days can't really recall it charges is there a way to fix this? I am running 2.6.34.7-56.fc13.i686

getting back to our laptop, the stability window is ~3.2V. Meaning that when you operate the battery above this the electrolyte is oxidized on the positive electrode and reduced on the negative electrode. Remember that we only want to oxidize and reduce the active materials and don't want to do anything else. All these reactions other than the ones we want are called side reactions and these are really bad for the battery. The nominal voltage of a laptop battery is 3.7 V which means that something bad wants to happen as we use the battery.So long story short, stuff (e.g., passive layers and poor kinetics of reactions) happens and things are not as bad as they seem and you can increase the voltage up to 4.2V without bad things really happening. All chargers for Li-ion cells today cut the battery off when it reaches 4.2V. What you have to realize is that at 4.2V, these side reactions are present in finite amounts and start to chemically kill the battery, but its not that dramatic.
Operating to 4.1V makes things better and extends the life, 4.0 V is even better and so on. So why don't battery manufacturers cut the voltage off at, say, 4 V to get better battery life? Because every time you cut this voltage down you decrease the capacity of the battery and its run time. The 4.2V cutoff is a compromise between good run time and decent (read "not pathetic) life.On the other hand, if you charge the battery and then pull the plug (so to speak), the battery discharges some, the voltage drops, and these reactions become less of a problem and your battery life goes up. So the best things you can do is to charge the laptop (or cell phone, camera etc.) and once its charged, pull the plug. Your battery will thank you for it.As a matter of fact, if you own a Lenovo Thinkpad, you can actually change the state of charge to which you charge the battery using the Battery Maintenance utility. You can change this from charging to 100% state (where the voltage is 4.2V) to 90% so that your voltage is less. You lose some energy is doing that, but atleast you can change it to 100% when you need battery power and put it back down to 90% when you can plug in. I wish my Mac has the same feature.
I typically use the battery for a while (say 1/2 hour to 1 hour), then plug it in and wait to fully charge it, then I pull the plug and use it again for 1/2 hour to 1h and then I repeat this. Takes some getting used to and I forget to do this, but I try.
I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise and noticed something new. The system icon for battery life is showing "plugged in, not charging." Does this oddity occur in Fedora too?

The first symptom is with de Gnome Power Manager, only show me when I disconnect de AC power, but when connect it again the Power Manager icon disappear and the energy battery stay in the same value.
After search for a while, all the post I read talking about the /proc/acpi/battery directory, but this directory not exist on my laptop.
I have a laptop Lenovo G460. My OS is Squeeze. My Kernel is 2.6.38-bpo.2-amd64, because the 2.6.32 version of the kernel don't recognize well my audio card.
I can't attach the dmesg and the lsmod output because I receive a message "Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached.", both file are compressed.
My monitor recently stopped working(H/W problem)..after getting it repaired,the ubuntu system is acting weird in the sense that after running for some time,it sort of freezes and does not allow to open any new applications.On trying to open new application,the mouse curosr goes to busy mode and a new tab on task bar is displayed showing(starting 'App'),but after some 10-15 sec,the bar is gone,mouse cursor back to its idle mode and the application is never opened.REstarting the system takes it back to proper state,but after sometime-same prob..I cant open any application,not even system monitor to see whether cpu is being utilized to max.
Also,i have noticed one more thing on starting the system,i transferred 1 file(CUT FILE) from linux partition to windows partition and it got transferred successfully.After sometime,when the above prob came,i rebooted the system to see that the file is again present in Linux partition(And also windows parttion).THis is even after cutting the file and not copying.
I've recently removed some packages and now have a problem with fonts. how to get list of removed packages (for example, last 10)?
P.S. I'am using yum-remove-with-leaves plugin.
I did recently install aria2 and everything installed smoothly. but i am not able to locate it. I know it will be in the applications->internet but its not there.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've recently re-installed my operating system after a system problem. I am running F14 and Rhythmbox 0.13.2. I had all my music files backed up and have copied all the all the backed up files to /home/Music. I also ripped four CDs today and put them in the same folder. Then I started Rhythmbox and went to import the /Music folder for the first time since the new install.
The only folders imported from the Music folder were the files from the four CDs I ripped today. It would not import any of the other subfolders or files. The new files were ogg format and that is what most of the non-imported files were. I tried importing the Music folder with Amorok and it worked fine so there files seem to be OK. Any idea why it isn't working in Rhythmbox?
Old windows user finally real tired of them.. Kudos to Fedora 13 as the only popular Linux OS available for us frugal folk that embraced proprietary hardware on my old pukey hp pavilion laptop dv4000 wi fi card.Sad to report massive issues after allowing some 330+ updates to possibly infect this great OS. I'm currently running this 'Live" so I'm staying brief. My strategy will be to not allow any updating until I'm sure they are trusted and or needed, as this is the chosen OS, and I pledge to be moe involved as I try to figure out where or why this initial install went way south
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a wireless headset that I'm trying to charge through USB. When I connect it, it just doesn't charge. Looking at dmesg, the device isn't recognised, which is not surprising, since I think the USB port is only for charging, and it won't communicate over USB. lsusb also tells me that (apart from other things that are connected to the USB bus, that all of the 'MaxPower' variables are set to 0mA. So what I think is happening is I connect the headset ubuntu queries it, receives no reply, and so doesn't let the port draw any current. As far as I'm aware, there usually is some kind of OS handshaking like this, but it may vary from model of computer to model, so there's no point in saying "my <INSERT USB DEVICE HERE> charges". I am able to charge my MP3 player from the same port (because it's recognised), and I can charge the headset if I use a dumb mains->USB/5V transformer, but it should also work with my laptop. What I think I need is some way of manually setting the 'MaxPower' on the USB ports.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI didn't know that charging via usb for my sony ericsson mobile, w880i actually needs the SE PC Suite to be installed, cos, I used to charge it via usb cable, as mentioned, on my workstation, which is window based, it's kinda insignificant to me that the software has to be installed first.
However, I'm currently on the move, with my newly installed "netbook", I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my twinhead efio 121A (which is good, no compatibility issue) and now, I just figured that, SE PC Suite does not have any linux version, but my mobile is already out of battery, and I desperately need to charge it,
I did run a lsusb, it doesn't seem to detect the phone, neither as usb storage, or as a phone, cos, I saw other people lsusb output, it's an item with "sony ericsson", but my output does not have such item. However, when I plug in the usb cable, it did prompt to ask me to choose between "file transfer" or "phone mode".
Just installed 9.10 followed by a 10.04 upgrade (wouldn't work as a 10.04 clean install). The install and upgrade all seemed to go well.
But now when booting I get a message saying "checking battery state" and then it boots no further. This is a laptop without a battery installed, running permanently from the mains through the charger.
How can I disable this check so that the laptop will still boot without a battery fitted?
I recently "saw the light" and realized that ubuntu was becoming a buggy overly-social joke of a distro, and i found that fedora seemed to fix most of my issues with making my laptop run well.Samba was not one of them.Anyway, I installed samba, check. (I also installed the graphical utility). I checked off samba and the client in the firewall. check. I used the utility (system-config-samba?) to switch the workgroup over. check.it did not want to access my fileserver at first; it saw it but as soon as i tried to mount and open it, it timedout and gave me the "unable to mount location" "Failed to retrieve share list from server" error. the next day it worked perfectly. now it is back to not working. it also is not working on my main rig (but it has a faulty hard disk so it will be out for a while).

apps --> gnome-power-manager --> notify
uncheck the low_capacity checkbox. This should disable the popup for you if your battery has little life left in it. Now, if any knows how to disable the Avahi popup, let me know.

I am using Fedora 12. Prior to this I was using Ubuntu 9.10. In Fedora 12, I am facing a problem with battery power. Sometimes when it is fully charged I remove the power cord, battery power comes down to 40%-41%. It never happened with Ubuntu, which gave quite a good battery performance. My question is when it is showing Laptop Battery 100% i.e. fully charged, if I remove the cord why it comes down to 40%-41% (and always in this range).

I had to upgradde to kernel version 2.6.39.1 to get my wireless from disconnecting -- aparentlyey it is a bug in kernels 2.6.38.x .Now my problem, and it was also a problem with kernel 2.6.38.x, is that my battery life on my netbook (gateway LT2320, atom n450 @1.6, gma 3150, 1gb ram, 1024x600) is cut by half. I used to get 7-8 hours of battery life, with Crunchbang, Ubuntu, etc., but now i get 4.5 hours.I have read that this is a problem with the current kernels available after 2.6.37.x.
My question is have they found a fix? Are we going to have to wait for 2.6.31? How much longer until that kernel is in the fedora repositories?
Broadcom 4312, dell inspiron 1545.Earlier i was running on battery power and the laptop shut down when the battery got low. When i got back to it and restarted there was no wireless network. It's grayed out and says wireless disabled. How do i fix this?

I have gnome-screensaver on fedora 10 on an intel mac (laptop) under power, screensaver works fine. On battery, the screensaver never activates, it will eventually go to sleep though. I'm kind of new to fedora.

The OS is not displaying the battery status correctly in the notification area. if I remove the power cord after 100 % charging, the status remains the same even during discharging. It never informs me the correct discharge status or any warning when the battery power is critically low. This is causing unexpected shut downs and data loss to me. Is this a bug ? Do we have a solution for this. My laptop is Compaq CQ40-327TU; dual boot with Vista as alternate OS.
